I love both cities in completely different ways. I lived in New Orleans and attended Tulane University - also my entire family lives there as well. I visit New York about once a month for work and to see my friends who live there.
Basically, I love to visit New York but I love living in NOLA. There is just no other place like it in the US - so much culture and as cheesy as this sounds, New Orleans is magical.
Strange as it is, most of my friends who attended Tulane with me were from New England or Cali and all want to move back to NOLA from New York, some of their homes since birth.
Both cities have so much to offer though that there is no comparison, they are completely different in every social, political, geographical . . . could go on and on . . . way! |

I don't know NY so I can't compare.
However, jerks like Zenkai (who can't even spell New Orleans) don't know what they are talking about and are real AHs for being glad death and destruction was visited on someone.
I also very much doubt he actually lived in New Orleans - maybe in one of the suburbs but not in the city. |

I like both! You really can't compare the two cities though..they both have many attributes and differ in many ways. I don't understand why people are answering if they have not been to both cities. Anyhoo, I personally live only 45 minutes from Manhattan and recently came back from vacation in New Orleans..I am planning to go back next September. |

I have never been to New York, but I love New Orleans. And EllyKay, I don't think you should even answer this question, being you don't even know what a coonass or a cajun is. For your information a coonass as Kristin explained is someone from south or central louisiana. You didn't deserve the 2 points you got for answering the question. How rude! |

new york and new orleans are both filthy, but what big city isn't. I like N.O. better because you can actually afford to live there in a house with a yard for cheaper than a small apartment in new york. The women are also better looking than in new york. |

I've spent the same amount of time in both places. If you want to have a good job, with a bunch of things to do in a relatively clean city, then NY for sure. It also has a lot of history and is progressive by nature. If you want to be somewhere time stands still within it's history, then NO.
There are no old ones. As far as NY goes, I think it has something to do with it being on the New England coast. Since the pilgrims came over from (old) England. |

New Orleans
I turned down acceptance to Duke Law school so that I could attend Tulane Law just so I could live in New Orleans. There is just nothing like it.
Yes, there are few cities as much of a dump or as truly magical as N.O. Where else can a spontaneous parade or second line break out on a Wednesday afternoon? Where else can you be coming home from buying Popeye's chicken, after having received the WORST customer service in the world, turn the corner and run into a jazz funeral of a famous jazz pioneer in which you are more than welcome to join? Where else in the world is the do district judges host free to the public, open bar, free buffet christmas parties with a slammin' d.j. AT THE COURTHOUSE on a weekday? And where else is voodoo so fully entrenched in the culture for all citizens, black and white, that a new transplant can find themselves unwittingly picking up on some of the superstition without realizing it (like how I can never put my purse on the ground any longer for fear of "losing money"- and I KNOW better)?
This place is crazy and I love it. Plus the men are gentile and gorgeous! |

I have no basis for comparison since I have never been to New York. However, I grew up right outside New Orleans (Chalmette) all my life and happen to have loved living there. I moved to Baton Rouge, but I still love going down to New Orleans. Louisiana will always be the place for me. |
