Napa Valley has a pretty low crime rate. Stick to Napa though because housing prices just skyrocket the farther upvalley you go. Stay away from Richmond, Oakland, the Tenderloin, and Vallejo unless you want to be mugged or shot. American Canyon is up and coming and cheaper than Napa but they have a higher crime rate than Napa.

Northern California is a big, big area.

Whoever said Bakersfield was pulling your leg. Not only is it NOT in northern California, the weather there REALLY sucks. I used to live there, and in Caliente, which is in the mountains just east of there.

What kind of place do you like? Berkley and Frisco are cities. .. the Mt. Shasta area is pretty and affordable but has much smaller towns.

I've lived in Siskiyou, Trinity, and Del Norte counties. I currently live in Humboldt County. I love it here, but I've loved everywhere I've lived in Northern California where I wasn't in a big city. It just depends on what you like; city or country living, and if it's country living, then what do you like? Lake, river, mountain, ocean? It's all here. Heck, we have 7 National Forests!

No clue why anyone would suggest San Diego for north California; someone needs to check his Atlas.

Anyway, don't listen to them or me, for that matter. Go on the web and look up any number of sites that give the demographics of just about all the towns and cities everywhere...including the real northern California. [See source.]

Northern California is such a big area to the Oregon Border.

Small Town ? Big Town? Employment? Cost of Housing?

I choose a small town (Sonora) East of the Bay Area 2.5 hours and the region is the Gold Country or the Mother Lode.

Quaint and somewhat affordable compared to the Bay Area

Does it have to be Nor Cal? If not, try the central coast!! It's my all time favorite and right now I'm living in Nor Cal... Pismo Beach or Paso Robles is where I would live if I could!

It really depends what you are interested in. Don't live on the edge of the ocean (houses dropping off) if you plan to stay a long time. Don't live in flood zones. Can't escape earthquake zones but stay out of remote areas because they are the last places that get their utilities restored.

Berkeley, the Peninsula, Marin County, Sonoma County are nice places.

If money is no object... pretty much anywhere in Marin County (just north of the Golden Gate Bridge) is likely to be beautiful, peaceful, and incredibly safe.

Other nice suburban communites around S.F. to look at include: Redwood City, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette, Walnut Creek, Danville, Dublin, and Pleasanton.

Now, if you didn't enjoy suburban life in CT...

Downtown San Francisco is interesting because it defies any real explanation other than the obvious maxim: "you get what you pay for."

Although crime rates are statistically high, it doesn't really tell you anything about the actual situation. For example, a penthouse on the 50th floor of a highrise is as safe as Fort Knox, since there are always guards/doormen in the lobby. While a nearby SRO "hotel" with drug dealers and prostitutes might get raided by police several times in one night.

I certainly would consider a move into the city center itself, if you feel you want a change and can afford it. It is far more intense and fascinating, socially speaking.
