Drive or fly? advice please!!!?

I live in Los Angeles and for summer I want to visit friends in San Francisco/San Jose area. It's my first time going up north, so I need some help! Do you think I should fly up to northern California or drive? With your choice, could you please name pros and cons! Thanks!
Additional Details
Thank you for everyone who has just answered my question! I got a lot of good advice so far...but I was also wondering...what do you think of the public transportation in northern California. Since I live in Los Angeles, I rely on a car, but if I fly to SF, will public transportation be good enough to rely on? Thanks agin!

Well, in my case I hate flying, so I say drive. However with gas prices and everything, it may be easier to fly. This way you don't get lost on your way since it's your first time and you don't have to waste money on gas. However, driving can let you see beautiful sights and allows you to not have to have a time limit. But if you don't have a problem with flying, then I'd say you should just fly for the first time. It'd be easier and you wouldn't get lost. I hope I helped!

Definitely drive!! If you have time, you should drive north of San Fran on Hwy 1 - absolutely gorgeous!!! One of the most scenic drives I have taken. The Redwood trees in Northern California are HUGE!!!

If you can find people to carpool with, I say drive and split the cost of gas.

I did it before and it worked out perfectly on the way there and back.

Best of luck!

By the way, I'm thinking of visiting friends in San Jose later this summer - maybe we could carpool. Email me at my yahoo answers account and let me know what dates you're planning on going.

I would say take a plane. In my oppinion its just easier
Pros: saving money on the high gas prices; its much quicker
Cons: you would need to get some kind of ride once you are there; dealing with airport security is never fun

fly...you'll get there a lot faster, plus with the price of gas right now, it will probably cost you just as much as flying.

I think that you should drive. Flying would be more convienent, but with all of the changes the airports are making, I think it would be a hassle; especially as you are not going across the world or anything. It would probably cost a lot of gas money to drive it, but it would most likely still come in cheaper than flying up there.

Hope this helps!

well i live in pittsburg pa and at the end of the month im going to see my girlfriends parents for the first time in houston tx. flying for me her and the baby will cost 1300 alone in plane tickets i have a small ford escort. that gets 30mpg and i did the math even if gas gets up to 5 buck a gallon it will still only cost 475 dollars do drive it in gas. so we are driving to save money, but on the other hand its a 20 hour drive and 6hr flight,

so i guess it depends on what your driving and how much money and time you have

I wouldnt fly. i would drive

Well I live about 80 miles from San Francisco. It depends if you plan on driving around SF or SJ. If you're just going to basically stay in one place then fly, but if you want to do some traveling around then drive. Also, gas is REALLY expensive around there ($4.50/gal at least), but driving is more flexible. I would drive if money wasn't an issue.

drive u can see the beautiful landscape of california from the south to the north. u can actuallyinteract w/ the land and the people. u never know u might meet some cool people while on ur long road trip. u can make lasting memories on each stop and each interaction. i say drive.

ashweefly
fly... Even thoughit might be a lil scary you get to cut the time of driving in half or even more. but a little note often flying in th summer might mean you are going to have a little turbulance. And especially going over hills. But you would get used to it... have fun!

Joseph B
flying would be alot faster and safer so the sceintest say but if you want to see the sights you should drive i would say driving would be less expencive but with the price of gas you should proably fly.

Rotios
I would fly cecause I love it and is faster. but if you are a person who likes the road and hates flying then drive. it will be from 5-7 hours in traffic

If it's just you going by yourself fly. If you are traveling with others and could split the gas it would be cheaper to drive

kali_girl<3
I think you should fly because of the gas prices and time. Flying is overall cheaper and quicker. Driving is going to be more expensive thanks to rising gas prices. So, I think you should fly. If you have the time and money though, take the drive along the coast, its beautiful!
Good luck!
