Has anyone been to Detroit?

How does it feel living there, is it good or bad? Would you recommend living there?

Detroit is the worst city in the United States. No jobs, No tax base, High crime, Lousy housing, Drugs all over the place, Mean Police Officers, terrible schools. It is best to stay out of Detroit.

Hi. I live in Detroit and I love it! I live in a beautiful neighborhood and my kids can play outside. I've never been mugged or anything like that . I assume these people who answer just go by what they see on the news , true enough it's crime but not to the extremes they speak of. Anywhere you go there's flaws no state is perfect! My kids love it here and so do i.

the main core of downtown, fox theatre, comerica park, greektown is totally safe, fun, lots to do. There are actually some really nice condos springing up on the waterfront that are a steal right now. It's not all bad....

i recommend seeing a pyscharist before doing that . the only reason i am here because I was born in the dirty d. If you are sports, clubs and gambling sure. but we really have nothing here for amusement unless you want to fish up wierd looking fish or watch your grass grow green or gray. Also you watch people get chased by their neighbors crazy pets, lol. i say it can be good and bad . and don't come looking for a job in the city , we really don't have any unless you have some degrees.

Detroit is a great city. I have lived in Detroit 24 years and never experienced any violence or unemployment. Many of the people who answered negatively only come to Detroit for entertainment events. They have never lived in the city. I would suggest living in the following areas: downtown, new center or midtown.

I was born and raised in Detroit. Just before my 29th birthday (about a year and half ago), I moved to Virginia. I still have many family and friends living in the area.

When I left, the city (and surrounding area) was plummeting as a result of the economy. Essentially - EVERYTHING in the area is in someway related to the Big Three (GM, Chrysler and Ford). If any (or all) of those companies are doing poorly, then everyone suffers. And, unfortunately, all three of them have had really crappy years the past few years.

When I left - it was difficult to locate a job in practically any field, and even if you did land one - the pay was awful. From what I've heard, it's still not gotten any better. Many of my friends have either suffered a layoff or have a family member (or two) that have been unemployed.

If the economy ever comes back around, it's not a bad place to live. I wouldn't live in the city proper - I'd recommend one of the suburbs. Most of the suburbs north of the city are nice and have quite a bit to offer in the way of night life. (Royal Oak, Troy, etc)

I was raised in the suburbs of Detroit (westside) and lived all over Detroit in my 20's. I had a blast and met some great creative, hard working people. I worked in the music business and graphic arts at the time and they are really building a lot of nice lofts, etc. EVERY urban area has crime (including MARYLAND AND S.C.). As we have never had a highway snipper, one just has to be wise and safe. I moved out to the water about 60 miles north of Detroit and have children now. But commuted and worked for many law firms over the past 6 or 7 years in Detroit--RIGHT downtown---I walked to my car and ate at all the local establishments and no one robbed me. It was more of a business district and the real estate (lofts, penthouses) are very expensive. Fun suburbs with LOTS to do if you are younger (I am now 41), like Royal Oak, Ferndale, Birmingham, Mount Clemens, Hamtramck, etc.

Detroit no longer is the murder capital--I think it is some place DOWN SOUTH.

Come on out and we'll buy you a martini!!!

grew up there, and still live in the area. not as bad as some say, but not great. Moving to MI would be a big mistake right now, we have the worst economy in the nation, the highest unemployment rate, and more people leaving the state than any other state. if you do want to move here, i suggest not moving to Detroit itself, but the burbs somewhere. there are some really nice areas.

It's great living here. I love the structure, culture and history the city has. As long as you'ree not a crime-related target, the cost of living here is great.

Detroit the actually city? I would say has its ups and downs. If u plan on going to like Greektown or the Detroit Institute of Art its a good area nuthing to bad. Now living there. I would say go to either Macomb County which is going to be ur cities of Clinton Township(use to live there i do recommend it) Warren, Macomb Township, Sterling Heights, Romeo, Utica, Novi, St. Clair Shores all good areas. Or go downriver. Which would b like Wyandotte(beautiful city on the water!), Southgate(lived there to), Allen Park, Lincoln Park( not to good ne more), Flat Rock, Brownstown, Taylor, Riverview, which are all good cities.
I lived there for 18yrs until my mom moved to Scottsdale AZ and i miss it. I would recommend it. A lot of ppl might not b/c its Michigan, but I love it I say give it a chance.

As a native of Columbus, Ohio I now live in beautiful but boring Jacksonville, Fl and we have the highest murder rate in the United States.

When I lived in Ohio I visited Detroit a few times. I loved the food, culture, sports events and night life. However because of the school system, no jobs and no heathcare alone I wouldn't move there. Great place to visit for a weekend trip though!

Detroit is alright, people like to pick on us for some reason though, maybe because were in a slump right now but its still an alright city, its just like any city,if you live in an area of the city that has a high crime rate then yes, your car will probably get broken into if you live in another part that's good then you will probably have a good life with good neighbors, its the same as Chicago,New York, L.A. Dont listen to all the negativity , Detroit is the godfather of American industry we may get knocked down from time to time but we will never give up GO PISTONS

We are in Detroit with relatives at least once a month. They live in Sterling Heights and my wife does her Asian shopping in Madison Heights. Both are nice places with quite a few good restaurants. If I didn't have a job in northern Michigan we would move there. I like it down there. Cheers.

financegal27
I've been to detroit and while I wouldn't necessarily suggest living in detroit, many of the surronding areas are nice. North of the city (all the towns have the hills in their names) is pretty affluent. South of the city (all the towns have the heights in their names) is more blue collar. I definately wouldn't suggest living in the city, but again the suburbs are very nice.

hotstuff
what Erudite said is way not true sure detroit is not the best place but it is NOT the worst place in the US flint is worse than detroit and newyork city also vegas besides the pistons are amazing lol
and what joyce said michigan is a great state to live just not detroit

Real estate is REALLY cheap there. You can buy a whole house for less than the cost of a new car that they build down the road. I have visited several times for about a week, and I have never felt unsafe. I always stayed somewhere downtown, and walked everywhere that we went. We only drove if we went to a suburb. I grew up on a farm in North Dakota (the worst place to live if you like fun!) and I actually like Detroit. Drive around all sorts of places day and night, and you will get a better feel for the neighborhoods. That's not saying that I didn't find myself in a couple scary places in the middle of the night, but I just drove on, and the areas got nicer. Just avoid dock trucks that stop suddenly and a bunch of teenage boys get out of the back and start running. Stop signs and red lights don't count, then.

I would not recommend living in the city of Detroit, but in the suburbs yes. The city is good to go eat and go to a tigers game, but I would never live there.

every city has it's bumps but this one is a hole.i wouldn't suggest it.i have been there several times, and I'm not impressed.

jaluther9877
i would recommend it to younger people as the city is attempting a comeback. it is not very safe, but unfortunately neither are the suburbs these days.
if you are looking for a place to raise a family, detroit is not the place. you can't walk around the block or let your kid play outside alone.

L-O-L-O-L-O-L-O-V-E
I wouldn't trust living there, depending on which area you choose to go to. Most places I've seen have tons of abandoned houses, burnt down houses, and garbage piled up where ever there is room. However, I went to school at Wayne State and I loved it. I wouldn't have wanted to live there though, on campus alone you had to pray your car didn't stolen, someone didn't rob you, or someone bugging you for change. There is a lot of drug dealing and prostitution, oh yes what a fun city!

Detroit is the type of city that this country was built on! If you want to find some culture, Detroit is the place. SO much history! There are amazing restaurants, bars, theatres, just about anything that any other city has, Detroit has as well. I lived there for several years when I was younger, in a "bad" neighborhood, and I seemed to turn out just fine. I also Attended Wayne State University for two years, which is in Detroit, and I had the immense pleasure of living DOWNTOWN just off campus. It was great. Yea there's crime in Detroit, what else is new- it's a major metropolitan city! The whole time I lived there, I had my car broken into once (window broken)- but that's because I was dumb and parked it on an unlit, unattended side street. I was begging for something to happen. Even though there are a couple areas where the crime is high, like some "hoods", the actual CITY of detroit is extremely safe. You never see anything on the news about crime in the city itself- it's always some crack house in some shady residential district. And there are PLENTY of very nice, safe, even affluent residential districts, especially the suburbs. Basically, I never, ever, felt unsafe in Detroit. BUT, I wouldn't move here unless you're planning on going to school here or already have a job lined up- the economy isn't so hot right now, and it might be tough to just move here and find a good job.

I grew up on the border of Detroit and lived in the area for 28 years. I would not move to the actual city of Detroit but there are some good suburbs worth considering. If you have to come to the Detroit area, I would look in the northern suburbs (if you get a good job and have some money) or the downriver area (south of the city, if you have an okay job and need a cheaper place to live).

I used to work in Detroit while living in the suburbs and I can say that the city is crap. Sure, there are a lot of sporting events, there's no shortage of bars and now we have casinos but other than that, there's not much. Traffic into and out of downtown sucks and so does the lack of parking.

Oh, and there is a lot of crime. You may be able to avoid some of it if you are far enough away from the city center but don't think that you're safe in the suburbs. I lived in the suburbs here are some of the things I've experienced in my time:

Walked into a Taco Bell while it was being robbed at gun point.

Had a kid snatch my purse at the mall. I chased him, he jumped into a stolen car and they tried to hit me.

Was "forced" to pay a guy posing as a parking lot attendent, even though I knew he didn't work there. Three big guys to one small girl, not paying was not an option.

Was "forced" to pay some street thugs to "watch" my car when I went into a club. They advised us that if we did not pay, they were confident that something might "happen" to our car by the time we came out.

My car broke down on the side of the expressway and withing 4 hours (the time it took for me to get a tow truck) my windows were smashed and my radio was stolen.

Between my family and friends, we've had 6 cars stolen. One of them was snatched twice (and it was a Neon!)

When my brother's car was stolen, they also ended up with his credit cards and checkbook. It took them one day to spend $10,000 and it took my brother 2 years to clear up all the problems that came with his stuff being stolen.

My friends house was shot up. (Yes, this was in the suburbs)

My son has had two bikes stolen from our closed and locked garage.

I know three people that have been killed in or around the city of Detroit because of random violence.

I was run into a cement median while driving through Detroit by a guy who was pissed that I wasn't driving fast enough. (I'm sure everyone in the Detroit area has their share of road rage horror stories).

There's more but I'll stop for now. And just so you know, I am an extremely cautious person who tries to avoid trouble at all costs. And, I did my best to stay out of the really bad neighborhoods in the metro area.

I left Detroit as soon as I was able to get into an out of state school so that my son would not grow up around the crap that I did. There are so many places in the country that offer a better quality of life. I wouldn't go to Detroit if I had a choice.

Original Swagg
Its nice they have good shopping mall and you can go to a Piston's game or a Tigers game during the season also all those people who are saying that its bad is just saying that from what they heard from the news and what people say Detroit is a good place. But it would be better to live in a suburb outside of Detroit like Troy, Canton, or Bloomfield Hills those are some really good suburb but you can also just live right in Detroit. But those people who are saying its bad doesn't even know its just some parts of Detroit that is bad and like only two parts of Detroit. I'm 13 years old and I have lived in Detroit all my life so trust me.
