i'm probably disqualified to give an answer since i'm a resident, but just in case you're planning on going to nyc... plan for at least 2 separate trips (in your lifetime): the first time, do all the touristy stuff (all the answerers above had great suggestions). the second time, come for the new york city that the locals see and live in every day. from peeking into the grand lobbies of doorman'ed park and fifth aves to picking up gourmet food at zabar's or balducci's to having a drink at one of the neighborhood bars -- lots to do and explore.
also, there are countless off-the-beaten-track gems that make the city very interesting and full of character -- the wave hill gardens, the cloisters, hipster spot williamsburg, the trendy but close-to-fully-gentrified meatpacking district, union sq greenmarket, chelsea art galleries.. to name just a few. |

Yes. Fantastic city. Stayed in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. Amazing architecture everywhere, all kinds of interesting things to see, people and things to do.
I went in 1998 for New Year's. It was incredible. Getting around the city via subway was easy, cheap and fast. So many shops, theatres, restaurants, attractions etc. Lot's of people everywhere, but that's what makes New York what it is.
Great China town. Lots of bargains to be had, you can eat very cheaply there if you stay away from the chain restaurants.
So much to do. Check out the NYC website and plan your trip today! |

I loved it. Traveling is a passion of mine. I don't think I could live in NY, but it's an amazing city. My friend lived near Queens, so I went out there to visit him and see some sites. He was the perfect tour guide. He picked me up from my hotel and brought me anywhere I wanted to go. We went all the way to the top of the Empire State Building one day. That was incredible! It reminded me of "Sleepless in Seatle" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I am also told that the building changes color on special occassions. For Valentine's Day it's red and on Frank Sinatra's death or his birthday it's blue, because he was known as Old Blue Eyes. My friend took me to Chinatown, where we had the best Chinese food I've ever eaten. Have you ever tried the sticky buns? I wish I was there just thinking about it. They're pretty cheap too. Some other places we went were Grant's Tomb and the Metropolitian Museum of Art. You should go there. They have fabulous art. My favorite floor was the paintings. I love impressionism. We didn't get to see the Statue of Liberty, because tickets were sold out. Those people wait in line forever to go across to see it. I did, however, see it from a distance. One of my favorite things I did there was driving through Harlem and taking pictures. I saw the Apollo Theater and even the legendary Cotton Club. I took some great pics. I was blown away when I saw the Cotton Club. Greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, and Duke Ellington played there. Next time I'll have to buy tickets and go inside. Oh, we also drove through Central Park. We didn't have a chance to walk through, but it was okay. I got to walk through Times Square and down Broadway. Next time I'm going to definitely see a play. The last thing I remember doing on my trip was going to Grand Central Station and having a slice of NY cheesecake. How cool is it to eat a piece of NY Cheesecake in NYC. I can hardly wait to go back to the Big Apple. |

Living in Florida, the harsh weather was definitely a surprise. I enjoyed New York so much, though. If you are going to New York City, save up your money and stay at the Marriot Marquis-by far the nicest hotel that I've ever been to in the United States. When we were staying there, Bill Cosby was there to speak at a dinner and I caught a glimpse of him. I was ecstatic. I loved the food in New York-though it was mildly fattening. Katz's Deli was cool, especially since you could sit "Where Harry Met Sally." I was feeling queasy when we stopped there, however, so I didn't eat anything. But at the Marriot Marquis, it is in the center of Times Square, which was an amazing view. My sister saw the Naked Cowboy dude, too. We stopped by TRL and stood outside next to Carson Daly out of pure boredom. We went to the World Trade Center, and got teary eyed at the memorial. We visited the top of the Empire State Building[WARNING-RIDICULOUSLY LONG LINE] and went shopping at the famous Macy's. We took pictures in front of Rockefeller Center and oohed and ahhed over the superstores on Fifth Avenue. We saw Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. Basically, it was the best week of my life. I would recommend a trip to New York City at least once in your life to everyone, because it is definitely worth it. |

i was in lower manhatten in 1/2002 for work , so it was sad and people were not back to normal yet. the businesses were doing very bad down there - the guys who owned the local sandwich and pizza places were begging you to come back after you ate lunch there ... they would give all kinds of free food... we got our work done...it was strange, the office windows no longer faced the trade ctr either like they did just a few mos ago. (was far enough away to be safe, but the windows couldn't miss a view of the thing) |

Yes, it´s a beautiful city to visit (i couldn´t handle living in such craziness, though). You can do so many different things, like visiting art galleries and museums, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty and other amazing views, see a Broadway show and just walk through streets that have that magic that you can only find there. Don´t forget to take the subway, which is also an adventure in itself! |

I went... once. Never will return. It is a fantastic city; great sites and all... but I could not deal with all the people. It overwhelemed me and made me feel closed in.
If you can't handle being cramped... don't go. |

Yes, many times. I live next door in New Jersey.
It's very big. Very busy also.
Everyone seems to be in a hurry.
Driving there one must drive as they do.
It can be intimidating to the uninitiated. |
