Yes. I live here. I was born and raised here. I'm 40 years old. I lived in Texas from age 30 to shortly before I turned 40, so I not only know New York, I have something to which to compare it.
I usually try to avoid critiquing other user's answers, but one person here said some things that are just so incredibly wrong, I'm not sure I believe s/he has been here. I wouldn't want you to make a judgment about coming here based on really bad, really negative information, so:
If a person can't see the sky here, they should try opening their eyes. We have lots of sky.
Yes, we're still cleaning up from 9/11, because we were ******* attacked by monsters and they knocked down two buildings that were for years the tallest in the world. At least we're cleaning up -- thank God we have the money to handle most of that ourselves. If we had to wait for the federal government, we'd be in the same situation as New Orleans.
Yes, it's a loud place. We have constant activity and 8 million residents of the five boroughs and our tri-state area, from which many people commute here to work, has 20 million people. Nonetheless, I don't have trouble hearing the people next to me unless I'm by a construction site or in a club.
If a cab cost this person $25, it was because he took a big trip. I've taken cabs here and tried to do it in Texas and I was aghast at what it cost in Texas. Cabs are a great deal. Nonetheless, we have one of the best mass transit systems in the country so unless you have too many packages to carry, there's no reason not to take a bus or a train. The traffic can be hairy. It doesn't cause a cab from say, one part of Manhattan to another, to go to $25.
The Spiderman thing is ridiculous and this person did NOT witness a drive-by. That's more likely in L.A. and even then, you have to go to the neighborhoods where that happens.
I'm sure this person just meant to be controversial and it worked. I don't like hearing my city smeared that way.
It is an incredible place. It can be really intense if you're here too long without a break, which is why you really have to take vacations to quieter places, but it is the most amazing city, it has tons of culture, everything you could ever want to do (I've lived here the vast majority of my life and I haven't done everything there is to do yet), and is the hub of most of what happens in the world. |

Well.. its a lot of fun because its a melting pot of culture. everyone is doing their own thing and having fun.
basically times square is the busiest place and so much fun at night
you have to go shopping in lower east manhatten.
queens is where i go.
its really busy and SO EASY to gt a TAXI
i dont reccommend th esubway.
but NYC is just really busy place that seriiously never goes to sleep.
if you go to times square at 2 in the morning.. it'lll be as busy as a mall on friday..

yes, i've been there! i was very dissapointed that I had to spend so long there! Next time I visit the usa I'll be avoiding NY
for such a big city theres very little in way of bars and restaurants, not like they make out in films or tv, its big and noisy with plenty of shops if you dont mind waiting half an hour to pay! it takes about an hour to drive a mile but thats about it |

I used to live there. It is the best place in the world. I'm going to move back |

I love it; I've been there twice. But it really depends on the person on how much you really enjoy the city. Everything is fast, the people, the cars, the food. NYC has a distinct smell, and it takes some getting used to in my opinion, but it's nothing you can't get over. Between Broadway and Fashion Avenue, all of the lights and sounds, it's a wonderful place to go to, especially if you're a huge fan of art, architecture, and diversity. Watch out for people trying to sell you things, though. Stick with Chinatown to get good deals. The guys near the Staten Island Ferry, for instance, sold me a pair of earrings for $10 when I could have gotten them for $5 in Chinatown.
The subways are fun, too, but watch out for sketchy people. I've had a crazy old man follow me from Penn Station all the way to Chinatown. Always tip the musicians, no matter how good or bad they are! Chances are, they live in the city and are dirt poor.
Have fun and take tons of pictures!! |

Yes. Tons of fun. Very busy, congested and lots of activity. My friends and I went, mixed up some captain and cokes in soda bottles, threw on our backpacks and ran around the city all day and night drinking and looking at everything in sight. |

i was born and raised in NY. (and now live in San Diego) What kinda details are you looking for? are you looking to take a vacation there, or move there? Places to visit: (if your planning a vacation Times Square, CENTRAL PARK- take a horse drawn carriage around the park!), see a broadway play, Go to all of the musuems (especially Natural History Museum) just walk the streets and see all the local artists and musicians performing.
Hope this helps |

NYC is great! You should really come and visit it. I suggest you to go to the Rockefeller Center. It is really cool and fun to be in there, you would enjoy the shops, museums, and the city itself. I also would suggest you to visit Time Square and Broadway Theater. There are awesome areas and places in New York City. You will love it! Enjoy! |

here are some suggestions and tips from our personal experience:
we went to NY for a week and stayed at the Hilton Embassy Suites.
we had a blast!!!
you should visit Serendipity for dessert :)
http://jotan23.blogspot.com/2008/03/day-1-aug-30-2007-thursday-i-woke-up.html
there's a book called Lonely Planet (NYC)
it is a really really helpful book for tourists like us because it includes walking tours, etc, and places to eat.
by the way, instead of waiting for hours in line to get to the statue of liberty, you may opt to have the NY waterway tour instead. This way, you will save enough time to tour other parts of the city :)
http://jotan23.blogspot.com/2008/03/touring-new-york-city-on-day-2.html
there's also the famous BULL at the financial district :)
you should also try the yummiest Pizza Margherita at 'Lil Frankie in East Village ^,^
if you have more time, try walking the stretch of Brooklyn Bridge.
http://jotan23.blogspot.com/2008/03/traveller-in-new-york-city-day-3.html
this serves as an exercise too.. hihihi
also, do visit Saint Patricks's Cathedral at 5th avenue.
don't miss to go inside.
it's wonderful!!!
we also went to Top of the Rock instead of the Empire State Building to avoid the long line hihihi because we were afraid we won't have enough time to see other parts of NYC :)
for shopping, you may want to visit Century 21, just across the former WTC.
http://jotan23.blogspot.com/2008/03/livin-as-new-yorkers-do-day-4.html
you should have lunch/brunch at Cafe lalo!!! or at Sarabeth's :)
we chose Cafe Lalo hihihi because of the ambiance and because it's famous.
To relax, try having a picnic at Central Park.
http://jotan23.blogspot.com/2008/03/labor-day-in-nyc-day-5.html
we chose to eat at the top of one huge rock there to have e good view of the whole central park :)
then, we went to MET (entrance is by donation only, you don't have to give 20 USD)
if you're a techie like my friends, you may want to visit the MAC store. it is now a tourist spot because of its unique architecture :p
DON'T MISS eating at PARADOU!!!
it's a MUST!!!
trust me on this!
you also gotta watch a broadway show! definitely!
there's WICKED and SPAMALOT :)
