One of Hawaii's most beloved performers died of complications from morbid obesity at the age of 38, having weighed more than 700 pounds at one point. Local sumo wrestlers and sportscaster Robert Kekaula are also frequently seen on TV, apparently quite popular.
Ancient Hawaiians spoke of thinking and feeling with their gut instead of their brains and hearts. From that point of view, all food is brain food. An ignoramus may be called na'aupo or "nighttime gut", while enlightened beings are called "daytime gut", implying that they've been fed recently.
That word, "Na'auao", is also the last name of a singer famous for singing,
"We're going down to that special place,
Where we can bulk up for days.
I like my fish and poi,
I'm a big boy..."
I've noticed that heavier boys seem to dance hula with more confidence, and seem to surf just as gracefully. |

now for a real answer...... No Hawaii is very laid back I lived there for awhile and to be honest most Hawaiian are rather bigger. If you were going To LA or somthing it might be a bit different. but Hawaii is great nobody cares about how you look or what you have! |

No, you won't have a problem if you are skinny, fat, white, black, or purple with green polka dots on you. As long as you show respect to the people around you then they in turn will respect you back. I had more problems with racism in the Southern US in a week than I did in all the years we lived in Hawaii. |

Well hay, you wanna tan your belly, by all means go ahead, just don't forget the sunblock. Just like the people of Hawaii the sun is not predjudice! The ones who wear speedos or g-strings usually get the giggles. |

Hawaii is one of the most diverse and excepting places in the country. I think that as long as you are polite, happy, and respectful of everyone else, they will treat you the same way. |

There are many large Hawaiians my dear man. Not everyone is a svelte surfer...its laid back and ohana here...Ive lived here for 4 years now..and I live in a predominanat hawaiian native homestead area...the people for the most part are polite and aloha spirited once they get to know you. |

Prejudice has nothing to do with a fat man. When someone is prejudgmental, they are making judgments that could very well be false. When I see a fat man, I see a fat man. That wouldn't be false!
I think if you're fat and you take your shirt off, there is the possiblity that you could be made fun of at any beach, not just HI. Some people are mean and rude, and some aren't! |

People always ask me if Hawaiians are prejudiced/racist. Sure there is some racism but not to the degree that people make it out to be. Hawaii is so laid back. |

Nope, you have nothing to be worried about. Plenty of us Hawaii residents have a little (or big) 'opu (tummy!) Don't be shame, come enjoy our waters! (just don't wear a spedo, we do tend to giggle at those European types in the spedos!) |
