Help... Moving south to a big city question!?

Hello!

I live in Wisconsin currently but need to move to a warmer, big city =)

I have been to Atlanta Georgia and love it.. I just keep hearing about all the crime and traffic problems... So now I am debating where I should venture out. I am very independent and would love to head out & do my thing...

Please, if you live in Florida.. Or Georgia.. Or in the west, let me know what your feelings are on where you live & if you like it =) I reaaallly appreciate it.. I am stuck with the decision process....

nikki,
go to atlanta and take me with. Or at least get me a falcons jersey(GO VICK) if i was going to move to a bigger city in another state, i would go to atlanta. When i went to florida, we drove thru atlanta and it was so fun. It seems to be a better atmoshere there. You can tell the difference in people between atlanta and florida. Go with your heart dear and i will miss you.

I live in Santa Barbara, CA. For me it is the perfect place. I am near the University. The town is small but can get very crowded from art festivals, music festivals, cultural events, oh, you name it. Most of the time I get around on my bicycle. The weather, well, it's California. We have the greatest weather. I surf and water ski during the summer and snow ski in the winter. If you can afford it. I highly, recommend it.

i am from Michigan and have been in Florida for 5 years (I am 26) and LOVE it. I get home sick from time to time, but they are all just a plane ride away. I have meade GREAT friends and have grown into a career.

At first its tough, i am not going to lie, but it was well worth it. Whats the worst that could happen? If you dont like it, then go back.

If your young and have no tie downs (kids and such) then why not?!?! Have fun and explore life.

I think you should live in the Southern part of California some where like San Diego or Tucson, Arizona. Both stay warm and have a lot of beaches and a lot of things to do out doors. You'll love it.

I grew up in florida - lived in ga and north carolina and now live in iowa (yuck) I am moving back to florida but prefer Ga. It depends on wha tyou like or dislike. Ga has less rain issues and less humidity. Live outside atlanta like the outskirts and you'll be fine. '

But its all about what you like to do and how you like to live

edit:
ps there are no gators in ga - so you can swim and wade in the water no issues - florida you have to be careful.

I loved how in douglasville ga you can go to state parks and have fun, less humidity, lots of flea markets, great weather, if you are bored - go onthe interstate and drive - you find gold mining, public blue berry picking (you leave money in an honor box), so on so forth.

I also love florida - but for different reasons ( I grew up there I guess)

I've never lived in Atlanta, but my mother's whole family is from there and I've spent a lot of time there. The stuff you've heard about the crime rate is true - especially in the eastern part of town.

If you want to live in the South, check out Charleston, South Carolina. That's an absolutely gorgeous town with a lot of history, nice people, and a beautiful coastline - not to mention great cuisine!

Wherever you end up, if you're in the South - enjoy the peaches!!

Atlanta is having a water crisis. Their reservoir lake is drying up.

Murder rates and all crime rates are higher in cities because the population is higher... which increases the odds of crime happening. Also, crime rates are gathered from police reports. Lazy police, lower crime rate.

Their are plenty of murders here in Jacksonville Florida. About 150 a year sometimes. Other than that, it's not so bad. A neighborhood that is ritzy is safer of course.

Raleigh, North Carolina is a great place to relocate! It isn't nearly as large as Atlanta, and you will definitely need your own vehicle to get around, as the city is spread out over a vast area, and the city buses don't go everywhere you may want them to. Raleigh has a great climate year-round, and is full of educated, sophisticated, and cultured people (especially because of Research Triangle Park).

Raleigh has recently been rated:
- Top 5 city for young singles
- #3 best place for African-Americans
- Top 10 best place to find a mate
- #6 Area for Relocating Singles
- #13 Overall Quality of Like
- #4 Best Places to Live
- #3 Best City for US Bargains
and #1 Best Area Overall (Raleigh-Durham)

Definitely check out the Triad area!

You're going to face crime & traffic problems in any big city you go to, so as long as it's not the murder capital of the States, don't let that me a deciding factor in your decision.

I live in Atlanta, in the heart of the city a few blocks from the georgia dome, philips arena, etc......I really like it. Crime is not bad at all, just be smart. My one complaint is that there are a lot of homeless people, but thats not something they can help. I am considering moving to Miami because i enjoy the beach and the ladies, so i'm interested in seeing if anyone from Miami responds.

ilia_leshchev
i live in atlanta,ga
you should probably move here i like it
but there is really bad traffic during the weekdays
about the crime its only a problem in southern part of the city (the ghetto)
but the northern part of the city is very nice

Southern Comfort
I was born in Atlanta and now live in North Florida. My son is a police sargeant on the Atlanta outskirts. My daughter lives in Wisconsin.
Atlanta is really that bad if you are looking for a career in a large corporation or the service industry. Lots of jobs.
Smaller cities such as Athens, Gainseville, Snellville, Cumming Georgia are nice and growing.
In north Florida Jacksonville is nice and plenty of theme park work in Orlando.
Either way you will have mild winters and long summers. I love the warmth!

I'm in Miami, Fl where it's been averaging the low 80's, mid 70's this "winter". I was born and raised here so I like it just fine. I have lots of family and friends here.

Cons-
It's hard to make real connections with people. To own a house is nearly impossible. It's expensive. Hurricanes every other year. Rush hour traffic. Mosquito's in the summer.
Pros-
We don't have state tax. Close to beaches and the keys. It never snows. Lot's of culture! Art scene is great. Always green. Great parks. Great people watching. Something for everyone. Flights to the islands and most Major cities around the world leave out of here. Vacations spot for out of town family and friends.

Lies exposed: Not like Miami Vice, Bad Boys, MTV, Cops or CSI Miami. South Beach is over rated. Natives are not all into Glam or the club scene...that's for tourists and spring breakers.

Lived in Florida 26 years! If going there go to Orlando.
A lot to do. Remember it's a long drive to go visit family in wisconsin!! also Atlanta is cool! As in any big city becareful and survey the areas , make sure you move into a safe neighborhood. Alot of high rise condos in both area! Make new friends carefully!! Have fun! It's always fun to get out on your own . Oh byn the way jobs at disney are great and they have good health plans!!!

Tampa FL here...I like that I dont have to deal with snow, I like the particular area that I live in, I like the beach...I dont like that it gets so hot and humid in the summer time. Good luck making your decision. :)

I spent some of the holidays in Florida. 75 degrees in late december can't be beat.

I like Florida and Atlanta. If given a preference of where to live I would probably pick Atlanta.

Nyana
Anywhere you move to has its positives and negatives. I live in L.A. now and the traffic here is horrible. It never rains and the heat during the summer is horrible. Ive also lived in Miami and the weather there is nicer if you dont mind the humidity. Now I think you should have added a bit more information about the type of person you are. People in Miami are full of themselves and love the "Glam" life and looking good all the time. If thats the kind of person you are than you would enjoy it, but if youre a down to earth person looking for the same you wont find it in Miami. One thing about Miami is that it is one big party. If thats the kind of lifestyle you like then it will suit you.

I mean any city that your gonna go to has crime. I wouldn't really worry about it at all. I lived down there for a time and I came out of it pretty well. you may be wondering why i moved from atlanta..... military. But I go back all the time just. know right from wrong and you'll be ok!

Dying to Live
If you want a great city in the south, try Dallas, TX.

ga_tx_1992
I live 20 mi south of Atlanta. Atlanta is a big town with a widespread metropolitan area. One thing you notice is the mix of cultures. There are American Indian, Cajun, African, Asian, etc. influences in Atlanta. As far as the weather goes, it can get dramatic. Summers are hot, while winters are cold. Some days you just don't know! Most people down here are friendly. There is crime, but if you keep to yourself and stay away from the areas, you'll be fine! Some problem areas include Fulton Industrial area, Riverdale, Old National area, and generally S. Atlanta.

go to Hong Kong, no gun violence but then you need to learn new language.

All large metropolitan areas have traffic and crime. It probably isn't that different where you are now. Do as much research as you can on the city where you wish to go and remember that a relocation is a very traumatic and stressful thing. It will take you awhile to adjust. All areas have their own issues.
