Hi, can anyone tell me about good and bad areas in Cincinnati? |
I'm moving from Bloomington, Indiana, and would like to know which areas are unsafe in terms of crime and which areas to avoid. I would also like to know where the nice, relatively safe neighborhoods are, with restaurants, groceries, theatres, etc.
I am looking at a few apartments in the Hyde Park area, but I don't know if you have any recommendations. I will deeply appreciate any advice/suggestions. Thanks. Additional Details Some more info about me:
1) I'm single
2) l'll be working in Xavier University
Thanks again. |

If you're working at Xavier, Hyde Park is a nice location - if you can afford it. There are also the communities of Mount Adams and Mount Lookout, which are about a 10-15 minute commute to X. All of these neighborhoods tend to be a bit pricey, though.
A more economical option would be Norwood, which is the municipality bordering Xavier; it's a decent enough town - though not as glitzy and glamorous as Hyde Park - and most areas are pretty safe. It would mean a shorter commute than the other options. |

I recently graduated from college and moved to Hyde Park. BEST DECISION EVER! It's full of younger people and very safe. Especially if you can get within close proximity to the square. I love just going for a walk/run - it's truly a wonderful area. Oakley and Mt. Lookout aren't bad either, and if you're really fancy, check out Mt. Adams...while the lifestyle is appealing, it's not always practical to live up there. I don't really like the suburban areas like West Chester, Fairfield, Loveland, Mason, etc. If you're looking to meet people, you're better off in Hyde Park, Oakley, Mt. Lookout, etc. |

I'm in the check out Northern Kentucky camp, east side of Newport is nice, and near entertainment with Newport on the Levee. Fort Thomas and Bellevue are good too. I would stay away from Covington, Dayton and the west side of Newport |

Hyde Park/Oakley, Mt. Lookout, Blue Ash are all decent areas to commute to X from, with low crime. Mason and Lebanon arent too bad of commutes either (35-45 minutes depending on traffic) if you want to be more suburban. Stay out of Norwood, Avondale, Over the Rhine, Bond Hill, Northside, College Hill, etc if you value your life. I personally wouldnt recommend Clifton either, although other people like it. |

It depends on where you work and if you have family. Over-the-Rhine is the place to avoid. Also don't stay in Price Hill or Bond Hill or Avondale.
The suburbs of West Chester and Mason are good and the school district is great also. If you single, people tend to want to live in the Hyde Park, Oakley area. Kenwood is also nice. If you will be working downtown, Hyde Park would be your best bet. Commuting from West Chester or Mason downtown can be painful. |

My brother in law is a Cincinnati police officer...the "best district" to get assigned to is the 2nd district which includes Hyde Park. It is considered the safest. I believe the 4th district is undesirable from a safety point of view. I listed a web page that breaks down the crime stats in each district (and then breaks in down to each area)...if you click on each district it will show the cities it includes. Generally, the further out from the river (and the colleges) you will see less crime. Welcome the the area, please don't be scared. I've lived here for years and never run into trouble.
Oh, just a little after thought...I have lived on both sides of the river and can't complain about either. One thing to consider though is "Are you a smoker?" OH has a strict ban on indoor smoking that goes into effect this year, KY on the other hand allows smoking in public...I know a lot of Ohioians are traveling to KY to eat out and for the nightlife. If these are things that are important to you, you may want to consider being closer to the KY side. If you are a nonsmoker you may really appreciate the smoke-free enviroment in OH...just a little something no one else had mentioned. |

I agree with me2 and suggest checking out the KY side of the River. Less expensive and where a lot of the nightlife is located especially on the River itself. Easy access to expressways and actually closer to Xavier than West Chester, Mason area. ABout 15mins if its not rush hour. |

Well, Downtown, Cincinnati, Queen City, Price Hill, some places in Hyde Park are very high in crime rate. Delhi a little town out side of downtown little to no crime, i don't know where you want to move to but i am from Cincinnati it is really great i hope you enjoy and places outside downtown are nice |

should be working is 110% right! Hyde Park and Mt Adams. You will be drawn to Mason and West Chester. They are both super clean and super safe. Having said that, almost everyone is married with kids in those areas. And having worked downtown while living in West Chester, trust me when I say you will get sick of that drive real fast!
Hyde Park and Mt Adams are wonderful for young single people and are just a stone's throw from X.
The only reason I would shy away from the KY side (altough you can smoke in bars--if you do that) is because my friends that live in KY and work in Cincy hate dealing with the traffic crossing the bridge. Kinda annoying.
I think you don't have one in Bloomington so i will say this: WhiteHouse Black Market. There's one in Hyde Park and it's the best :)
If you are looking for convience (as far as food and theaters go... i'd say stick with Hyde Park (can't go wrong/its the whole package)...all of should be working's choices are great.
If you want fun and loads of other single people...i'd go with Mt. Adams.
Either way, just enjoy Cincy and have fun @ the Crosstown Shootout next year :) |

I live near Oxford, so I am not really close to Cincinnati but I know Over The Rhine is seriously scarey!! Try calling the local police departments and ask them about the number of break-ins per year, the number of murders, assaults, etc, before signing a lease or anything! |

I'm not from Cincy so I will leave the others to give you their opinion.
BUT - if it's crime figures or that kind of info, the Cincinnati police dept website has crime figures and links to info about the city from that perspective.
Good luck with the move! |

I've always liked the Kenwood area but too pricey for me. It has everything you've mentioned. Mason/West Chester are good areas too but not as close to downtown (about 35-45 minutes) depending on what part of Mason/West Chester.
If you want a safe neighborhood, take the advice as mentioned above, stay out of the City limits.
Good Luck! |

stay out of the cincinnati city limits. from what you're telling us here, fairfield is a perfect fit. tons of apartments, condos & townhomes. check out wildwood. as safe an area as you'll get in cincy area. theaters and restaurants all around. and the greatest grocery store in the world - jungle jims. seriously, i've lived in and around fairfield for many years, take a ride in the area, it's you. |

You don't say where you will be working but unless you are going to be to the north of Cincinnati I would seriously consider over the river (Ohio that is....not Over- the- Rhine) in northern Kentucky.
There are some great neighborhoods old and new and you get a lot more for your money - also you have easier access to the airport.
Although downtown Cincinnati is undergoing some regeneration it is still pretty dead at night - no pun intended - . The Aronoff Centre for the Arts, Taft theatre and the Music Hall are all downtown though.
The Newport and Covington areas in Kentucky have tons of restaurants and bars and a huge movie theatre.
Hyde Park is nice but expensive - have you looked at Loveland, Mt Adams or Mariemont - all nice areas in Ohio. Mariemont has it's own little theatre showing artsy films etc.
Hope this helps a bit!!! |
