It depends on you.
Austin: Dry heat in summer, good hair, quirky artsy people, big city, beautiful hill country, more expensive rent for small areas, live music mostly downtown, older buildings, houses and apartments. Lots of laid back people who walk everywhere. Uphill biking. Lakes and such around.
Houston: Humid heat in summer, bad hair, friendly normal people, bigger city, lush green lawns, less expensive rent, live music and cultural events all over town, new lofts, houses and apartments. Lots of busy working people who drive everywhere. No hills. Close to the bay and lots of other water is around town too.
I live in Houston area and I go to Austin alot. Both are great places. |

Austin is sooooooooo beautiful, the water, the hills. But I live in Houston, but Austin is wonderful to visit. |

Wanna bet you get the opposite answers to this post over in the Austin section? I saw that one too.
Houston by a mile. Austin is full of loony, anti-progress lefties who want the same drug-addled college town they remember from the 70s. While Houston has it's faults, you couldn't pay me enough to live in Austin. |

Houston, I've lived here my entire life.
Austin is just plain weird... they like to keep it that way. |

the only thing austin has that's good is 6th street! other then that austin is just another city with a huge state capitol dead smack in the middle...
At least with Houston, you get the whole enchilada.. great nightlife, nice people, tons of things to do during the week/weekends, inexpensive to maintain a good quality of lifestyle, and we have some of the best eating places you could ever ask for! I don't know what that other person was talking about when they said we think we are New York. We are Houston.........everything's bigger in Texas! |

To live, Houston but Austin is great to visit. Houston has waaaay more cultural events; opera, symphony, ballet, Broadway shows, art exhibits, etc.
Austin has SXSW but that is it culturally, it is fun for a few days though. |

Well, I've lived in both. I liked Austin since it is in the Hill Country and quite as humid. Houston, however, is more culturally diverse and better night life. |

I have lived in both and both are close to my heart. The summers in Austin are a lot of fun. It's close to the Guadalupe river, Lake Travis, Lake Austin, great nightlife, free outdoor concerts, lots of festivals, and so on. Houston on the other hand has better job opportunities, great shopping, outstanding food, and close to the beach. Both are great, but you have to figure which place fits your personality better. |

I grew up in Houston and went to college in Austin. I would say Austin is much better, Houston has gotten too crowded and is just too large of a city. It has it's good points however Austins good points out weight them. |

Austin if you have a good job that can support the higher cost of living, Houston if you prefer big city life and all of it's ups and downs.
I live in Houston but can't get enough of Austin |

Austin. Houston I think has the delusion that it's NYC. |
