How can I learn to love LA, CA? |
I moved to Los Angeles about 6 months ago, and I'm still having a really hard time enjoying it. I hear that it's pretty common when people first come here. I don't want to give up on the city, but I'm trying to make it home and it seems to keep pushing me away... so to speak.
Has anyone been through the same situation? Any pointers or stories of hope? lol... I feel a little like a whiner. I'm living in this beautiful place and I just don't like it. If you can relate, please help out. |

I haven't learned to love LA and I grew up here. It's a dump. I moved away for a year and had to come back. I plan on moving away permanently this time. There is really nothing fancy about LA. . |

I moved here just after my 8th birthday. Both my parents hated it here. They were from small towns and slow paced environments. They were from a region that has had problems with chronic unemployment for both professional and working class folks. Having charity food boxes was a common experience.
My sister and brother and I had terrible problems with our health during the winter months in the town where we came from.
My parents got over their hatred of the place when they both went a solid year with uninterrupted pay checks. They even got happier when they started to meet new friends at church. They were even happier during that first winter when none of us got sick. And finally, they started to got over it when numerous friends and famlies from the old neighborhood started to move out here. And they were completely satisfied when they enjoyed the first season of fresh citrus fruit and the fragrance of the blooms.
There are times I wished i lived in a small town, had neighbors that were there when my grandparents died and saw my children grow up. But I am reminded of: the diversity, the overall tolerence of those that are a little different than the norm; the fact that I could afford community college and state college, that I live twelve miles from the beach and do see the ocean everyday.
I was able to obtain an advanced college degree that would be considered a pipe dream in the region where I came from.
While I miss the snow and the changing of the season; I do not miss the life threatening illnesses I get when cold over a long period of time.
I must say Los Angeles has become home. Making a home where you live is the important thing. Living here is a royal pain in *** some times. But it is home. My thoughts and prayers go out to you while you rebuild your life here. |

I wish i was still in L.A., i just moved to the east coast 4 months ago (D.C. to be exact) and totally hate it here. I guess i'm in a similar position as yourself. Heres some advice enjoy the lack of humidity, the awesome weather, the multiculturalness and the overall laidback attitude in the westcoast. i know i would be if i was there. *tear |

I grew up in orange county which is only like an hour away from here, I never really hated LA but it annoys me sometimes, traffic, noise, places close by 6pm. but you need to explore more, take the subway, go the museums, get tickets to go on talk shows, (Jimmy kimmel, Jay Leno) look up events going on in your area. if old enough, go to clubs, meet new people, sure right now LA is boring for me, because none of my friends live here, and I don't have anyone to explore with, but going back to orange county is just as boring, right now a there's filming going on in my apartment building, back in OC a car backfiring is the entertainment of the day. and when it comes to jobs and schools there's a way wider selection to choose from here. Take advantage of whats available in LA |

Get out and do things.
You can find just about anything in LA. What do you like? Beach, Broadway shows, pop concerts, sports, clubs, or whatever. You'll start liking the place once you get out and meet people and have fun. |

If you're from the midwest or, more especially, the east coast, Los Angeles will be hard to get used to.
What, exactly don't you like about it? I bet I know, but you should be more revealing. |

Drive to about 40th street in Newport Beach with your bike. Hop on the trail and peddle down to the 1st street pier. Walk to the end of the pier and have a milk shake at Ruby's. If you do it in the winter you have a perfect view of the snow capped mountains.
Get past the traffic...and the smog

It took me about a year or so. I made a choice: Which do I like better, being stuck in the snow or stuck in traffic?
Hum............ Traffic is eaiser for me than the snow. Then I started to love it. |

Well, what i love the most about L.A. is well almost everything. I love its history, its name, and its multiculturalness. There is so much to do here that you just can't get bored
But first of all, i love just going over an overpass or on the 105/110 carpool interchange and looking at the skyline in downtown set against the mountains in the background (especially during the winter when the mountains have snow).
Also just going to the beach and walking down the small bikepath that goes from santa monica to redondo beach (i think) and staring at all the nice houses on the beach and just watching the sunset. Usually on most days you can see dolphins swimming by which i find really cool.
I also like just driving around, i mean i used to live in compton and it never seemed so bad. people usually cal LA a dump but only certain areas are like that. oh so i like driving around going from compton to the beach and just taking pacific coast highway up to beverly hills and rodeo drive.
well this is getting long but you have lots to love about L.A. cuz it has so much to offer, great schools, great shopping, great entertainment and its probably the only place where if you wanted to, you could go surfing and snowboarding on the same day in 70 degree weather. Hope you adjust to L.A. youll learn to love it |

Move out of the city, and into Orange County - central or southern portions..... The people are friendlier, and it's a more family-oriented environment |

Don't look to the place to be home, look to the people. Los Angeles has a diverse group of people. Look for the good ones, join a group doing a activity like exercise or quilting or anything. You will get use to Los Angeles. I'm from Los Angeles but I'm going to College in Louisiana. At first I was home sick but after seeking comfort from great new friends, I find myself calling my dorm home.
Hope I helped. |
