It is 160 miles downtown Austin to downtown Houston. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive.
With the traffic in Austin being as bad or worse than Houston, I travel to Austin by different routes depending on where in Austin I need to be.
If I need to be on the north side of Austin, I will take 290 all the way.
If I need to be on the south side of Austin, I will take I-10 to Columbus and I will take 71 into Austin.
I-35 is under constant construction in Austin. If you take 290 all the way and you have to be south of downtown, you can add 1 hour to your trip.
It really depends on what you want to do in Austin to decide on whether or not to take a bus or rent a car. If you have a lot of places you want to visit in Austin, you should rent a car. If you are only going one place, the bus might be a good answer. |

Miles - 200 ish
Takes - 2 hours
Bus is good if you find transportation once you get there
but with your own rent car you can tour the city and all of it's site in and aroubd Austin, great place to be. |

Taking the bus will save air pollution. Make sure you catch an express bus--that will take about 3 hours, as opposed to 5 for the local. |

Austin is about 2.5 hours away from Houston.
You can take 290 to the north and west of town, or I-10 west to 70, then 70 north to Austin. In the spring the 290 route is awfully pretty with the wildflowers, but highway 70 is always nice, too... if you like rolling countryside as far as the eye can see.
Extra bonus on 290 is a stop in Brenham where the best ice cream in the country is made--Blue Bell.
Definately take the drive, if you have the time. Bus service is available (go greyhound, you know) but you don't have the freedom to stop and smell the proverbial roses and it takes twice as long, assuming everything goes well.
A plane ride is about 30 minutes point to point, but you have to fight the airports. |

Rent a car that way you won't be uncomfortable on the bus. Take 290 Highway all the way. |

Man, rent a car like some have already suggested. |

Rent a car and drive it. It only takes about 2 1/2 hours to get there, and buses are scarey at best. |

Its not too far away so renting a car is a good idea. |

I had to take the Greyhound when I lost my license...it takes about 5 hours because of all the stops. The plus side is that you can sleep the whole time. |

From 1960 & 290 to 290 & i35.. its 144 Miles.
Im sure there is a bus service but I reccommed you drive it. Its a nice peaceful drive. Just make sure you dont forget to do the loopy thing right after Brenham, otherwise you will end up in Summerville. |

About 300, depend on Houston's location where you live. Rent car is a good recommendation. Austin is not like NYC. |
