The best way is to know where you're going, and about how much it should cost to get there.
Official site of the Las Vegas Taxi Authority
http://www.taxi.state.nv.us/faresfees.htm
This site has a chart showing approximately what the fare should be from McCarran to your hotel.
The most common rip off is "taking the tunnel", if you are going to the strip area don't let the cabbie talk you into taking the tunnel. This will double the fare.
1-702-668-4000
Write that number down and take it with you, if the cabbie tries to "long haul" you, call the TA from the cab. Do NOT pay. The cabbie can get a heavy fine and lose his license for cheating you.
If you catch them, they will generally back down in a hurry, tell you no charge and drive away.
We use the bus or free hotel shuttles almost exclusively.

The #108 & #109 CAT bus stop at McCarran, it's $2.50 for a 24hr pass.

I've been there dozens of times and never ripped off by the cabbies. They usually want to get you where you need to go as soon as possible so they can get back in line to pick up another fare. Sometimes they do take the freeway if you're traveling between the Strip and Downtown, but it's actually faster that way.
What are you worried about being ripped off about? It's not like they can charge you an exoribtant amount without raising suspicion. If anything, thats better than riding that crowded smelly Deuce bus. |

When I was there, I was surprised by how inexpensive they were. I hadn't heard any horror stories of people being ripped off by them. I did always get a taxi that was hired from a hotel, maybe they were more reputable, I don't know. I just found it cheaper and more convenient to use a taxi. Maybe I was just lucky! |

The city has riders that take cabs to various places.
They know the shortest routes and if the cabbie tries to take the "scenic route" they usually lose their license.
It is rare that a cabbie will rip you off there but it does happen. |

Not everybody is trying to rip you off. Cab drivers provide a valuable service.
In the alternative, take a shuttle from the airport to your hotel room on the strip. From there take the bus or tram to your other hot spots. |

just take the cab, it's not a ripoff considering it'll take you forever to walk anywhere that's not next door. If you want to save money, share the cab with other people. The cabbies know the fastest way, they're not trying to make a million dollars on one customer. It's in their best interest to drop you off as fast as they can so they can pick up another fare. |

I agree with previous answer that they're not all trying to rip people off, but with that said I'll tell you that I haven't taken a taxi in LV in probably 6 years.
I rent a car, since I've got places I want to get to all over the city and taxis would cost hundreds of dollars in the end.
Hybrids like the Prius are more and more available, so after the initial price of renting (watch travel websites for deals, maybe Priceline for one) the cost is quite low. My recent trip I drove out to Summerlin for the weekend, back to the strip for last couple of days, with a drive to Henderson at one point, and only had to put a total of about 6 gallons of gas in! Nice!
But I also agree with others that if you're headed to one location, like mid-Strip or Downtown, and plan to stay there the whole time, line up a shuttle or limo from the airport and then just WALK. You'll probably need to burn off some calories anyways after a few days of drinks/buffets/dinners/etc. |

In Vegas-they have the Tram--it goes behind some casinos along the strip- you can get on and off and then walk around to the casinos----it is very inexpensive(don't remember the exact amount) and it is very quick! Have fun!!
Maybe to get to the strip-you might need a cab--they are suppose to have the rates on the dash where you can see them---cabs aren't cheap anywhere! |

The cab drivers are not self emplyed they are ALL run by a company so you cant negotiate and they dont "rip you off". I have never been ripped off by a taxi driver there. The $6 it takes to get me and my husband around safely is WORTH IT!!! Dont be cheap people, the taxi fare is less than the cost of 1 DRINK. ( Which im sure your sparing no expense for) I would pay $6 to keep from getting a DUI. I would pay $50 or $100 if it ment we could have fun and still be resposable. (And come one its split how many ways?)
Just suck it up and pay. Walking 2 miles in highheels at 3am is just plain stupid. And dont forget to TIP!!!!! |

1. Tell the driver you destination and inform the driver politely not to "Long Haul" you.
2. Tell the cabbie that the last time you were in Vegas, it cost roughly the amount from this website (a previous posting's website does not work):
http://taxi.state.nv.us/FaresFees.htm
3. Watch out for either a foreign driver who may try not to understand you or an extremely friendly, talkative driver.
4. If you have been treated properly, tip 10-15% plus $1 per bag if the bags are at all heavy. If they tried to rip you off but you are not in the mood to put up a fuss, don't tip anything.
5. If you are really aggravated, call the Taxicab Authority at 702-668-4000 and complain |

My uncle (who travels a lot for business) always gives this advice for taking cabs no matter what city you are in:
Be as annoying as possible, so annoying that the cabbie wants you out of their cab as soon as possible. Sounds silly, but it works.
Oh, and please do NOT follow Kim H's advice ... violence against a cab driver (or any one else) is NEVER a good idea! Cabs are also getting equipped with cameras to prevent things like that from happening. |

Dont use them is the simple answer, but if you do neogotiate the price before you go. Most cabs use a meter so you should have no problem. Better still is to use the hotel shuttle buses which are free, they travel from hotel to hotel along the strip with various drop off points inbetween. |

i was going to say walk too, but instead i would suggest you decide your price before you get in the cab. or try a bus. |

Don't walk - it is pretty far, the strip seems smaller than it is. Take the tram or get a reliable cab. I have never had a problem using the tram or getting a cab. Just decide here you want to go and plan things out a bit. |

It's almost like impossible.
Prepare a lot of $5s and $1s, never give them $20 bill to change coz they will keep all the change and only give you few dollars back. Last time my ride costs me around $10 and I gave him $20 that jerk only willing to give me back $5 so he charged me $5 for tips.
Also make sure he doesn't take the freeway to the airport if you are from the strip. If he has to take the freeway, make sure he's not taking the tunnel. If he does, he's TOTALLY ripping you off BIG time!!!!
I hate cab drivers in Vegas but no choice. I don't like to take bus with 50 other people together... |
