How crazy is this idea? 10 points for best answer!? |
OK, so I'm going into my senior year of highschool and am starting to think about college and careers. I love learning about nutrition, and also love to write. I've even self published a book! My dream is to move to Los Angelous (I love the warm weather there and the beaches---was there once on a short vacation). I want to go to college there and pursue a career working as a nutritionist or, if I can get my feet in the door, work in a health magazine company like Health or Fitness Magazine. Are there a lot of magazine companies in LA, because I have been researching and can't find any info. on it. Also, how crazy is this idea? I don't really have a social life where I live now, in PA. I don't have many friends, but am very close to my family. I would probably get very homesick in LA because I would rarely be able to see them (maybe once a year). That thought is scary, but the thought of moving to LA is exciting! What do you think? |

I'm not sure about the market in magazines, but with a degree as a dietitian and a portfolio you might be better off writing health segments to say, PBS, network news stations and cable networks. Create your niche and stand out. Maybe get a nutritional podcast going, and keep going. With more than half the country overweight, and people living longer, teaching people about nutrition is more important than ever.
You don't need to move to L.A. to get a good education/degree in nutrition, plus it might be cheaper to live with your parents while going to school, working part-time, save all your money and then when you graduate from college, find a job in L.A. and make your move. L.A. housing isn't cheap, and the places with the lowest rents aren't places I'd recommend to my friends. Tuition is a lot more for non-residents, and you'll probably need a car to get around, including insurance.
Think things through carefully and then make a plan. Good luck! |

Our 18 year old son wanted to move to ''California'' because he met a girl on the internet and I prayed that he wouldn't go alone in case he got lost and didn't have enough money. He ended up not going. If I was you, I'd ask your parents. |

you need a lot of money if you are going to actually live in the LA area, it is insanly expensive (my mom is a realtor, she would know) a little shack in the right place could be worth millions, if i was you, id opt for new york. i know they have a TON of magazines in the city. |

i think i would see where the magazines are at that you want to work at and go there. see if what colleges offer internships at those magazines. that would make the most sense to me. you might have to double major in journalism and nutrition. find the contact info for the magazines you are interested in or write them and see what kinds of credentials/education one would need to work at them. the best intentions don't always lead to a goal. do the research, and then make a very informed decision. that's the best bet. |

Hi Missy,
Nowadays, most writers are freelancers. With the internet you can contribute articles from almost anywhere. So, you could live in PA and submit stories to magazines and other periodicals anywhere in the world. If you want to be a staff contrtibutor, contact them via e-mail which is on their masthead and find out how a writer gets a staff position.
Good luck! |

Lots of people go far away for college.
You probably could get home more often than once a year -
probably Christmas and spring breaks, plus the summer.
There are quite a few universities in the LA area
to choose from, with different costs and levels of
competitiveness for admission. Bear in mind that
as a non-California resident (at least for the first
year), you would be subject to higher tuition at any
of the public universities, so cost might become an
issue.
LA is not really known as a publishing center -
the entertainment and aerospace industries are big here -
I think of New York for that, but I suppose there
are magazines published from everywhere these
days.
Another thing to remember is that living somewhere
is quite different from being there on vacation. All of
California, Los Angeles especially, is crowded and
expensive. That doesn't matter very much when you
are on vacation, but it can make a big difference
when you come to live.
It's true the weather in LA is near ideal, that's one of
the main reasons that there are now 38 million people
living in California (nearly 1/8 of the entire US population).
There are about 4 million in the City of
Los Angeles and over 10 million in LA County.
Some days it seems all of them are on the freeway
at the same time.
Anyway, your idea is not crazy - lots and lots of
people have done exactly that - but living in LA may
not be quite the life in paradise you imagine, so
think about other options too. |

This is a GREAT! idea....bring your family with you find a home for sale (maybe a foreclosed one- they are cheaper) and sell your home...move over there and you all will be very happy. Go on for your career....yea there are a lot of magazine companies in LA....so enjoy yourself sell the house buy a foreclosed home and make money and be with your family!!! P.S. Start selling the home now and at a cheaper than normal price so there will be buyer!!!! PLEASE GIVE ME BEST ANSWER!!!!!!!!! |
