epitome of innocence

How dangerous is NYC really?

I'm 18 years old(at home still, commuting to college) and my bf and I want to go to NYC over vacation.

My parents literally think that I'm going to get murdered or raped if I go to NYC. Or maybe held at gunpoint and robbed. If I go.

I've been before, I know how the grid system works, I'd be meeting a friend that they know who lives in NYC. I'd be going to the popular tourist spots, not creepy back alleys.

What are the chances of something bad happening to me in NYC?

The good news is that statistics show the crime rate is far less this year than last. Last year there were about 43 murders a day. This year it is down to about 24 a day. These figures are included in the 7100 violent crimes a month which are current figures.
The bad news is if you or someone you know is among the 7100+.
Statistically with a little over 8,000,000 people there are very few odds, providing you don't go looking for trouble, that a visitor will fall prey to a serious crime.
There are some good rules to follow and these can be found by google at N.Y.P.D.
Most visitors want to look good and forget about things like not putting a wallet in the back pocket, a purse with strings, visible jewelery, and such.
A person can be at the wrong place at the wrong time or can, by ignorance, place themselves there. Don't be in the second group and watch the subways.

NYC isn't that bad. Trust me, i'm 13 (b-day's not till the first day of fall, 9/21) and I can walk a mile or two(if I wanted to) around my neighborhood. Going this thursday.

Okay, first off, the grid system is in Manhattan which is only 1 of the five boroughs. So where exactly do you plan to go? If you stay in Manhattan, then you'll be fine if you use common sense. Just don't go though Harlem or Hell's Kitchen without a buddy at night.

If you're going to Brooklyn, well there are some shifty areas. Brooklyn Heights may be getting more upscale, but it has some crime in it. Again, keep your eyes open and use common sense and you'll be fine.

Staten Island...Okay, at the risk of my cousin yelling at me for ignoring her homeborough, Staten Island is nothing to be worried about cause you won't go there if you're a tourist.

Queens is also very good too, but it's more residential. Still, I'd watch myself around Ozone Park. I look at it this way: Queens had only one murder in the past year.

The Bronx? Well this is certainly where you'll wanna look like you know where you are. If you're in South Bronx, just get out of there as soon as possible, it's very dangerous there. However if you're in Riverdale, just stay in Riverdale or go to Manhattan via the subway. Riverdale is one of the nicer parts of the borough, but you don't wanna stray too far away from it.

lol the chances are pretty slim actually, especially if you're with your bf. Sometimes it's dangerous if you're out really late at night on an empty street and you're by yourself. But if you're going to the popular spots, the chances of something bad happening are pretty much one in a million. So have fun and don't worry, and convince your parents not to worry either. NYC is a great place and it's not nearly as dangerous as people make it out to be. It didn't even make Travel Channel's top ten most dangerous cities (based on crime rate)! lol

Its pretty safe, obviously don't do anything stupid but its safe the only thing is that people are rude and that's not really a big issue

the chances are probably 5% chance

you wont get murdered or raped if you use common sense to avoid anything that looks suspicious, and stay with your group, other than that manhattan is safe if you stay in the tourist areas.

Its more what you see on the Law & Order and all those tv shows!.
Just dont go to the Bronx late on night and you'll be fine!, I'm not from NYC, I'm a Bostonian!, but I've been to NYC lots of times, and i have walked over Manhattan and Queens WAY TOO DRUNK! at 4am and nothing happened to me, (maybe I'm so lucky), and a roomate I had back in 2007, make one of the most stupid things I think, he slept on CENTRAL PARK!, all night long, but nothing happened to him!, NOTHING!. So, its not what you hear! but still, TAKE CARE!!

Well, I was raised in NYC, I have walked with a gold chain($400) laptop and $1000 in my pocket.
My girlfriend is an accountant(CPA) sometimes she comes at 10pm in the train with her laptop from downtown Manhattan. she's been doing this for 5 years.
We have been taken the subway all our entire lives and we are still alive, we are both light skin Latinos, professionals, so is not like I walk with a gun in my hand.
My point, NYC is safe, just use common sense. If you see 2 guys ghetto looking at 3am, cross the street.

Clearly your parents have never been to NYC. I just hate when people who have never been decide that they know how unsafe a place it is.

It's not. It's been the number 1 safest large city in the US for a couple of years now based on crime statistics. While Detroit and St. Louis have been 1 and 2 for the most dangerous in the US.

Hell's Kitchen is not the unsafe place it used to be. NYC has even tried to change its name to Clinton so people don't think of it badly anymore. Harlem is huge and only a small part of it is still iffy.

Yes, things happen in NYC. Things happen everywhere. Hell, my dad lives in a TINY town (not even 200 people), and they had a rape/murder just a year and a half or so ago.

You wouldn't walk around your own town at night going down unlit streets or waving your cash around, so you wouldn't do it in NYC either. If you have no street smarts at all, then you could be a target, but you'd be a target anywhere with no sense of personal safety.

You will be fine. Former reputations (deserved and not deserved) of NYC just have not gone away. And all the cop shows don't help. Actaully, if you happen to catch one fo them filming, that's most likely the closest you'll get to a gun or any crime.

If you have common sense and don't do stupid things - like getting drunk by yourself or walking alone in a sparsely populated area after dark or flashing around a lot of cash - you should be fine. NYC isn't Mayberry, so you can't trust everyone you meet because there's a lot of shady characters out there, but that's true of any large city. I look at it this way - many of us make our own destiny and if one acts the idiot, bad things are going to happen.

LOL ur parents are retarded!
i go there all the time, its only like a half hour away, and nothin ever happens to me
i highly doubt u will get murdered haha

It's really not that bad. I think to people who don't live there it seems very dangerous, because you guys are only hearing about the rapes and murders on the news and stuff, but it's pretty safe and you basically just have to be in the right parts to be safe. If you stay in the right parts, there is very small chances of something bad happening to you.

Native New Yorker
My friend, New York City is a very safe city to live and to visit. Why more than 46 million people visited the city last year? If it was not for the safety of this city and its low crime rate, those 46 million people would have not visited New York City at all.

You will get murdered, raped or shot in New York City. This city is known as "The Safest Big City in America."

Good luck
