Ask Mike

How do you plan to spend Memorial Day? Will high gas prices keep you home?

Eat in a nice restaurant or café. High gas prices? Riding on a bus would be a good idea.

I'm lucky to live in S.F where the transportation is satisfactory and that includes the bay area. There's always something going on. You have too be careful how you spend your funds. As far as driving, well my car stays parked. We're getting screwed by our politicians. I'm sure they have free gas, etc, at our expense (tax payers dollars).

had no plans - like usualy - just do some yard work

I'll be working. As the manager of a movie theatre, I usually have to work at times when others are enjoying leisure time. Memorial Day weekend is traditionally one of the best weekends of the year for movies, and maybe high gas prices will send more people to the movies rather than out to the lake or out camping.

Peekaboo
I'll be either two things.

One: working... which I hope I don't have too... :D

or

two: staying at home and having a bbq, going for a swim in the pool, which I think maybe a wee bit cold for me. My kids might want to though.. Not me!!!! NO wayyyy! I'm a chicken! ha ha... play wwi with my family and finacee'.. I don't know. I haven't thought that far ahead. :D .... yet ....

Yes I will be staying home, more than likely will call several people, have a party at our house, go to a movie, or even work.

blitzy
I will be attending a Memorial Service for Veterans in the morning to pay tribute to our troops in Iraq. I work evenings at a hospital so I will be at work till 11.30pm

samoanflowa82
Hell yeah, will definitely be staying home doing something fun with my family, like barbequeing and using our condos swimming pool :-]

I will be working on Memorial Day.
;-(

Ironically it is the high gas prices that will keep me very busy at work!
Many people "spend" their Memorial Day weekend by spending their money at my place of employment.
I sell cars, and we are VERY busy due to the high fuel prices these days.
Many people are trading in their not-so-fuel-efficient vehicles for fuel efficient vehicles!
The new Ford Focus is extremely efficient and at the dealership that i work at our sales are up by about 300% (vs last yearat this time)
We actually have been buying up all the pre-owned ones that we can get our hands on because we are running out of both the new & used ones.

Sad & ironic ...it is!

Yeah, I'm staying home. My family is gonna grill outside and I'll probably spend most of the day in the backyard listening to music and getting more of a tan or will watch a movie in my room. 'Just taking it easy before finals.

Uncle MythMan
Nothing. I don't drive anyway ... bad for the environment.

I plan to go to Arlington West.

Dad
Hey!

That is correct, Mike, I am staying home due to high gas price expense. I like to drive very far on special occasions to take my family out, but with gas going for almost $5 a gallon ( here in New York) I'll be staying home.

It used to cast me $40 a week for gas, but now it is casting me $80 a week. That's not very nice as far as I am concerned. And my wife pays way more than I do.

For Memorial Day, I might barbecue chicken and eat with my little family ( wife, daughter and I).

Also, we wanted to visit the Caribbean ( Island Jamaica), but because of gas price, the plane ticket is very high.

We also have a beach here in New York, but it is far away from home. I like to visit the beach a lot, but with gas price, I am not sure about it.

We pay this heavy car payments. We pay this heavy car insurance. And we have to be concerned about this extreme gas price, and it is expected to raise again soon.

Dad

I already had my long weekend - Victoria day - last weekend. It was sunny and 32 degrees. This weekend will be closer to 10 degrees with rain. We Canadians know how to time long weekends.

And I took Greyhound to visit family.

I'm going to spend Sunday night at my friend's house after I go to church with her. Then on Monday I'm going to her Aunt's house to swim and just hang out. It will be my third time to go there and my second time to swim there.

I'll only be going 15 min's at the most. I think it would have been nice to go to the beach or something, but not even worth thinking about when a 4 hr drive would cost way to much.

my Memorial weekend is FULL! my church is doing an Outback Steak house dinner to night (Friday) at 5:00 that i HAVE to be at. then tomarrow, since my family does Civil War re-enacting, we are going to Burton, Ohio. we will spend ALL day there and get home around 5 or 6 O'clock. then at seven of that same day my cousin and her family are coming up so the house HAS to get clean. finnally on Sunday, i have church. but not just any church service, it is being done in the same tent that the outback steak house dinner was held in. (it's in the side yard of the church.)

if that doesn't sound like a full Memorial weekend i don't know what will.

I am totally unaware about Memorial day. Perhaps there is a holiday on that day hence you talk about gas price. High gas prices need not keep home as there are several public transport are available. But one should pay special attention to what is required to be done on such day. As a duty you must do that.
