it depends on where you are coming from I guess?!? I grew up in Hawaii and went to college in Michigan and realised everything was half price! Then my first job was in NYC and I realised I was back in Hawaii prices (with respect to rent) and then bounced all over from Chicago to Seattle to Memphis to Los Angeles. It just depends. I am back home now in Hawaii and wouldnt trade it for the world. Its painful when they say local people arent nice. The mentality here is very casual and laid back and like anyone , anywhere, they dont like to conform to things. There is a huge diversity of ethnic cultures here and the food is awesome. Its geographically in the middle of the mainland the Asia and thats awesome if you enjoy travelling too. The pay wages are low here. and the cost of living is high. I bought a 2 bedroom condo in a gated community for just under $600,000 to give you an idea. Most places on the mainland, that gets you a front yard and a smile. The cost of paradise...

All my friends who have ever been stationed on Hawaii say it's very expensive and the locals aren't friendly (at least not on Oahu -- the locals on Kauai are much nicer).

Well it is as beautiful as they say and those island breezes are to die for. But they do have big bugs, including cockroaches, high cost of living, especially housing, gangs, and all the other ills of American society.

Great vacation spot--outlandishly expensive as a home!

I've heard "mixed" reviews depending on where you live. I've heard that it's very damp, and that the roaches are huge and everywhere ! I've also heard that bed bugs are way outta control there no matter how clean you are.. I've also heard that it's very expensive- that if you aren't wealthy the housing is so-so. I guess you'll just have to go and find out.. .

You have to be BLUE to live there. Much like you need to be RED to live in Texas. Ah, just kidding.

It's an expensive place to live. And, the locals seem not to appreciate the change white man, or japanese, have done to their island state. If you have kids, they may have a very difficult time getting along with the natives.

The weather is obviously, to die for.... fantastic. But, you also must realize that almost every vacation you take (like to see family) is going to cost you significantly as it'll require a lengthy flight.

Its hot, and if you order something off the internet, you have to pay extra for shipping and it will take longer.

It depends on your taste( I personally think it is overrated and too expensive, but you might be a young baller who can make it happen where ever you are. (poor folks hell and rich folks paradise)

I never lived in Hawaii, but I can tell you that you shouldn't go by how your trip was there. Living there is a whole different experience.

greenisnotpurple
it's a nice spot, but the locals aren't very nice

Well.. think exactly why you would want to go live so far to an Island? Then think wether you would find the same things you are looking for somewhere in the country, if not then make sure you do your research about why you would like to live there. So if you do move make sure you are not in complete shock the second you arrive there. I personally have not been there so all i can offer are these few words of advice.

yes it's a nice state, very warm throughout the year. Though personally I would say there's not that much if you live there long term, it's good for a vacation but if you're looking for a place with lots to do, try nyc or some other big cities

.
its awsome

Alot depends on WHY your living there. Retiring... not bad. It's Hawaii..WE ALL know it's expensive. NOW if your military.. whole nother ball o' wax. They are not fans of the military. Wasn't as pricey either cause your considered Ka'amaina and got MAJOR discounts. If your military.. I'd say go for a tour.. worth it in the long run. We enjoyed it more than we hated it. DON'T expect much outa the schools. If your a parent of young kids/ HS kids... god have mercy. HS...well.. yeah.... drop out rate is HIGH. If you have kids.. don't expect much education wise. And it's 80% uniforms.

I don't know, I've never lived or visited there...but i think it would be really neat to try it out. :)

I grew up in Hawaii, and it is a nice place to live in, but it's very expensive. I guess because everything is shipped and imported to hawaii, simple things cost a lot more than you would expect. But my parents still live there and love it, and obviously the weather is always beautiful...I would reccommend living on the leeward side (Pearl City) =). The best one thing about Hawaii is the aloha spirit that manifests itself everywhere...it's definitely what I miss the most.

it's freakin awesome... the locals r nice if ur not offensive... but over all a reall good place to live @

CV59StormVet
I was stationed there for four years.

1. It is EXTREMELY expensive. Cost of living is about double that of what is is in LA.

2. If you are used to being able to go places at the drop of a hat, about the only place you could do that is the big island of Hawaii. You can drive around the entire island of Oahu in less than 2 hours. The locals call it getting "rock fever".

3. The locals do NOT hate outsiders. There are places, however, (mostly on Oahu near Nanakuli, Waianae and Makaha) where you simply mind your own business if you go there. The locals in those areas have been known to be a bit aggressive.

All in all, I thought it was a pretty nice place to live (I lived in one of those areas I described above, by the way, ...Waianae) if you like sunshine, surf and a tropical paradise.

I know it is a wonderful place for a vacation. Depending on which island, I'm sure there are great qualities and disadvantages for each.

Nah its overrated, who wants to live in a constant tropical environment where you can go to the beach any time of the year? Not me!
