A New York minute is a very brief moment, significantly shorter than a real minute. The term refers to the common perception that New York City is very busy; much is happening at all hours of the day, people are often in a hurry and can be impatient. |

A "New York Minute" means faster than a normal 60 second minute. It simply implies that you want something fast. |

Well there is a news program on NY1 cable channel and they use that phrase to do a quick recap of all its news.
The term itself means a lot can happen, and it can and will.
Technically a New York Minute is still 60 seconds. |

I have never liked that phrase, never heard it until I ventured outside of NY. Same as anywhere else, 60 min. |

Literally, a minute is no different in New York than it is anywhere else. A "Baker's" Dozen is 13 as opposed to 12, making it a different kind of dozen, but a New York Minute is NOT a different kind of minute.
Figuratively, a "New York Minute" is a very short time. Johnny Carson once said that, and this may not be a 100% word-for-word quote, but..."it's the interval between a Manhattan traffic light turning green and the guy behind you honking his horn."
Many New York Minutes have passed while you were reading this :-) |
