I assume you're asking about the U.S.A. - There are 50 states in the U.S.A
But, there are also 31 states in Mexico which is also part of North America.
I am unaware of any other countries in N. or S. America that have States - though there could be some I am unaware of. |

There are 50 states. Alaska was number 49 and Hawaii number 50. That's where the TV show got its name, Hawaii 5-0. |

There are 50 and then there are territories like American Samoa, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, Wake Island, Midway Island, The Panama Canal Zone, etc. that are not States but are jurisdictions associated with the US. |

Technically there are 46 States and 4 that are called Commonwealths.
The 4 Commonwealths are
Kentucky
Massachusetts
Pennsylvania
Virgina
But for all intensive purposes they are all States just different meanings so there would be a total of 50. |
