So, just _what_ is being taught in geography these days? From what I can tell from my kid's homework (such as it is), today's "geography" is really just "socialism 101".
Geography is actually the study of the earth's oceans and land masses, i.e., name continents and be able to find them on a map,name the major oceans and find them on a map, the continental United States is bounded on the north by (fill in the blank), etc.
Sheesh. That's even a _history_ item. When were the last states added to the U.S.A. and what states were they?
How many stars on the flag?
How many stripes and what color?

Yeah sure, 50. But there is only ONE...it's Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I'm answering this question from. When else can you go from desert scenery to mountains wth all the pine forests and everything within TEN miles and it doesn't get SO hot in the summer it'll make your eyes melt (I'm talking about places like Tucson, AZ or the deserts of Southern CA).

Start off at the top of the West Mesa (called 9-mile hill) on the west side of Albuquerque at night and the lights of the city from about 900 feet up will take your breath away...it's a sight to behold. Yes, Phoenix, AZ has their South Mountain, but it's no fun at 117Âº or so in the summer.

Come from the east and you will have gone through a prairie, then a mountain pass fully equiped with all sorts of pine trees and mountain grasses. You then will more-or-less level out at 5000 feet (yes, we are indeed another "Mile High City"), though our valley is shaped kind of like a saucer, being the reminents of an extinct volcano.

In a very short span, we have fishing, boating, museums, a very nice aquarium and zoo, and gas prices aren't the highest in the world so it can make it somewhat affordable to do all of the things we have here. Our Native American culture is rich, as well. Each year you can go to the Gathering of Nations, a huge celebration that's being held April 26 to 28, 2007. (more about at gatheringofnations . com)

So, how many states? ONE! :-) The rest are...well...I've been to nearly all of 'em and haven't seen anything like this. They're just STATES. This is Heaven!
