I think my favorite answer here is "everyone says 50 but it's 48 if you don't count Puerto Rico and Hawaii."
Yeah.
And if you don't count, say, New Hampshire, it's 49.
Or, if you don't count New Hampshire, California, and Montana it's 47.
The correct answer is "50" --if anyone wants to argue that fact based on the existence of Washington DC, territories, or the use of the word "commonwealth," take a look at the official government info, such as http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/infousa/facts/states.htm and (linked to from the above page)
