Common sense says the schools will close.
Then again, the city school system doesn't always use common sense, and I've seen some very strange things over the years.
I specifically remember one storm a bunch of years back in which they closed the schools because the reports said there would be a massive snowstorm. The storm fizzled, but the schools were closed anyway. The next day, we got pounded with about 10 inches. Guess what?? School was open!!!
So, it's really anyone's guess. I wouldn't be too surprised either way.
EDIT: How about that? They actually closed! I really think that's because of the "second wave" of the storm. If it was just the first part, I think they really would have opened today. |

Been a teacher for 26 years. School will not close! We are glorified babysitters and the mayor wants us around! We should be able to stay home instead of risking our lives traveling especially when public transportation is not available. Kids should stay home and build a snowman and let us traveling teachers stay home and stay safe , |

Snow would virtually have to bury the buildings before the Board of Ed closes the schools.
They figure if the subways and buses are running-kids should be able to get to school. Not so in NJ and upstate. One snowflake and schools shut down pronto, because most kids are bused to schools and roads are extremely hazardous. In New York, the pipes underneath the sidewalks help melt the snow/ice.
I lived in Manhattan for years and schools never shut down-no matter how much snowfall, or inclement weather.
If schools close tomorrow......I'll take back every word I've said : )
Update: I'm taking back every word I said about schools staying open - they're closed. Shock of the Century! Enjoy your Snow Day!! :) |

Look, I'm an NYC public school teacher, and I haven't seen a snow day here since January 28, 2004. We've had some pretty heavy storms since then, but no full snow days. The reality is that city officials want students to stay in school for as many days as possible even in extreme weather conditions. It takes a lot for an NYC snow day to happen, and this was true even in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s as well. |

Well I go to a private school in NYC and it only closes when public schools close. We're definitely closed tomorrow, it's on the school website and they called home.
So it looks very likely, but you'll probably find out in the morning. That's how public schools usually do it. |

There is a good chance that it fill be closed. The last snow day I can remember was in 2004 when there was a blizzard...
Remember that snow storm that brought over 20 inches of snow (more or less)? My school was open that day, and the day after when ice was on a good majority of the floor.
Sometimes I wonder if this is what kids in Canada, Alaska, Greenland, have to deal with. |

NYC schools will not close and i'm glad they don't. Thousands of kids will not eat and/or spend the day being abused. School is the only place these children have an ounce of normality. A safe haven. Thousand of kids ONLY GET FOOD at school. |

Best way for any snowstorm school closing would be 1010wins.com they post updates every couple of minutes but you probably wont find out until its like 5 minutes before you have to leave to class which sucks. I myself have been raised in brooklyn public schools and I go to college at Brooklyn college sitting here when I'm supposed to have left to go to school. lol Unfortunately school is open for me and im still bsing here lol. But yea NYC public schools will be open through anything even the transit strike nyc schools were open so dont count on it EVER being closed in your LIFETIME. lol |

My mom lived in NYC when she was a kid, and she said for a snowday, there had to be a lot of snow on the ground for school to close because kids can either walk to school or use other transportation besides buses (subway, etc.).
There is a chance you might have school, however if you end up getting 14 inches, there might not be.
I live in a small town in Connecticut, where if there is like 1 inch of snow, they close schoool. So tommorow is like a definite snowday for us. But the only way kids can get to school is the buses or having parent drive; only a few kids walk. Buses are not save to drive in if there is any snow, so if the roads are messy and will stay messy past, about 9 or 10 am, then it's no school.
Have a fun snowday (hopefully) tommorow! |

they say if mass transit can not work, those are the only way for schools to be closed |

It's really unknown. The last snow day we had was back in 2004. But I really hope we'll have a snow day. It's going to have to snow A LOT in order to kick some sense into the chancellor and give us a snow day :D |

Unless you go to st. Francis prep or some other private school of that sort your not getting a day off. But boy do I wish it happens. NYC students are expected to be in school during all and any type of weather, we are not cared for. I know that in order for public school children to get a snow day hell would have to freeze over. |

I was shocked to see schools ARE closed... I spent my whole childhood just once hoping for a snow day, but trudge through many inches of snow as they never were closed. I no longer live in the city, but my daughter goes to Brooklyn College, and they have not reported in if they are closed, so I imagine they will be open. |

they keep schools open becuase they get more state aid for every day they stay open past the 180 day mark that schools must be open. Also, many kids in poor communities only get fed when they come to school so they keep that in mind. Myself, well my car slips all over the road, so they can take their state aid and the cafeteria ladies can come in. My *** is staying in bed. Im a teacher |

As a city teacher that lives almost an hour outside of the city, I hope we have off, but to be honest...I don't really think it's going to happen...time to get start planning for the week... |
