How weird is to pay a hotel room in cash?

My company is going to send me on a business trip. There is some inconvenience with the company's credit card so they will give me like a thousand dollars cash to pay for the entire week I am planning to stay at the Crown Plaza. Will the hotel staff become suspicious of me? How common is to pay hotel rooms in cash nowadays?

People pay for cash all of the time for hotel rooms these days. However, at most hotels it becomes a big production. You may need a deposit etc. And lets just say alot of people who pay cash are "watched" by a certain "group" if you know what i mean. Alot of people that pay cash where i work are dealers, pimps, prostitutes, etc. If you want to avoid alot of trouble as far as deposits and such, take one of your own credit cards to put down for incidentals. Or talk to your company and have them reimburse you if you pay on your credit card. Just some thoughts

They will take it but will probably require a credit card on file anyway.

There is no law that says you cannot do it, I have paid hotels in cash in the past. The problem may be that many hotels require a credit card to cover potential incidentals, they keep the number in file. Check in advance with the hotel to see how to go about this to avoid unpleasant last minute surprises. If you are not going to use hotel services, you may give your own credit card, just to keep the number in file, telling NOT to charge the room there.

Bon voyage!

Cheers,

I always pay cash, even though I reserve with my credit card. No sense in racking up interest if there's no need to. Any business prefers cash, it's no biggie! Have a good time by the way! Crown Plaza....NICE!

My company has a similar situation. I have found it increasingly difficult to pay for hotels with cash. In this regard the financial world has gone mad! In fact many hotels will not accept cash period. In a few cases like in NYC where nearly all hotels require a credit card, I have had to stay at a motel 6 in New Jersey because no matter how much $ you have no one else will rent you a room in that area. Seattle is a bit more relaxed, though you may need to stay at a less upscale place to use cash.

No, carrying $1,000 around courtesy of your "bosses" for "business" is not shady at all.

It's not weird at all. But the problem is that all the hotels are asking you for your credit card just in case you took a garbage can or something from the hotel. and they'll charge you.

?
Hotel won't care......They will just expect lots of cash tips, however. I'd be more concerned about you employers credit!

It's less common in the higher end hotels, but not unheard of. Make sure you have a valid photo ID as they will need a copy of that. You may have difficulties with amenities and room service, but those can be worked out. The staff will not become suspicious of you unless you behave strangely.

It's a lot more common than you think, cheating spouses will pay in cash to keep the charge off of their card! I have paid for hotels all around the world with cash, they just require you to give a credit card number up front for the room. There is nothing suspicious about paying in cash, relax and go enjoy yourself.

The desk is used to cash, it is not common, but yet it is frequent enough to be readily acceptable. Some brands, cash is seen more often than others, regardless of the brand though, cash is readily acceptable. HOWEVER...beware some hotels require a credit card, not many, my guess your hotel no...but you should check to be sure.

It is not too uncommon for a company to give an advance for an employee trip. For sheer liability reasons, they should allow an alternate method than cash (what if you get mugged because someone notice your bundle). The company may "expect" most employees to have credit card or bank accounts where they can deposit the advance and then travel with personal credit or debit cards. BUT...you can always safely easily send an "advance deposit" to the hotel, which is also frequently accepted by hotels. Just send a check in advance, most hotels accept checks ONLY when an advance deposit is given X days prior to arrival. Again, check hotel policy on advance deposit, but that is much safer than carrying cash!!

You are asking for trouble - carrying so much Cash.
Buy Traveller's checks or put the money in a Bank and use checks.

hawk_boy2003
i used to pay cash in my younger days when i'd take my woman over there

mac
It is not the payment of choice ANYWHERE anymore- people charge everything from cars to gum so it will be a little odd but the only hangup I see for you is that they will not give you any "credit" meaning you won't be able to have room service, use the phone, buy a movie without using a credit card at the front desk---you can give them your private one and tell them you will be paying in cash-- that way your card will be the "backup" and allow you to charge things to the room and when you check out- you pay cash.........something fishy is going on with your business by the way.......have a safe trip

i dont think its weird at all. especially if you explained the situation. you could always deposit the $ in your bank and pay w/ your credit card if youre that worried about it.

they might ask for a credit card just so that they can hold someone responsible if u do some thing like take the tv. or some thing like that so take ur card and save the money to pay for the bill. and save all the recipts.
