I hate to tell you this but detroit isnt safe at all...I live here! As a student will you be financially stable to afford an apartment downtown? Some people have full times jobs along with a side job and still cant afford an apartment downtown...so take that into consideration. The only thing good that I could probably say about living on jefferson would be that you would be in the hot spot near all the action and events that may go on...but thats about it. Farmington and bloomfield would be a pretty long commute back and fourth to wayne state. You may want to consider some of the downriver areas of metro detroit such as Lincoln park, southgate, taylor, wyandotte and allen park. From those areas you could be at wayne state within 15-20 mins.
Good luck! |

Detroit - Safe Area

Detroit isn't a totally safe place to live. (lived there 22 years) I would try to stay in any of the surrounding suburbs if possible. WEST Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Westland, Livonia, Farmington, Bloomfield, Canton... None of them are bad. They have some good deals on apartments in Westland. I lived there, too, for 4 years and never did anything happen. Good luck! |

every year 4th street and cass have kick but block parties.
4th street fair and dally in the alley.
farmington and bloomfield suck. |

You can live anywhere in Detroit, If you don't bother anyone they won't bother you, so pay no attention to these billies. The closer you are to downtown the more police presence you will see. If suburbs are what you are seeking, look in dearborn or dearborn heights. Farmington Hills is nice, but kind of far from Wayne State. East English Village or Rosedale park are nice Detroit Neighborhoods. Also the city of Southfield is Nice, just stay closer to Greenfield Rd. Oak park is cool too. Commuting will be tough till they finish the Lodge (m10) Good luck. |

If your looking for a safe place to live, stay away from living in Detroit. It's nice to visit for the day but not to live in. You should look for a place in Royal Oak, or Ferndale. They are subs of Detroit but very close, 20 min. at most. I live in Oakland county and visit Detroit but wouldnt live there. Southfield is so so.... never lived there but better then Detroit. |

Congrats on Grad school..
OK try St Clair shores, and roseville close to the expressways. Less expensive , nice down to earth neighborhoods . DO NOT LIVE DOWNTOWN DETROIT!
Farmington and Bloomfield are pricey. South-field is good also.
The city is not that safe,,If you drive your car, make sure you have the club and park in a secured fenced in Lot.( car breakins on the rise in the city )
Good Luck! |

Try Bloomfield Hills or Grosse Point. Both are very close to Detroit. |

my brother is also at school at wayne state university and with the way the highways and the lodge are torn up with construction you are ging to either have a long drivve due to backup on the expressway or live there. i cant think of the name of the apts where my brother lives but he is verry happy with them and they are right by library at wayne state right across the street.
the detroit area is not real safe but the campus is nice and your gonna have to make a choice to drive or live there and worry alittle bit. your not going to have much extra time for things since your in grad school. but also farmington and bloomfield are nice and safe areas you can also look for apts downriver like southgate lincoln park allen park wyandotte dearborn dearborn heights, there are plenty of apt located close to 75 where you can just hop on the expressway and be off to detroit just allow for traffic! good luck! |

As a student you should take advantage of student housing, but that aside your question is about being safe.
Hmm, suburbs are safer than the city, that is true; however, if I was to look for a safe, close-knit community near Wayne State I'd look at Hamtramck. Ham-town is a real funky little town located inside the city limits of Detroit. It is a very close-knit community that takes pride in its funky coolness. You'll be able to catch the bus to Wayne and a lot of students live there.
Check out Craig's list and look for roommates ... you'll find someplace to stay. Another thing you can try is to call one of the Catholic churches in Ham-town. Talk to the priest or the lady that answers the phone. There are folks who are willing to rent a room to a nice student. I did that while in college and it worked out very well. Cheap, clean and quiet.
Places on Jefferson can be quite nice and pricey. A carriage house might be availble on Indian Village or up Woodward in the Boston Edison neighborhood. A carriage house sits behind a mansion and is a large garage with an apartment for the chaufere. Hard to find, but cool.
North Park Tower in S-field was built in the '60's and is nice but not for students. Families maybe. Single or professional couples absolutely; but a student would not enjoy the atmosphere.
Bloomfield or Birmingham? Safe yes, you'll be spending 1500 to 2000 a month in rent and 1 to 2 hours a day in the car.
Farmington, same as above
Again, use the student housing services ... they have their finger on the pulse of safety.
Stay away from living too far away from the campus. You'll have the rest of your life to live in a suburb. Moreover, the cost of parking will bleed you dry. 10 bucks a day adds up to 200 bucks a month in money that would be better spent on beer.
Oh ... grad school... I thought you were 18 years old.
Check out the Park Shelton Apartments on Kirby. They just converted to condos and are very nice. You should be able to sub-let something, or buy it out right. |

Oh wow. Live on the Wayne State Campus. They have beautiful lofts and Condos near and on Campus and you're close to other ammenities such as entertainment, excellent health care, and good schools. (Cass Tech, DSA, etc.). |

I was born and raised in Detroit. The area around Wayne State is actually very safe. It looks like the inner city and could be seen as grimy, but it's actually a very diverse area with a lot of doctors, students and artsy people. Aside from that area, I would suggest maybe Ferndale which is only about twenty minutes from Wayne State. I lived there too. Also Royal Oak is great. There are a lot of really cool shops, bars, restaurants and boutiques there. Farmington and Bloomfield is expensive. Just move to Royal Oak or Ferndale. |

Southfield, Bloomfield and Farmington are of course further away, but you wont have to worry about waking up and your car being gone...as much.
Why would you want to move here anyway? Is there still time to pick another school? |

You're very smart to look at the suburbs. Those who say "I lived here my whole life and it's not bad" are blind. I've lived in the Detroit metro area, Chicago, NYC and St. Louis Mo. There is NO WAY I would let one of my kids live in the city of Detroit...NONE. It is a very dangerous city and there are no areas of the downtown area that I would recommend to my worst enemy...not even my evil mother-in-law.
From Wayne State, look at getting an apartment in Dearborn. It's just outside of the city and you can make the trek to Wayne State in under 20 minutes during rush hour. But it's the home of Ford Motors and is a very clean, safe city. It might be a little too Arabic for rednecks, but you can have a nice apartment for a reasonable rent and will be able to walk around at night with a decent nightlife and not be mugged or shot. Food's great, too.
If you head out to Southfield, Bloomfield or Farmington, you're going to get very frustrated by the road construction. It's a little too far out and your alternative routes will be very congested. |
