Boroughs are divisions of NY City. Each borough is considered part of NY city and each borough has a borough president. But there is only ONE mayor of NY City. Most of the time when ppl talk about NYC, they think of Manhattan, but the other boroughs are just as much a part of NYC as Manhattan is. BTW, Albany is the capital of the state of NY. |

Also, the five boroughs are all different COUNTIES, as well as boroughs. Manhattan is New York County, Bronx is Bronx County, Queens is Queens County, Brooklyn is Kings County, and Staten Island is Richmond County.
The Bronx is the only borough not on an island. Manhattan is an island, Staten Island is an island, and Queens and Brooklyn are part of Long Island.
ALBANY is the capital of New York. New York City is The Island at The Center of the World. (At least that's the name of the best book about NYC's origins!) |

Yes they are all part of NY city. Since the city is so large it has 5 different governing parts, but they all belong to the same city. |

You know i'm a new yorker and it confuses me sometimes. Some times when i hear people say "i live in NYC" they can mean the other 4 boroughs but sometimes the CITY means Manhattan alone. to me it's confusing. But ALWAYS when a person says "i'm going to the city" everyone knows they mean Manhattan. |

All five boroughs are a part of NYC, but most people consider Manhattan to be "the city" just for the fact that it's the borough with big business and the center of attention in mainstream entertainment. People think of places like Time Square, Madison Avenue, Park Avenue, 106th Street, 42 Street, and all of those famous places with beautiful architecture which is located in Manhattan.
I used to live in "The Bronx", that's how it's said so that's how it should be written. I love The Bronx it's a beautiful ghetto paradise, and the graffiti art, all those murals are amazing.
Can somebody answer my question please? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aiv9TGIlfJVpQRueLzrtIfrsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081101195151AACBppH |

I just have 1 comment. Someone just said or posted that NY City was or is the Capitol Of New York? Are they kidding? What about Albany? Or did you mean that NYC should be the capitol?
Anyway, at one time New York City was just Manhattan now the other boro's are all part and parcel of the City. Brooklyn & Queens used to be Long Island, Now They R Not. You see. Brooklyn,Queens Staten Island (Richmond) Bronx & Manhattan. all are New York City. |

They're all part of New York City, but they call Manhattan "the city" because it's so urbanized. |

I see your confusion. New York City is one of only two cities in the US which is subdivided even further. Those subdivisions are called boroughs. So all five boroughs are part of New York City.
The confusion started in 1898, when what was then New York merged with Brooklyn and around 100 different towns. The new city of New York covered five counties. So each county became a borough. |

New York City = New York, which consists of the five boroughs you mentioned. There is no such thing as "The City" like there is in London.
Hope that helps. Come and visit and find out for yourself :) |
