Make a point of visiting the USS Alabama docked in Mobile Bay. See's a well preserved WW2 battleship.
possible itinerary
FL to Mobile spend the nite
Tour the Alabama early AM Drive to San Antonio
Drive to Tucson
Drive to LA
I've always traveled with the chain motels national directories on board and if I need I place for the night I simply pull over and look it up.
Almost all the national motels have a copy of their directory on the premises.
I agree with another poster that West Texas can get a little strange which is why I'm suggesting that you do it in one non-stop piece.
Join AAA Plus It will cost you $92.00 a year and usually get you a 10-15% discount on hotels and other travel needs.
The real reason that you join them is that they will give you 4-100 mile tows a year.
In the big empty spaces of the West ,100 miles may get you to a repair shop.
Good luck |

I assume you are driving I-10.
Be careful in west Texas when you are driving close to Mexico, and dont pick up hitch hikers, or leave your hotel room at night.
There are a lot of great places along the way, just look for the signs... that really is the best way to see things. |

Try using Yahoo!Maps...see the link below. It also provides information on nearby hotels, motels, etc... Or call the State Trooper's Office in the state you are in to learn of over-night lodging accommodations enroute.
Have a safe journey! |

I made that drive about 8 months ago, from west palm. hotels are easy to find along the way, and if you stop late at night, they're willing to give you a good deal, cuz they know the room will make nothing if they dont rent it. my advice is to spend as much time as possible on the road, and leave the god forsaken hellhole that we've named Florida in your past |

If you have a Triple A office available in your area, you can go there and get books for every state you will be in and they will have all kinds of hotels and things to see and do in each city you will be going through. They also rate the hotels and give prices. Really is helpful. |

Depending on where in FL you're coming from, if you're going to stop in the Mobile, AL area, stop on the eastern side of the bay... not much to stop at until Lafayette, LA. The MS Gulf Coast is full of casinos that I'd prefer to avoid. Lafayette is ok... not the best, so if you're not stopping on the eastern side of Mobile, I'd recommend going all the way to Houston.
Best of luck on your trip! Also, Sears was running a special on "talking" GPSs for $250 or so... well worth the the investment for such a trip. |

AAA not only provides you with maps and exact directions but also with tour books, where you can read about all the serious and states you are passing by, places to see, discount coupons, hotels/motels, etc..
I have been traveling quite enough, for hotels/motels, I would say, stop wherever you feel like on the highway. Searching for a particular hotel in a certain city, will eat you up an our or so, more or less. Getting something right off the highway, saves you much time. Have a great trip! |

I drove from Florida to Nevada I got AAA and had them map my route it gives lots of information including hotels and places along the way. Also you get discounts when staying at hotels. And this is a great way to figure out the cost of your gas http://www.roadtripamerica.com/roadtripamerica_cfmfiles/calculator.cfm

I have don't this trip allot! I would recommend getting the maps from AAA. You are going to spend A LOT of time on I 10. AAA can also tell you the current road conditions which is helpful because fo detours and roadwork. Drive Safe! |
