Catch the statten island ferry, its free and you can get a good view of New York and the Statue of Liberty.
Go up the top of the Empire State building, or go up the Rockafella center (i think its called that, where ever NBC is) and you get an awesome view from there.
Times Square is exciting
Check out the WTC site
Central park |

There are many and the list above is pretty good, I would add a boat ride around manhatten. Its super touristy, but you will see a lot. Also go to Top of the Rock (30 Rockefeller).
ALSO, I found this great "secret" (no longer) rooftop bar near the UN. Great place for a foofy martini:
Top of the Tower at the Beekman Tower Hotel, 3 Mitchell Place at 49th Street and First Avenue; 212-980-4796; Old-school top-floor bar has two small outdoor areas.

It would be too hard for me to pick just one thing. Here's what I'd do if I'd never been there before. Look the list over and decide what sounds best to you. You'll have so much fun.
Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island
Times Square at night
Empire State Bldg - better than Top of Rock
Broadway Show
Twin Tower site -- and St Paul's Chapel across the street that has become a memorial to victims
Bike taxi ride through Central Park
China Town/Little Italy
Walk across Brooklyn Bridge and eat pizza at Grimaldi's on Brooklyn side
Ride the subway -- doesn't matter where you go, just ride it
Also take the Red Hop On/Off tour bus around town
Toy R Us is better than F.A.O. Schwarz (to my surprise)
Go down to the Today Show to wave to friends back home
South Street Seaport
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Columbus Circle
Have a slice Juniors Famous Cheesecake in Times Square - but skip the food -- it's only fair at best
Instead eat at Carmines Italian also in Times Square
Shop at Macy's & Bloomingdale's or wherever you like, but shop
Harbor cruise around Manhattan
Take the tour bus into Harlem & Brooklyn
If you have $200 per person take a helicopter ride over the city |

Visit my favorite museum in the world--on Manhattan Island, but at the far north: The Cloisters -- Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval collection. In a gorgeous setting (Fort Tryon Park).
Go see Central Park.
Times Square is also a must--eat at Ellen's Stardust Diner, where the wait staff all sing.
And closest to my heart--see the WTC Tribute Museum on Liberty Street and check out the new construction at the site.
Other than those, which are just a few suggestions, the best thing to do is to walk around and look at everything and all the people everywhere. There is more to do in NYC than one can do in a single lifetime. |
