I'm moving to Houston, TX. Is Katy or Sugarland Tx. better for a young family? Safety,Cost of living, etc.?

I will be working in the southeast part of Houston. From which city (Katy or Sugarland Tx.) would traffic be more manageable.

Sugarland is much better than Katy...take this from an outsider...

dang people from Katy act like it's heaven or something....

Dani
Both are nice, safe communities with good schools, plenty of shopping, etc. But, be prepared for a very long commute. The trip from Katy would be worse. Houston is far more affordable across the board than many other sections of the country. If you are working southeast, Sugarland would be your best bet.

Maverick
move just south of Houston...to Pearland.
They are building the second largest mall in the US on Hwy 288. =)
The east end of town is really BOOMING !

J H
bring two lunches with you ..

one for your regular lunch and the other to munch on the way home......traffic stinks

The Lemur
Katy is nice but not so upscale as Sugarland. Both areas are nice. Sugarland is generally much more expensive.

ed
Sugarland is about due South of Houston.
Katy is more due West, and would be North West from your work, SE.
Katy traffic is the pits right now. I10 is under construction for widening to 20 lanes.

Going South to Sugerland, passes through Missouri City, which may be less expensive.

If your work is in the SE, is it closer to I45 South, headed to Galveston? There are several small cities along the Gulf Frw'y, I45 S, and not too expensive. Clear Lake, near the Space Center, (on the water), Texas City, Dickenson, (both on water), Pearland, and several sub divisions along the way.

Search the internet for Houston maps and locate your work area.

Dieter
If those are the choices... Sugarland. The south beltway is relatively underused.

But ... find a community near where you work. You'll hate the drive otherwise. Depending on what you mean by southeast (that covers a lot of area!) Kingwood or Pearland would be good choices. (In character, Pearland is a lot like Katy.)

chocolatebee
both are god areas to raise families. they have good schools and there is plenty of shopping and entertainment in both areas. but if you are going to be working on the southeast side i would suggest pearland or the clear lake area. sugarland is more expensive than katy but the commute from both will be horrendous. i would recommend pearland bc although traffic is bad out there during rush hour as well, it will still be closer to your job. pearland is good suburban living. it offers the same comforts of katy, sugarland, clearlake, cypress areas. its generally as safe as anywhere else, the cost of living is fair, it has great schools, as well as entertainment and shopping.

Both are nice, but if you'll be working in SE Houston, I'd look for something closer. The commute from either Katy or Sugarland would be VERY long. You might want to consider Pearland or Clear Lake.

TVL
Both areas are great for families. The traffic is much worse to/from Katy if you have to travel I10. If you work on the southeast side of town, Sugarland may be better. But Pearland is east and I hear they are building a canal of sorts w/new malls/ect and revamping that whole area and very nice homes for pretty good deals.

I grew up in Katy. I would recommend the area, however make sure the school you will be zoned into is a nice one. We lived in a very prominent neighborhood that unfortunately was zoned into Mayde Creek high school. Do not let that happen to you! It's ghetto and violent!

Just be aware that the demographics in Houston change so-o-o-o fast it can make your head spin. If I were you, perhaps, I'd try something as a short term rental in Humble, Katy after evaluating how things would be getting back and forth on the freeway(s) and then ask around at work for recommendations. I do like Houston and consider it much more humane than DFW metroplex.

justhelping
I live in Sugar Land now. I would say if you are working SE I would look more along I45. Pearland or Clear Lake. In Sugar Land you are at the very least 45 min from work and Katy even longer. Traffic will be pretty bad. I grew up in Pearland and worked in Clear Lake for years. Both are very nice communities. Also Friendswood is supposedly one of the safest cities. Right next to Pearland.

Sugarland is upscale and was rated one of the best places to live in the US two years ago.

It has great shopping and schools and is only 40 miles from downtown and 30 miles from uptown.

You definately DON'T want to live in South east Houston...stay away from that area. Katy is West Houston and a really great family oriented area but there are areas in Sugarland, like First Colony that are VERY nice too. A Sugarland location would be a better commute if you work in Southeast Houston.

I live in Katy and LOVE it. But I also work in Katy and dont have to deal with the commute. NO WAY would I commute to SE Houston from Katy. NO WAY! Not even from Sugarland would that be a desirable commute.
If you move to Katy try and go South of I-10. North of I-10 has become a little run down.

Here's a link to a cost of living calculator that you can use to check the cost of living for different cities in Texas or other states: http://www.payscale.com/cost-of-living-calculator.aspx

Hope that helps,

Definitely BELLAIRE. I live in Houston and Bellaire, and the schools are great. HISD supports costs of school if you need help. Katy and Sugarland are much more expensive!!!!!!! I know the traffic can be bad sometimes, but if you know your way around town, you can find different routes to get to work. Just don't get caught in that 5:00 traffic! Good luck! Hope you make good choices!
