I'm moving to St. Louis and I am looking for a safe community to live in?

I will be moving to St. Louis in the next couple of months and I am looking for the best community to live in. I need to be near a great school system. I want my family to feel safe. Please help.

Parkway school district in West county is a good district as is Kirkwood and Webster Groves in south county. You also might consider where you are working to save yourself a difficult commute. I would avoid north county for safety and education reasons. The city of St. Louis has lost accreditation for their schools so unless you put your children in private school living there is not an option. Unless you are working north or in St. Charles I would avoid the bridge congestion and consider living on the St.Louis side of the river in either West or South County. West County is newer construction and can tend to be pricey. South county has some new construction but areas such as Webster and Kirkwood have some beautiful historic homes.

A lot of that depends on what you have to spend. i think west is the safest. Chesterfield, Ballwin, Ellisville, and Manchester, are all "west county" schools are great to. I've lived everywhere in St. louis and I feel very safe here, but I will say people are a little less friendly here. Most people are consumed with "keeping up with the joneses" South county is more friendly (Lindberg school district) I'm not sure how the school district is, but Fenton has nice spots with friendly people.
Kirkwood and webster would feel safe, but are very pricey (kirkwood has some less expensive places in bad neighborhoods) and I think people are really stuck up there. great schools though. Anywhere further in (brentwood, clayton, univercity city, richmond heights, maplewood, city or south city) you will have good spots and bad. It can vary by street you know?

Check out Chesterfield in west St. Louis county. It is so safe I once got a notice from the police warning me not to leave my garage door open at night.

Within the city, Loft Districts (of which there are a few), downtown apartment towers, Botanical, South City, Soulard, etc. You really only need to avoid North City and the state streets, and of course East. St. Louis, but that's a seperate city.

Outside the city the suburbs are.....nice, I guess, depending on what you're looking for. Generally the farther out you go the less there is to do. I've lived in Fenton and while there's some money out here, it's surrounded by various meth cities.

Without sounding like a smart-mouth I want to qualify your question: (As a former St. Louis cab driver) St.Louis city, county and surrounding area's - give or take a 30 to 45 minute drive- (naturally) depending where you start from, is about 800 sq miles !!!
Plus you have people driving 3-4 hours each way to/from work because they got such a deal on a retirement spot somewhere. Because of all the above we end up with sections of good and bad area's. Something else: lets take south city (about 20 minutes drive from downtown - without traffic). You have block by block a mixture of Black/White with/without kids, all mixed in with every nation under the sun. A house can run from $5,000-$80,000 thru HUD for example.

Most people use drive time to/from work as a guide (30 min average).

On top of that fact, I used to bring "High I.Q." black kid's out (appox 1:30-2:00 hours) each way) to 6 Flags area for the better schools.

Go to St. Louis. Rent a car at the airport and drive to the Extended Stay Hotel near "Hooters" 5 min from I-270 and Page. Drive around for 2 or 3 days the check different locations out. Talk to the locals. They will help you find just the right place.

P.S. "Rush-hour" starts around 4:30 A.M. in some parts of town.

P.S. #2 - One time it took me almost 1 hour to get from my parking place out on the street in downtown St. Louis due to traffic back-up.

P.S. #3 - I had a job out at the "airport" (nice area if you don't mind the noise). The employees would race from the timeclock to their cars to beat the traffic. 30 seconds was a big deal on the road.

St. Louis is 2nd in the Nation in: Airlines, Rail Roads, Trucks, and river traffic, It's the corner of a triangle that is the population center of the U.S.A. Lot's going on in that town of 3-4 million.

Brentwood. It doesn't get any better. Great schools, Fire Dept., EMS, very low crime.

I can help you i just moved from st louis a month ago i stay in freeport ny now. but anyway a great place to stay is in ballwin missouri. It has great schools out there and very nice homes with great police. It is near a great mall and 3 major highways. And the airport is only bout 20 minutes away. The best thing is that you are close enough to st louis city to have fun but far enough away from the hustle and bustle.Trust me you will love the cost of living there also. So when you have a chance look up Ballwin Missouri and see what you like. and glad to help you by the way can I get a ride back to st. louis cause the cost of living in New york is killing me lol

i would suggest clayton, kirkwood area. st. louis IS a safe city despite what people think, the only dangerous areas are some parts of north county and downtown, but really it's just like any other city and anywhere in the suburbs is great.
stl has alot of great private and public schools
other good areas for families are chesterfield, st charles (though a bit far out), and creve cour.
good luck! it's a great town!

You should feel fine on the east side, I would say Edwardsville,Il as a place to move your family to. They added a new middle school a few years ago and the town continues to gown. Recently A new area was added with shops like Michael's, Old Navy, Best Buy, Borders, Shoe Carinval. Edwardsville has one of the top school systems in the metro area, they just added 2-4 new schools for grades k-5 and the town continues to get bigger, the high school has to transport kids to another complex because theres not enough space and the sports at the high school are top tier with Edwardsville being successful in almost everything they do. Stay away from East St. Louis, Granite City, Collinisive, and Madison there are armpit towns on the East side.

Creve Coeur, Kirkwood, stay out of North County

Go West! The East side is less desirable.

Most of my family lives in St. Peter and St. Charles, now.

East St Louis, Kinloch,Brooklyn, Alorton,Centreville,Washington Park.
School District # 189.
All those others can only move West and keep running so long.

I know people who live in St. Peters and St. Charles, and I've been to both and they are safe areas.
