I'm planning a trip to Boston, can anyone give me some suggestions about what to do?

My friends and I are planning a trip to Boston in early November and I am looking for suggestion about what to do. We are in our early 20's; we would like to enjoy the historic aspect of the city, but also have some fun. Its juat going to be a weekend mini vacation to get away from work for a while. Any suggestions would be appericated.
Also I want to know if anyone has any suggesstions about hotels. Prices to stay in the city are expensive, so we were thinking about staying outside of the city and then driving in and hopping on one of those 'Duck' trolly bus things. That sound like it would work?
And one more thing. Is Salem a fun place to visit? We were thinking about stopping there on the way home. The only problem is that it will be a Sunday, and I wonder if everything will be closed.
Any suggestions will be appreicated!

I love Boston! =)
Make sure you get on the Duck Tours. They last like an hour to an hour and a half. They're amazing.
If you're a museum group go to the Science Musuem, and Duck Tours are launched from that location, among others.
Check Fanneuil Hall as well as Quincy Market. LOTS of eating, shopping, and fun.
If you like shopping a lot, go to Newberry Street. It is a huge (and let me emphasize the HUGE) street filled with stores. Keeps you there for hours.
If you like basketball you can visit the basketball center where the Celtics play.
My highest recommendations are for the Duck Tours, science museum (the Boston Museum of Science), as well as Quincy Market, which is right next to Faneuil Hall.
Also, the Blue Man Group is in Boston if you like that kind of thing.
A pretty reasonable place to stay is the John Hancock Center.
Oh, and Salem is amazing! Tons of museums and other things to do!
Have fun in Massachusetts!

Wow, how fun! If I went to Boston for a trip I would probably paint scenery. But if you arent much of a painter you can read a nice book or go shopping! I would go shopping to get some souvineirs to remember my trip. Hope you have fun!

Boston is amazing, check out all the art galleries. Or once you get there go into a hotel lobby and pick-up the brochures. Salem is really nice Oregon is a great place to visit because it is so green yet has lots of things to do. If you're going to be in oregon check out Crater Lake it's one of the 7 world wonders

Every historical site you can get to. Take advantage of Boston's history!!!

Steve
The USS Constitution is free to visit. There is also the Museum of Fine Arts and many old cemeteries. Paul Revere's house in the North end. You can also follow the Freedom Trail where you end up at many historical sites.

In Salem there is the House of Seven Gables which also has the home Nathaniel Hawthorne was born (Some of the guides swear the place is haunted)

Near by that are numerous old historical homes that are free to visit. The Maritine National Historical site and Peabody Essex Museum I always liked

It is not really a Witch city as a lot of people think, it is like any other city except on Halloween. If you do come go before or after Halloween as there is nonstop traffic and tourists from all over the world there on that one day.

Okay, I was Just there (last Sunday).I'm from the West Coast. My daughers and I were in New England for a week but Boston and Salem were the greatest. First yes, I would go to Salem, its only a short drive. In Boston we took a trolley tour, which wasn't a guided tour. They gave you a map and you could get off and on as you wanted (at their stops) We spent all day doing this and of course stopped at the Cheer's Bars. But the history is simply amazing. Have a great trip.

Everyone else has given great info, I just want to clear up a few things.

Duck tours (as mentioned) aren't on/off tours, nor are they running this time of year. There are trolley tours (Red Line and Old Towne Trolley are two good ones) that ARE running and do allow on/off stops, making these convenient. The only real difference is that the Duck tours can float in the harbor and the other ones are land-only.

Hotels in the city will be expensive, as will parking. Your best bet is to find a place in the suburbs (good ideas have been listed) and take the T. It's much cheaper and is actually pretty convenient. It'll get you everywhere you need to go, and you can buy day passes, or I think they still have 3-day passes. You can take it as many times as you please for one price, and if you're going a lot of places this is a nice feature.

Most everything in Salem will be open, but if you're only going to be there for a weekend I wouldn't spend the day there. You won't have much time, and there is a LOT to do in Boston. The Aquarium, the Museum of Science, the Skywalk at the Pru, Newbury Street, the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, the trolley... etc. These can all easily take up your whole weekend. You could do it on the way home and just check out a few things, but I wouldn't plan to spend a lot of time there.

I don't know how far out of town you're planning to stay, but the metro (called the "T") and bus system is quite good and you could even stay in Cambrige area (north west) and still be able to commute to downtown easily. I stayed in an area called West Roxbury with some friends, and they had other friends living in Newton area (both on the west side), and both zones are well connected (although you do have to allow 35-45 mins. to go from there to downtown).

As for the Duck cars, they aren't the kind of buses that take you all around the city and that you can hop on and off from.... they are organized tours that take you all around the city and into the river as well (they turn into a boat), they're like 1-2 hours long and depart from Prudential center. But I don't know if they're still working in November..... I was there by mid March and they weren't working yet, I was able to take the tour till early April and I'm not sure but I guess they stop in October. Anyhow, if you get the chance, take them, they're a bit touristy but fun. You can also get a guided tour along the Freedom Trail, they depart from the main park (Boston Public Garden) and are given by guides in disguise. Walk along the streets of Beacon Hill. You can also visit the USS Constitution ship. And of course go have some clam chowder and lobster, they're GOOD and cheap!!! Oh and if you happen to go nea the North End, there are some great italian restaurants and coffee shops in there, especially a place called Mike's Pastry where you can eat a Riccotta pie to die for, as well as mascarpone filled cannoli....... I guess that will give you plenty of things to do for the weekend, enjoy it!! Boston is lovely.......

Just a couple of things: I know Boston very well (though I am a Montréaler):

---Everything is open on Sunday. Aside from the 7 Gables House and witchy things Salem has a great museum (the Peabody) and a lovely historic district.

---DO NOT DRIVE in to the city. If you do not know it you will go crazy!!!! Find a hotel near one of the terminal T subway stations (or a hotel with shuttles to) or a T commuter rail station and take the trains into the city. (There is a very nice older hotel near downtown Salem, by the way, and trains run all day and most of the night). There are, however, some moderately priced hotels in the city, most of them rehabbed. The Buckminster at Kenmore Square, the Shawmut Inn at North Station, the Clarendon Inn in the South End, the 463 Beacon Guest House in the Back Bay among others. And there is both a Hampton Inn and a Holiday Inn Express in East Cambridge within walking distance of Lechmere T (Green Line subway) terminal (which itself is only a 10 minute walk to the beginnings of downtown Boston if you wish to save the subway fares) and also a short walk to the wonderful Portuguese restaurant district in East Cambridge. Boston and Cambridge also have many B&Bs - check the B&B registries.

Have a good trip. In my judgement Boston is the very best of all American big cities.

Next time come up here (to Montréal). We're even better!!

Visited Boston two weeks ago and had a great time.

I would recommend Old Town Trolley tours. The drivers are a hoot (especially Billy). Definitely go to Quincy Market, we had lunch at the King Fish Hall (Lobster roll to die for).

We stayed outside of Boston in Lowell and took the T, just remember that on Sunday's it only runs every two hours.

Salem was great and October is their BIG month. Almost everything is open and it can get really crowded.

Back to Boston, make sure you take time to see the North End (little Italy), if I were into urban living, I would definitely live there!

Pack a suitcase with clothes, that's a biggie.

Go watch a New England Patriots game.

Salem is fun to visit - but watch for which places you go to...some are really just tourist traps, others are really great to see.

Lots of stuff to do in Boston - the Duck tours are great...go to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market (they're in the same place), check out some of the great graveyard tours...Fenway Park...you can walk all over the place downtown - there are colour coded walking tours you can take, and the different coloured lines are marked right on the sidewalk to follow. There's usually something going on in Boston Common and the Public Gardens...Bunker Hill and the USS Constitution are also great.

So much more to do...punch Boston into your search engine...it'll come up with lots of stuff.

Tyler

Cleveland Steamer. The irony of traveling to Boston for a Cleveland steamer would almost be worth the dysentery.
