I've never been to Detroit? I heard it's awesome. Advise? Feedback?

Downtown Detroit is nice,theres lots going on all the time,casinos,festivals you name it its usually goin on down here,as with any city there are higher crime areas,but no more than any other major city so dont listen to all the haters here. the economy in Michigan is down right now so people think its a free pass to slam us but we will be back on top soon,come here and youll see

Downtown is not all that run down. Don't let everyone give you a bad impression. There are nice lofts and condo's with tight security and gated areas on Jefferson. GM is building new million dollar condos in the ren cen and don't forget the Riverfront. Those apartments are magnificient! It just seems like everybody has something bad to say. There are many nice places in downtown Detroit. Looks like you've been speaking to someone who really knows what they're talking about and really knows the Detroit area.

While I would not say that it is awsome, it is steadily trying to improve.

I have lived here for 30+ years(in the suburbs).

We do have a great music scene(try St. Andrews Hall for the newest music), Motown Museum and three great amphitheaters.

Your living situation will depend on whether you are renting or buying. I would think twice about buying a place in the city. Taxes are high, and there is very little as far as grocery/drug stores. You are destined to drive for a while to get to someplace decent to buy your everyday items.

The places to see and be seen are Royal Oak, Berkley, Rochester. There are lots of restaurants, pubs and nite clubs in these towns. Royal Oak has a music venue called...Royal Oak Music Theater. Current acts, up and comers, and old school bands regularly pass thru here for a one nite, small audience show.

We have a fantastic new terminal at our airport, and another being built. Travel in and out of the airport is pretty decent and easy.

Since we have no mass transit system to speak of, traffic is a drag. Avoid all major freeways during peak rush hour times. One of the major arteries in and out of the city(The Lodge Freeway aka the M-10 freeway) is pretty much completely closed for construction from the city out to the suburbs(I think just Southbound into the city.)

If you like cars, there is the Henry Ford Museum, Ford Co Rouge Truck Plant tour, The Automotive Hall of Fame in Auburn Hills on the grounds of Daimler-Chrysler HQ, and the North American International Auto Show in January. This is the show where more manufactureres introduce more new models than any other show in the world.

You cannot forget our sports teams. They are one of the shiny spots. The Tigers(baseball) are great againg. The Red Wings(hockey) have been fantastic for many years, and the Pistons(basketball) have been to the finals or semi-finals for the last 5 years straight. The Lions(American football) stink, but they sell out every game. 50000 people fill the stadium every Sunday to see a really bad product on the field. But it is still very fun! (dont ask me). Three of these teams are located downtown and sometimes, you will get a football, baseball, and hockey game, festival(Jazz Fest for ex.), concert or play all going on in the same day. Thousands of people in the city all at the same time, buying food and drink and souveniers. When this happens, it feels like there is nothing wrong here.

The city can be a dangerous place. Since our economy is not so good now, there appears to be more crime. Your best best is to live and play in the suburbs and go to the city occasionally. When you go, plan your route in and out so you dont get lost. There are a ton of one way streets that can end up dumping you in a not so nice neighborhood that frowns upon strangers. Keep your wits about you and you will be OK. If I get turned around down there at night, I do not come to a complete stop at stops signs and lights. I will slow down to make sure the intersection is clear, but I do not stop. I will risk a traffic ticket, but not my life.

Good luck, and have fun here. We are a great and proud city that needs to have a major turn around. And we need all those people that say the city is crap to lighten up. (i'll bet theyve never even been here!)

We have a city rich with history and heritage civic pride. We have had a tough economy recently, but I belive we are on the turn around.

Detroit is a great place to live. Here are the advantages.
A nice neighborhood that is actually in Detroit is in Indian Vilage. They have very big, nice houses. It is on Jefferson.

*Many clubs where you can have a good time
* lot's of good restaurants
*Tigers Stadium (baseball),Ford Field ( football),Palace of Auburn Hills(basketball)
*Chandler Park Aquatic Center ( very clean and affordable)
*Bell Isle( biggest park in Southeast Michigan,has a golf course, play area, tennis court, yacht club, beach, paddle boats and has picnic areas)
*Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village
*Detroit Science center( has new exhibit every 2 months
*People Movers go around Downtown every 16 seconds
*Pewabic Pottery(take a tour)
*Detroit Festival of the Arts every June ( very nice festival)
*Jazz Festival
*Dia(great art museum)
*Detroit Zoo(great place
*dETROIT sYMPHONY oRCHESTRA
*Auto show every January

Downtown Detroit is CrAzY!!!!! there are a bunch of one way streets. And some old looking buildings, lots of fountains and statues. There is always something to do with the choices of going to a play, the movies, maybe a band you like is in town, and lots of casinos and bars. And there is a motor rail or w/e it is called that goes all around the downtown area. it's like a small-ish train. it's really cool. I always like visiting there. i guess its the Huge city feel. or something. lol hope you like it there.

Detroit is practically bankrupt. They've had to cut back on police, schools, and just about everything.

Besides that, it does have a good downtown despite the crime. Just don't walk in secluded areas by yourself.

The Fox Theatre, Comerica Park, Joe Louis, Ford Field, HockeyTown Cafe. They're all great places to go.

Are you for real? Detroit is also crime city. It's not for the faint of heart. Trust me you don't want to be where the action is cause usually guns are drawn and innocent people die. It's sucks here and most everyone I know wants to move out of the area. Michigan is in a depression right now too. Well godo luck to you if this is for real....

Move to Ann Arbor. I am originally from the Detroit suburbs (I live in Chicago now) and Ann Arbor is the only place in that area I would consider moving back to. It is a nice (safe) area with great restaurants and a good live music scene. There is a great mix of people living there. The University of Michigan is spread throughout the city, which adds even more culture. They have some cool events too: The Ann Arbor Art Fair, The Naked Mile, and Hash Bash!

Ann Arbor isn't too far from Dearborn which is the birthplace of Ford and home to the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. If you really like cars that much then you should check it out.

There really isn't much action in the city unless you're going to a sporting event. And even then most people head home to the suburbs as soon as the game is over. For the Super Bowl last year, the mayors office actually put furniture inside abandoned buildings to make it look like they were occupied! That's how dead the city is - they have to fake having shops and restaurants.

As far as money in the city...the music industry moved to Los Angeles 40 years ago, so all Detroit really has left is a museum. The cars still have offices in the Detroit area, but most of the parts are made overseas, so it's a smaller operation than you think. I have a very large family, most of them work for General Motors...they are middle class like the rest of us. Only the top executives really make the big money, just like anywhere else.

I saw someone else suggested Royal Oak. That's a cool place too, and would be my second choice. I just think Ann Arbor has a more worldly atmosphere and it's a safe start until you become familiar with the Detroit area. Trust me...do not move blindly into the city proper!! Most people I know that live there would rather be somewhere else.

No you don't wanna live there. there is alot of crime, and It's very runned-down and dirty. and the auto industry isn't doing that well... I f I were you I would Move to a minor town around it.

Are you serious? You don't want to live downtown. It is very run down and dirty, and there is a lot of crime. You can move somewhere near Detroit and still get a lot of the culture that comes with living there. In truth, there is money here, but the auto industry isn't doing well, and the local economy is really hurting. If you want to move here, then by all means do so, but no place is a Utopia, especially downtown Detroit. I would suggest Royal Oak, Ferndale, or Berkley before Detroit, as they are all really close so you can visit the actual city easily without having to live in the slums!

Wow...you can't be serious? Detriot has the highest crime rate in the United States and the Economy is terrible.
Please just go visit before deciding it is Utopia!
I have family that is stuck living there because they can not sell their house, the housing market is so bad.
Downtown may be nice for some people...but you know it's bad when you see security gates, with barbed wire, around all the buildings.
Just because you like Eminem and Kid Rock and cars, doesn't mean you'll like Detroit. And remember...it's just the American cars in Detroit...so unless you LOVE Ford cars, you won't see much of anything else there...

If you are really considering a move to the United States of America, I would NOT suggest you to move to Detroit. Detroit is a city that is filled with crime, has a corrupt government that does not care about its citizens, and Detroit has one of the worst economies in the United States. The Auto Industry has took an impact because they cannot compete with Japanese Automakers who make better automobile. The three major Automobile Companies (Ford, General Motors, and Daimler Chrysler) have had to lay off many of their employees all over the State of Michigan and throughout the United States.

If you want to live in the United States, I would suggest you move to Los Angeles. Los Angeles has a great Music Scene, a city that has lots of money (because Hollywood Celebrities live there), and has so much to offer including museums, entertainment, and a strong mass transportation like in Europe. Detroit's public transportation is a bus system that is NEVER on time and does not operate very efficiently.

If you really want to live in the Midwestern United States, I would suggest you to consider Chicago. Chicago is a World Class City and the third largest city in the United States. It has plenty to offer from sports to nightclubs and has museums and great mass transportation.
