Well, depends on what you are interested in doing or seeing. This is a very big country. Are you more of a city person or an outdoors person? Are you visiting people for part of your visit, or are traveling alone most of your time? What time of year are you visiting (to take travel weather into account), and do you prefer any seasonal activities?
Since I don't have any specifics, here's what I propose. If you have the time, money, and energy to do so, I'd suggest driving across country. That way you get the most out what this country has to offer. Make sure you're going in the spring so you don't run into any major winter storms. You could aim to target several of the major cities that way (New York on the East Coast, Chicago or St. Louis in the Midwest, Denver in the Mountains, and LA or San Fransisco on the West Coast), while still getting some of the outdoors stuff (national parks in the middle, beaches on the coasts and what not) and really getting a feeling for how big the country is. If you don't have time or the desire to do that, I'd pick a few major cities across the country to visit for a few days each and maybe some time at the beach and/or the mountains. Maybe hit Washington, D.C. if you're into history and museums.
If you like warm weather, definitely spend some time at the beach. If you're coming here in the winter months, I'd stay in the Southeast or Southwest states for warmth, unless you happen to like skiing and winter sports. Then head to the mountains (Colorado and the Northwest in the West, Vermont in the East), but be prepared for travel delays if a storm hits. If you hate the heat, avoid the South in the summer time.
I think that if you are polite and courteous during your travels, you'll find most Americans very welcoming. Most Americans love the British, if for nothing else for that charming accent you all have. When you pick which areas you want to visit (especially the big cities), learn which areas to avoid crime-wise. Most areas here are still safe, but with increased population comes increased risk. If you show genuine interest in the people and places you visit, most people will open up to you. |

Come to the Midwest! Chicago is fabulous. Milwaukee is about an hour north of Chicago and is also a great place to visit. Springfield, IL is the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and the capitol of Illinois. Madison, WI, the capital of Wisconsin, is a posh city for someone from Britain.
Enjoy! |

NYC is alot of fun, and there are so many cultural venues to enjoy, but it can be quite confusing if you haven't been there. If you would like to visit NYC I would suggest doing some research before booking a hotel. Make sure it has good reviews, and a consierge to offer tips and possibly arrange transportation for you.
NYC is very easy to navigate, and you could walk to many places. (are you travelling by yourself?) Get as much info online before you come and you'll be fine.
DC is an excellent place to visit, as it is our nation's capital. However, it is more confusing than NYC and the traffic can be atrocious. If you go, stay in a hotal right in the capital district. In DC, all you have to do is get about 3 streets out of the "tourist" areas and you'll be in bad neighborhoods.
As a New Yorker, let me discourage you from visiting Niagara Falls. It is a lot of hype that will cost a lot of money for little return. Instead, travel the Finger Lakes are of NY. There are more than 100 wineries (and micro breweries too) in the Finger Lakes. Most of them are in the Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake districts. I don't know when you're coming of course, so if interested, check online to ensure the wineries will be open during the time of your visit. Most of them close for the winter.
Here is the NY Wineries website: http://www.uncorkny.com/winecountry/fingerlakes/index.asp They list vineyards by lake, and each one has their own page with contact info. My favorite area is Seneca Lake. At the southern end is a small town named Watkins Glen. Watkins Glen has a road racing course that hosts many different types of racing. This is their site: http://theglen.com/
To better answer this question, I'd need to know what your interests are. What hobbies do you have? There are a lot of areas of the country we could point you toward. Arizona has The Grand Canyon, Texas has Big Bend National Park (really, Texas has almost everything), and there is always Route 66... |

You should be fine, us Americans are actually good people, regardless of the empty headed leader who represents us to the rest of the world. Living in the northeastern part of the states, i will say New Englanders are a little more stuck up than other parts of the country, but for the most part , still very friendly. As for places to go, it depends what part of the states you go to, the Smithsonian museums are a great visit... NYC, Disney in Orlando, Florida....
Regardless of what you do or where you go, I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself, and I'm sure you will make a few new friends where ever you end up. Have fun. |

America has about 8 different regions besides Alaska.and Hawaii (Hawaii is expensive). There's New England (New Hampshire, Conneticut, Vermont, Maine) and the best time to go there is Sept.-Oct, fall months. There's Appalachia, which is mainly W.Virginia, Virginia,Tennessee and very country, not much to do except experience mountain climbing and hillbilly's which I do not recommend or you will have a screwed up impression of Americans. They speak very differently and are often hard to understand. There is the south, which is absolutely beautiful most of the time. Very green, and lots of flowered trees of almost every color. There is also spanish moss that hangs everywhere, which is quite unique and beautiful. The South is N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. In the south, the people speak differently, but not hard to understand and are very friendly. I love the south. I would recommend going to Buckhead, Georgia. It is right outside of Atlanta. You aren't too far from the Atlantic ocean or the Applachian mountains, the city of Atlanta, and could drive to Florida. The earth there is orangish red, really different, and really cool. You can also visit a plantation (slave times) which I recommend. South Carolina has Charleston which is historic, on the Atlantic, and has plantations too. Don't go to the south from May -August/September. It is very humid and hot. Florida is unlike any other state. It is tropical. Everybody goes there in the winter Nov-March. Tons of beaches. It's like an American Bahamas. Siesta Key Beach is one of the best beaches in the world, I lived there. Turquoise water and soft, white sand. Tampa Florida has Y-bor city which is the best nightlife strip. St. Petersburg has one of the two Salvador Dali museums in the world and some very long scary bridges. The Great Plains are boring flat land (Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa). The midwest is pretty lame too (Ohio, Indiana, Ilinois-except Chicago which is awesome!, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arkansas). Portland and Seattle in Oregon are cool cities, but very rainy. I've heard California is awesome by everyone. NYC is very expensive and very big. The Statue of Liberty is magnificent. Most people love NYC. If you smoke, bring your own cigarettes. They are $10.00 a pack there. Cigarettes are cheapest down south. Texas is cowboy country, and I've heard Austin is the best. Colorado is known for skiing and the Rocky Mountains, probably looks a lot like the Alps. New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada are mostly desert or desert like. Las Vegas is really cool to see. Everyone loves Vegas. It really depends on what you want to do, experience, see spend and how much time you have because the U.S. is pretty big and very diverse. But to get a taste of it all I would visit in late May. Go to NYC for a day, and drive from there, threw the Appalachians, to D.C., Altanta or Charleston, maybe Florida, there's beaches in California too, it's just not as warm as Florida. and drive across country or take a Greyhound. That way you can see the Great Plains, the Rocky's, the west, Vegas and on to California. Northern California has the redwood trees (tallest and widest in the world, I think they are the oldest too.) They have roads threw them. And when you pick a car to drive get a Honda Hybrid. They are the best in fuel consumption and best for the environment. Only go 5miles over the speed limits and 10 on highways. Get an international drivers license before you visit. Outside of big cities it is impossible to get around w/o a car! I hope you have a good time. People won't give you a hard time unless they're hicks (hillbilly's) or cops. But being a foreigner cops will probably be understanding with you. Just don't drink and drive and don't speed outside what I told you. I hope that helps. There is so much to do in the U.S. And states I know I left out. Washington, Idaho N&S Dakota and Montana. Montana doesn't have a speed limit because it is so desolate. I live outside Cleveland, Ohio. |

Brits are pretty popular with the US. As long as you don't go round calling people "Septics"or spout off about Iraq or Dubya you'll be fine.
Where to go - it's the size of Europe - so what do u like - its there by the bucket load. Outdoors - The Rockies/Yellowstone/Alaska.
Surfing - Southern California /Hawaii. See a Space Shuttle land/take off - what floats your boat???
I would give it some proper thought and get your travel plans sorted 'cos alot can be cheaper if you plan it in advance |

It depends on what your interests are, who you are traveling with (children, wife, friend, etc.) and how much time you have. There really is a lot to see. If you want to take in many different sites and experiences, I recommend either coastline. I think California may offer the most diversity. You can see beaches, mountains, deserts, lakes and rivers all within a few hours. You can visit some great cities like San Francisco, San Diego, Monterrey, and many more. There is theater, world class restaurants, golf, wine tasting and much more. You should really make the time to research and plan out what is important to see and experience.
Or you could just come over and wing it and still have a great time. I think you will find that most everyone will treat you kindly, and will welcome you with great hospitality. |

You will most probably have a great time, Contrary to popular thought on YA, Americans in general are Good honest hard working people. I lived in the states for over 10 years and loved it. Boston, NYC, Maine, New Hampshire are great , but if you want to party, South Florida, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and the keys must not be missed. The only time you will get any abuse is if you start it. Don't mess with any cops, they have no sense of humour at all. Just be careful in the big Cities, some areas are a bit rough. Down south people a very friendly and love us Brits. Have a nice time |

US is a big country with lots of places to visit. Depending on how much time you have the regular places to visit would be NYC, Washington DC, Las Vegas, Florida, LA., San Francisco, Grand Canyon. There are lots of other places to visit like the Rockies in Colorado, Texas, etc.
No you will not get abused in the US. |

Acutally the peolpe in America generally are fasinated by people from other counties. Please do not look at what our govermnet does as what the American peolple are like. I love Washington DC, NYC, Niagra Falls Orlando Florida, Vegas, San Antonio TX (but only for a weekend) If you repost with more details you will get better information Do you like theme parks museums, beaches, what time of year are you coming, do you like nature ( our National Parks are unbelivable)_ gambling, Lakes?(Lake George in NY in a greaaaaat vacation) how are your funds? NYC and other large urban area's can be expensive but if you ask the righ questions you can save alot of money by staying in the suburbs around the Cities and taking the trains into the city. Lighthouses are abundent along the East Coast and touning them is great fun, The Red wood forest is awe inspiring |

LoL, well to answer the second part of your question. No, unless you ask for it you will not recieve abuse. Despite what the internation media makes it look like, we are not a country that hates most international visitors.
Check out NYC, and washington DC if you get the chance. |

I travelled with my family to California for 3 weeks last year. I can highly recommend the place as a holiday destination. we hired a car and travelled from San francisco down the coast to LA, Orange County, San Diego, Palm Springs before ending up in Las Vegas. Places of interest we visited were: Golden Gate Bride, Alcatraz, Hollywood, Disneyland, Huntington Beach, Dana Point (whale watching), Sea World, Palm Springs cable car ride, Grand Canyon......the list is endless. |

I am a Brit who lives in the USA so NO! you won't get any abuse unless you ask for it,
So many places for you to see and it depends where you are flying to. I live in Arizona, so the Grand Canyon would be my recommendation, but I guess NYC would be the best place to start.
Have a great time over here |
|

Rebecca
|
Really depends on how long you have to travel over there. You could fly into los angeles or san fransisco and then hire a car and take the ocean route up/down to the other city. When you are in l.a you could visit vegas for a few nights and see the grand canyon. Then fly over to new york, do some sightseeing around there and maybe go up to the niagara falls for a few days, and boston and then fly home from new york.
Obviously if you have a few months you could travel by rail (get an amtrak pass) accross the country and stop off at a few places on the way.
Maybe you should buy a lonely planet guide to the usa, to give you more ideas on what to do, where to go, and lots of tips for getting around. |
