There's a lot of stuff to do around here, but it depends on where you're staying, what kind of stuff you're into, and how much money you want to spend.

Like everyone else said, the zoo is always a good option. But honestly, there are zoos everywhere and Detroit's isn't a fantastic one. It's in Royal Oak.

The Detroit Science Center has a really cool exhibit up right now. It's called "Our Body: The Universe Within" (or something like that). It has parts of real bodies (and a few whole ones) and lots of interesting things. There's one display with all of the blood vessels from one body isolated. Also things like hearts and lungs from smokers and non-smokers. It's really neat. I think it was 20 bucks and I was there about three hours. Don't go if your daughter is younger though, some of the things (like the whole bodies, complete with faces) could be disturbing.

You may want to check out some of the things downtown, like Greektown, Comerica Park (you can get really cheap Tigers tickets), and the little cafes and galleries.

If you like shopping and you're in the northern suburbs, Somerset Mall in Troy is big, nice, and fun. Or Great Lakes Crossing is a ginormous outlet mall farther north on 75 in Auburn Hills.

Good luck!

Go to this site. It will tell you about everything going on today. There is a calendar to show you what is going on at any day you choose. There are lots of inexpensive or free events going on now.

This site has some interesting idesa as well (though not all are happening this time of year).

The Henry Ford museum ... you can spend your day inside the museum or walking around the grounds ... both are cool ... Wright Brothers bike shop, Tom Edison's laboratory, Henry Ford's house, ... a bunch of vey cool things. Henry Ford bought the actual buildings and moved them board by board, brick by brick to Dearborn. He even brought the dirt that the building rest upon.

In the musuem it is a treasure trove of all things american. planes, trains and automobiles ... Kennedy's limo, Lincoln's chair ... more things than can be descibed.

In Detroit for one day? See America in one place.

It's very safe, not cheap but fair, and I've never heard of anyone being disappointed.

There is the African American Museum and the Detroit Science Center all within walking distance of one another. The Institute of Arts is going to be closing for remodeling, so I am not sure about that one.
There is the Detroit Historical Museum, The Zoo(in Royal Oak), there is Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills.
All of these are pretty moderately priced.

Detroit Institute of Arts, Science Center has a great Human Body exhibit, Greektown for food is always good, Greenfield Village in Dearborn, see a baseball game if there is one that day, eat at Hockeytown cafe. Try Michigan.org to find some other good things.

Greenfield Village like others have said is great and unique, but it's a little expensive, about $20/day. The Detroit Institute of Arts is a world class art museum and relatively cheap, so I'd suggest going there if you're visiting soon, but they'll be closing in June for the rest of the summer to finish a massive renovation. Depending on your daughter's age, she might also enjoy the Detroit Science Center and they have an Imax Dome theater there also.

If you're looking for free things to do, I'd suggest going to Ann Arbor (about a 45 minute drive from Detroit). Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan and the University has a great Natural History museum that kids usually love and they also have a wonderful art museum. Both have free admission although they do appreciate donations.

Are you staying in Detroit or one of the many suburbs of Detroit??? That could make a big difference! Also how old is your daughter? If she is young, than yes go to the zoo! If she is older, you can check out the casinos, Hard rock Cafe, etc. Good luck!!

Try the Detroit Zoo...which is technically in Royal Oak, but a much nicer area than Detroit. typical zoo expenses. If the weather were a bit warmer i would suggest a trip to the beach or something.

There are no sights to see in Detroit. Save your money and go to some place nicer.
