You should bring winter clothes, by that I mean long pants and layers of clothing. Bring comfortable shoes if you plan on walking around and include hats and gloves.
Have fun, I love nyc in the winter. |

Per about.com:
December Weather:
Average High: 44°F (7°C)
Average Low: 32°F (0°C)
Don't let the cold weather keep you from seeing all of New York City's great December sights.
What to Wear:
sweaters
a warm, windproof jacket
long pants
closed toe shoes, comfortable for walking and water-resistant, if possible
gloves or mittens, a hat and scarf to keep warm
Me talking again...
December can be perfectly comfortable in NY, but is less so if you happen to hit a heavy snowfall or a particular cold spell. Otherwise, really, it's fine! |

New York can be beautiful in the winter, but you really have to be comfortable to enjoy it.
Make sure that you wear layers, because the more you walk around, the warmer you will get. If you are sightseeing around town you will want to be able to take off layers and put them on with minimum effort. Besides chances are you will be on the subway at some point and they can get quite warm.
I suggest long johns, a turtle neck, a sweater or sweat shirt, a scarf, definitely warm gloves (splurge on these), boots that are high enough to deal with the huge piles of snow they plow into piles everywhere and a comfortable coat. Also something to cover your ears and head. Perhaps bring a backpack to put things in as the weather or your own body temp changes.
Make sure to stop at Rockefeller Center and go ice skating where a sweater, scarf and gloves will end up be sufficient.
Have fun!!! Take lots of pictures!!!
BTW -- New York has recently been rated the friendliest place to visit in the USA!!! |

I lived there, and I can tell you it is much colder than London and the air is more humid. You will need not only a good coat, but underclothing for layering. Wear only warm shoes which will cover the whole of your foot. Bring gloves and scarves. Luckly it is not as windy as here though, so once you are warmed up, you will be fine.
And don't forget to keep your head up watching people, there is always someone who will smile at you for no reason! |

I would just take normal clothes as the temperatures are pretty much the same as the UK. If you are going to NY for a shopping trip then dont take too much clothing as you will probablies fill your case with new things anyway on the way home
Enjoy your trip |
