I am going to San Diego in December and staying in the La Jolla area. Is this a good area?

How far is that from the airport? Should we rent a car or is there good taxi service? I'm from Boston, where everything is accesable by train or bus. THANKS!! =)

La Jolla is an EXCEPTIONALLY NICE AREA. For the cost of a cab to and from the airport you can rent a car for 3 or 4 days. The San Diego area has little in terms of mass transit, so a car rental makes even more sense. You'll save a bundle on cab fare.

La Jolla is gorgeous. There is plenty to do. Dining is wonderful, the cove is beautiful and the beaches are so nice! Especially in December. Uncrowded and peaceful. There is a beach where the seals come ashore right at the cove. kinda smells like seals, but great photo op. You can walk out on a spit (manmade kinda jetty into the ocean) where you can see them very well. tons of outdoor activities, like bikes, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, fishing, golf, sunbathing (yes...in December) surfing, etc. ALL IN LA JOLLA! Not to mention...EXCELLENT Shopping! Yes, you should rent a car. Taxi cabs are not common in San Diego at all! You can get one, don't get me wrong, but they are not common and are mostly downtown near the airport (about a 15 min drive to La Jolla). Rent a car. La Jolla is safe and mostly upscale. You wont have to worry at all about it not being a "good area". It ranks probably in the top 2 of the safest tourist areas in all of San Diego County. Enjoy your trip!

Hi!

The La Jolla (pronounced Hoya) area is quite safe, and quite expensive. Home to UCSD the campus is remarkable. You will need to rent a car - it´s California and public transportation is still in the dark ages. It´s about 30 minutes from the airport. The coastal drive there is beautiful. Also, close to Marine World too.
The weather can be quite cool, so you will need warm clothing. The coastal fog rolls in everyday but usually burns off by noon.
Some days are actually quite warm too. Recommend taking the ferry over to Coronodo Island and especially seeing the grand Coronodo Hotel and beach which has been rated the #1 best beach in America by the Travel Channel.

Hope this helps....Sandy

Hi,

I would suggest renting a car, La Jolla is a beautiful area but you will want to get to and from other areas that are worth going to also...

PS I am not an expert on the area though :)

I agree that renting a car is a good idea..but I work at a very nice hotel in LJ and we charge aprox. $25 a night to park in our parking garage. We offer complimentry car service, so the limo ride to and from the airport ($60) is more with it, then the car. check and see how much you are going to have to pay to park at your hotel.

For La Jolla you need a car. It's a very pretty area and a good choice. It is a bit isolated from the rest of downtown San Diego, so you'll need a car to get to:

-The Zoo
-Balboa Park (& museums) - which is next to Zoo
-Gaslamp district (restaurants and nightlife)
-Downtown coast area (Star of India, Midway Aircraft carrier, etc tours)
-Seaport Village (next to Downtown Coast area)

All the above (including the airport) are close-in to downtown. La Jolla is up the coast. Don't let that stop you from staying in La Jolla though. It's really nice. Be sure and walk plenty of the coastline and see the seal beach, tidepools, etc. Consider Kayaking around La Jolla also.

Just don't miss downtown.

La Jolla is THE BEST place to live in San Diego! It's pretty far from the airport- and there is hardly any public transportation- so rent a car! The area is expensive- so be prepared.

The upside is all the sophisticated people, gorgeous beaches (la jolla shores, la jolla cove), upscale boutiques, and amazing restaurants!

La Jolla is a nice and expensive community. It is where UCSD
( University of California San Diego ) is located. San Diego is a nice place. It has a nice weather. I advice that you rent a car. If you want to take a tour of the whole of San Diego, try using the trolley also. Remember to park your car in a safe place! Not all areas in San Diego is accessible to bus. You can probably rent a car near the airport. The area around Harbor has a nice view. I tried Mariott Hotel. It will take you a few minutes from the airport to La jolla.
I had stayed in San Diego for 2months. Visit Sea World, San Diego Zoo, The Legoland! You can go up to the last American exit. There is an outlet store there in San Isidro. The Oceanside is also nice. Coronado is also a nice place.
You can take the Amtrak going to LA, Orange County, Ventura County. That is if you have more time and hate driving and just want to relax.

taxi services arent that common in san diego, so i would suggest renting a car
