I am relocating to Cleveland,Ohio for my job. What are the nicest and safest suburbs to live? $ is not a prob |
My job is in Cleveland, OH but I would prefer to live in a suburb. I have done the city living thing already. I would like a nice, safe affluent community but in commutable distance to Cleveland. Any advice????

I no longer live in Ohio, but lived there for 22 years. I don't wanna take you too far from the city itself, but I was always a fan of the Twinsburg/Solon/Macedonia area. It's about 25-30 minutes from the city, but very well-developed with nice schools, plenty to do, and it's close to other nearby towns that aren't too bad. |

There are many suburbs to choose from in Greater Cleveland. You have to ask yourself these things first:
West side or East side? (anything on the South Side is not considered very prestigeous or desirable)
Older or Newer?
Lakefront or Countryside?
Public or Private Schools?
Generally speaking, the east side has more affluence and is considered more desirable. Look to the suburbs along the I-271 corridor in the Chagrin Highlands region. Those suburbs include Cleveland Heights (parts), Beachwood, Shaker Heights, Orange, Pepper Pike, Gates Mills, Hunting Valley, Chagrin Falls, Moreland Hills, Solon, Hudson and some small townships. These suburbs are near some of the best shopping in Cleveland at Beachwood Place, Legacy Village, Eton Collection. They are characterized as more East Coast (think Philidelphia/Boston suburbs), a larger Jewish population and older money. Living on the East Side and commuting to employment in University Circle (hub of employment) is fairly convenient, but commuting downtown from the East Side is not the best.
The nicer suburbs on the West Side are along the I-90 corridor outside the city on or near the lakefront. Those include Lakewood (parts), Rocky River, Bay Village, Westlake and Avon lake. These suburbs are near a very nice shopping in Rocky River and at Crocker Park in Westlake. They are characterized as more Midwest (think Chicago neighborhoods), larger Irish Catholic population, and newer money. Living on the West Side is great for commuting downtown, but not so much for commuting to University Circle.
Cleveland has rings of suburbs and a diverse housing stock. You'll find older brownstone mansions in Bratenahl, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, Rocky River and Lakewood in garden-style neighborhoods. A little bit newer communities are filled with mid-century contemporaries like Beachwood and Bay Village. And then you've got the most current suburbs building McMansions in Solon, Westlake and Avon Lake. But on the outer-ring you will find the likes of Gates Mills, Hunting Valley, Chagrin Falls, Woodmere, Orange and Pepper-Pike filled with distinguished country-estates (if you go by median-income, these places win).
Frankly, it honestly comes down to personal taste. However, I would put Rocky River on the top of my list. It is very suburban and located on the lake, but close enough to the city that it remains tasteful and fashionable. Homes are kept up very well and the public schools are very good - but private Catholic schools are nearby if so choose. Everything is located conveniently in Rocky River (unique shopping, dining, yacht clubs, country clubs), but it is also very easy to get downtown or head over to Crocker Park in Westlake. Shaker Heights would be my East Side choice - as the homes are beautiful and the community enjoys a legendary national status, but driving downtown is not nearly as convenient (although they do have light rail lines directly into downtown), crime is possibly an issue (although only a little more so than Rocky River), and taxes are higher. |

I would suggest on the west side, either Bay Village or Westlake. Both are quite safe and if you hop on I-90 you can get to Cleveland in about 20 minutes, possibly even faster.
With Bay Village you get some very beautiful homes and you are right near the lake. Westlake has alot of housing developments and Crocker Park, Trader Joe's, and tons of other shopping. |

I don't know much about the West side but I do know that Lakewood is nice. Westlkake is a long drive, that is where a lot of sports players live. As far as East side goes, University Hts. is pretty as is Shaker Hts. but some places of Shaker aren't that nice, ask your relator's which neighborhoods are alright. Cleveland Hts. is still nice, avoid areas that border East Cleveland. Same with Euclid, & Brentenal there are nice places but avoid any that border East Cleveland. I meantion these suburbs because they won't take you long to get to Cleveland.
If you don't mind driving some, then go out to Solon, Beachwood, Mayfield, Richmond Hts., Highland Hills. |

The west side is still the best side. Close to the airport and the best of the freeway system. Look in Westlake near the new Crocker Park. Everything is close by. |

YOU DO NOT WANT TO LIVE WEST SIDE
Beachwood is Grand...
Solon is great as well
University Heights
Shaker Heights has lots of antiques apartments and country clubs
the east side is the place to live the west is nothing but strip clubs and bars.... |

if you want that kind of atmosphere, you should move to rocky river. It does have a very small town feel. The people are very friendly and there are many new developements there, including a new outdoor mall shopping center (they tore down the old mall westgate). Schools are great, new community center, including rec center, ice rink, and public pool. Very nice. |

Westlake, Bay Village, Strongsville, North Royalton and Twinsburg are nice. Brunswick and Medina are nice but are a little further south so the commute might be too long.
By the way, the west side is not all strip clubs and bars. Stay away from Brook Park but there are many nice west side suburbs. |

I lived west in North Olmsted for a few years, it was nice and there is a big Mall there. I also lived way south in Hudson $$ a bit high, but small town feel, also nice. Also Garfield Heights on the south east side, not far from down town.
You don't want to live in the city of Cleveland itself, crime is too high. |

Suburban days, they last so long.
Check out Ashland County or Wayne County a little bit south. |

WELCOME TO CLEVELAND. i feel sorry for you. In my opinion Cleveland is the worst place on earth live besides Iraq. we have crap weather(only 60 or so days of sun a year and cold), no winning sports teams, a terrible economy, and growing violence and racial tentions.--have a nice stay! |
