It really depends on where you are going to work. Easy access is very important. If you are working in the west loop (sears tower area) you would be best of in the western suburbs (Lisle, Naperville). If the north side of downtown, then Evanston, Skokie and the north side would be best. If you're working in the suburbs, then of course you would want something nearby. If you have children, that puts a whole new spin on everything. Oak Park would be a good one in that case. A good realtor would be helpful in making your decisions. |

you need to give more info.
Tinley Park, Orland Park, Mokena, these are all good South suburbs.
Plainfield, Downers Grove, Darian are the good west suburbs.
Oak park, Lagrange, are old good burbs closer to the city.
Skokie, Lincolnwood, are north suburbs of chicago and nice too. |

wow... all these answers & they are (mostly) about greater chicagoland area. What about us towns down south?
Champaign - University of IL is there.
Springfield - Home of Jebediah Springfield museum (ok, it's the Abe Lincoln museum)
Both towns are big enough to have diversity, stores, restaurantes, but small enough to get around in. |

There are tons of little cities in the suburbs that are great. It depends on where you want to live / work. You might want to live in a City that is right on a train line to go downtown if you will work downtown. If you work downtown it might be best to live downtown. What kind of work do you do ? What kind of a company do you want to work for ? I would live close to my job. Do not get suckered into it's only a 1/2 hour drive. LOL ! Gas is going up, traffic is hell, construction is all year and jobs make you work long hours. You have to hustle in Chicago if you are going to make it. Live close to your job even if it means you get less value for housing. You'll get more value in other ways you can't measure by living close. |

skokie is nice...if it wasn't for me already living in downtown i would probably be living there. |

I know for sure

Well none of the above will work for you unless you are moving to the Chicago area.
The post says Illinois. Pretty big state.
May I suggest you repost the question with some more detail and/or do a search here. This location stuff gets discussed quite a bit. |

I think Oak Lawn is a great place to live. I lived there when I was littler. The school system was good but I don't know much about crime there. I would stay away from west chicago. It's not a great area to live in and the crime there is fairly high. ((Robberies, mostly.))
I think also Geneva, Aurora, and Chicago are good places to live. |

Start with where youre going to work. Do you want to work in Chicago and live the 'burbs?.. if you do, then you should know that traffic is getting horrible in the western 'burbs..and you dont wanna spend your life in traffic..so look for a western burb that has a Metra train stop, this would be the best way to get to and from work downtown.
Or forget the hustle and bustle and move somewhere like Freeport or Harvard, two nice towns in northern illinois. |

do NOT, never move to waukegan like someone said. it is dirty, poor, ghetto, horrible schools, and dangerous. believe me! i think libertyville is a nice area. about 20 minutes from chicago if you take the toll. its got great schools, a very friendly community, a lovely down town, and i just love it. best of luck! also, the south side of chicago is the same as waukegan, and dont move to highland park, lake forest, etc because they are super rich towns with super obnoxious spoiled brats. you seriously should not move to those rich areas. I'm sure your a nice person and dont deserve to be treated by those snobs. |

Well it all depends on your situation. Where are you working. Do you have kids, What kind of lifestyle do you have??? All those come into play because there are many options to choose from. So what I'll do is give you some good info on the different areas, Chicago of course and the suburbs (North, South, and West), there is no East, well Indiana is what we consider east. Okay.
Chicago itself has many many options. There are many ethnic areas in which you could live. Nice areas include downtown (really expensive), the south loop, bronzeville, Rogers Park, Lakeview, Beverly, Edgewood, Gold Coast(really really expensive), and many more. If you like the fast paced life of the city then any of these areas would be good for you.
Now to the suburbs. Starting with the North. The Northern/Northwest suburbs has many great towns and cities which to live in. Most are very affluent, but there are some great places that are very affordable. Cities I suggest include but are not limited to. . . Highland Park, Deerfield, Arlington Heights, Gurnee, Schaumburg, Niles, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Evanston, Skokie, Lincolnwood, Wilmette, Winnetka and many more.
Now the west. Chicago's western suburbs are among some of the fastest growing in the country so there are many great places here. With this booming population, there are some drawbacks however, which include TRAFFIC. Coming from the West suburbs traffic can get pretty bad. Towns and cities that are nice include. . . Naperville, Aurora, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Oakbrook, Burr Ridge, Western Springs, Berwyn, and many more.
Finally, the South/Southwest suburbs. These suburbs are also growing fast and there are many interstates that lead into the city from the south. Towns and cities include. . . Tinley Park, Orland Park, Joliet, Plainfield, New Lenox, Homewood, Flossmoor, Olympia Fields, Lynwood, Frankfort, Mokena, Crete and many more. All of these areas are within a 30 mile range from Chicago City Limits.
Well hoped this helped you some. |

I would suggest living in Naperville, Illinois. Naperville is the absolute best choice for a family or couple. This city has one of the highest rated school districts, if not one of the best in the entire country. Also, there are an abundance of beautiful single-family homes in different price ranges. In addition, Naperville has been highly rated as the one of the safest cities in this country. It's shopping district is fantastic, and you'll find nothing but incredible stores for your shopping pleasure. Why not treat yourself to a place of comfort, serenity, safety and excellence? You'll thank yourself in the end. It's a wise and terrific investment. Go with Naperville!!!
Here's a link where you can learn more of what Naperville has to offer. Best of Luck!!

LOL skokie is nice?
Its all about how much you have...the north shore of Chicago ( Winnetka, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and such) are all very expensive places to live. To get anything near here you spend at least a half a million, for a shack. However new trier hs is one of the top in the country. skokie feeds into niles, and well, i would never want to raise kids in skokie... |
