I lived there for 5 years and I am white. My dh is black and he lived there for 8. We never had any problems with the locals. When I took the bus to work in the morning I was the only white girl on it, the rest were Japanese or Filipino. I in fact made some great friends there who I still talk to occasionally. Our friends included Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Thai, Samoan, Hawaiian the list goes on from there. We were invited to homes, luaus, picnics, & weddings. Made friends who will last a lifetime. Because we respected them, their culture, beliefs, and ways.
Yes it was difficult getting a job because Hawaii has the lowest unemployment rate in the country. |

The ideas and opinions of Localgirl420 (above me) do not necessarily reflect the opinion of all of the people in Hawaii. Although I am not Hawaiian, I have lived in these islands for over 30 years, and my family has roots all the way back to the early 1900s. I fall into that "Asian" category.
A simple answer to your question is yes, there are people in Hawaii and Hawaiians who hate haoles (aka, white people). My opinion? Ignorance. These people place blame on any caucasion for being the reason that they lost their land hundreds of years ago. They blame the white person for being the reason that they don't have jobs. Then they go and justify their hatred using the excuse "because haoles are rude", ignoring the fact that there are rude Hawaiians and locals as well. Keep in mind though, that not ALL Hawaiians and locals hate white people, just a few of them. Saying that all Hawaiians harbored these feelings of resentment would be......well......ignorant.
Come to Hawaii, and enjoy our weather and laid back lifestyle. If you move in my neighborhood, I promise I won't hate you....as long as you don't play loud music late at night and don't let your dogs crap in my yard. |

I am White and have dated a couple of Native Hawaiians and as a result got to know them and their families quite well. Some of them do hate non-Hawaiians but, there are haters in every group. Many don't trust outsiders because of their long history of being treated badly by various outside groups including Americans. If you respect their culture, and act civil (not rude), and don't act like you are better than they are, most of them are friendly once you get to know them, |

In my visits to Hawaii, I have been called Haole in disdain several times by passers by.
I don't know why they don't like us. In the beginning we brought them disease and war. They ask us not to stack stones or litter at their sacred sites, we do it anyway. We've turned their islands into downtrodden tourist traps and have all but destroyed their culture. We're asked not to stand on the delicate reefs at Haunama Bay so instead, we just walk on them.
I can't imagine why Hawaiians don't like us. So when they call me Haole boy, I just nod . . . I understand. |

Yes there is some hatred by Hawaiians toward White people. I mainly due to the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. But there is other kinds of Racism also. |

Hawaii is just like any other place. There are some that don't like mainlanders and some that do.
My brother is married to a local and has always been treated as one. He is more accepted in Hawaii than he was here. On the other hand, even he complains about some of the tourists or temporary residents. He says they are very loud and doesn't let anyone rest. On top of that, they all seem to think themselves ABOVE the locals and expect to be treated as king or queen. |

No, it is not true entirely. Some white people (not all) are very rude and boisterous. They do not respect anyone (not even in their own race, yes, I am a caucasian, but I am not ignorant).
I have been to Honolulu six times, with my dh and our son.
We have made friends with people who live there.
The main thing is:
Treat people with respect! That is the #1 thing!! Don't go there and act like you own the place!!! Hawaii is a wonderful place and the people take care of their places.
If a person is rude (no matter what race or whatever they come from), they will be treated with disrespect.
Aloha is the #1 thing that is alive and doing fine! |

Ok here is the deal about that. I am Hawaiian and of course I've not like many white people including the ones that live back home in Hawai'i. Personally what I don't like is how RUDE they can be and how they expect to be treated like they are Hawaiian. Yes they reside and are residents of Hawai'i but that does not mean they have the blood. I apperciate tho the many that live their that support the Hawaiian movements. I personally have nothing against white being that I married a white man. But if you plan on moving there just be aware of your surroundings is all I have to say. Good Luck and be safe. |

Not true at all. A lot of hawaiians are well dark, because they are native.
But in Hawaii percentages in the following white races are:
German (5.8%)
Irish (4.4%)
English (4.3%)
Italian (1.8%)
French (1.5%)
American (1.4%)
Scottish (1.1%)
There is no hatred towards white people. |

It's not true!
Like all places, there are people that dislike some other race, religion, or belief system but for the most part, people in Hawaii tend to be "color" blind and treat each other with respect.
That being said however, local people do tend to not care for people who don't do things the local way (such as not picking up their trash when going to the beach, not taking off their slippers when entering someone's house, or showing up empty handed at a potluck get together). Unfortunately, the biggest offenders of "rules" of Hawaii tend to be haole (white) people so in turn, local people don't care for them.
So if you don't want to be one of the "stupid haoles", make sure you follow the local "rules" and you'll be fine.
Hope this helps....... |

I lived in Hawaii for two years. Hawaiians don't like white people, who they call haoles. Asians are in the majority in Hawaii, and just like in the rest of the USA, the majority can be depended upon to despise the minority. |

The majority of people now living in Hawaii are Japanese, and they love Americans (white or black). Native Hawaiians are not as numerous but are also very friendly. |
