A few things I would say are not to be missed:
Blue Man Group at the Astor Place Theatre, 434 Lafayette Street: http://www.blueman.com/ticketinfo/nyc/index.shtml
This is a great show that might appeal to the dance/elec music fan in you. A bunch of mute blue guys play instruments often made from plumbing materials and catch objects in their mouths. And more, of course. It's wildly entertaining.
Avenue Q at the Golden Theater, 252 W 45th St: http://www.avenueq.com/
A much more traditional Broadway music than Blue Man Group, except the cast is made up of puppets similar to your friends on Sesame Street singing songs like "It Sucks To Be Me."
Discount tickets may well be available for both of these shows; they've been around for a while.
Whitney Museum, 945 Madison Ave. (at 75th Street)
http://www.whitney.org
Pace/MacGill Gallery is currently exhibiting some photographs from Richard Avedon's private collection, including images by BrassaĂ¯, August Sander, Diane Arbus, Peter Hujar, Irving Penn, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Jacques-Henri Lartigue. 32 E. 57th St. http://www.pacemacgill.com/
Chelsea Market: A great place to catch a cheap breakfast or lunch, it has tons of great bakeries and food shops
http://www.chelseamarket.com/enter/concourse/info.html
Also, you should eat at least one meal at a restaurant that's participating in Restaurant Week. They serve three-course menus at outrageously low prices (under $25 for lunch), and some of the city's finest restaurants participate. My top choices among participating restaurants would be David Burke & Donatella, 66, Gotham Bar & Grill, JoJo and Mercer Kitchen.
JoJo is probably my favorite restaurant in the whole city. It's not as trendy as some other places, but they never let me down. The food and service are always impeccable, every single course. And it's a cute converted townhome on the Upper East Side.

The Empire State Center. This complex also house Tump Tower. Famous Central Park. Rockefeller Center with a huge ice skating rink. During Christmas, they lined it up with a lot of christmas trees. Fao and Schwartz. Unfortunately, that store with big,big toys is closed. Statue of Liberty. You have to go there by ferry., which is a nice ride. You could also use this ferry to go to Staten Island. Times Square where they drop the ball every New Year's Eve. Unfortunately this are surrrounded by seedy places, unsavory people, and stores. Be careful of purse snatchers. St.Patrick's Cathedral.
The museum of Natural Art and History. This alone would take you several hours to see. Gugenheiman Museum and the Metropolitan opera house. 34st with all the broadway theaters. Radio Music Hall which features live show with the rockettes. You don't want to miss that. Green Tabern and Grill a popular restaurant. The H yatt Regency hotel .with the see thru elevator. Lots of movies been shot here.
Chinatown second largest after San Francisco's. Water chestnuts, bagels, hot dogs, large pretzels, sold by street vendors. Saks Fifth Avenue. All the tall skyscrapers. I lived there for 10 yrs and loved the city. The only thing i didn't like is the heavy snow during the winter months. |

I cannot believe there are all these answers, but significant items missing.
Riding the Subway is an experience in itself. Use it during the day to get around, it is terrifically interesting, and efficient. Millions of NYers ride it every day, for good reason.
Soho and Greenwich Village are neighborhoods which absolutely must not be missed. Plenty of interesting stuff to photograph.
Even if you are not a jazz music fan, check out at least one or two of the jazz places in Greenwich Village. The crowd, the vibe, really interesting. Example: Village Vanguard 7th & w11th.
I personally thought the Statue of Liberty was really overrated. It takes up a big chunk of time, not worth it if you are there for only 3 days IMO.
Eat pizza at pretty much any hole in the wall place, great stuff. Eat a real New York bagel mid morning, you won't be hungry until late afternoon. Would not buy a pretzel or hot dog from a street vendor. |

I would reccomend seeing a show on/off Broadway. Go to Chinatown if you like fashion and knock-off designer purses, shoes, cologne, etc... You NEED to find a good bagel place and a hole-in the wall place for a slice of NY pizza. The smaller and dirtier looking, the better. MoMA was mentioned above and is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. My all-time favorite museum! You must ride the subway at least once, just say you had the experience. Coney Island is fun, but it is crowded and dirty. Yes, Ground Zero is eye-opening, but you can't get anywhere close to it and you can't really take pictures because there's fences up everywhere. The statue of Liberty is great but you will be in line for a few hours if you plan on going to the top, same with the Empire States Building. Personally, I have been to NY many a time due to family living there, and I don't bother with the tourist-y stuff... NY is best just walking around a people-watching, looking in store windows and eating a Bagel & Schmear in a street-side restaraunt... but that's me! Have a BLAST! It's not hard to in such a great city! A really good magazine to get before you go is called "Time Out New York City" it has all of the shows, street fairs and other entertainment that's happening that month. It's the best! |

Sorry that these examples don't have much to do with your interests, but Times Square, Ellis Island (Mostly for The Statue of Liberty) and the Empire State Building are must-sees. |

I highly recommend the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It is awesome. MoMA has just about every (original) piece of art, including photos, that has been reproduced to the nth degree. If you are on a budget go on Friday evening beginning at 4:00 p.m. admission is free. However, be prepared for huge crowds. If I remember correctly I think admission is $20.
http://www.moma.org/
Another great place to go is Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. You'll get some great photos there.
http://www.aviewoncities.com/nyc/washingtonsquare.htm
Times Square at night would be another great photo-op place. Tons of neon and of course tourists.
http://www.timessquare.com/
Another great place for photos and a NYC landmark CBGB. If you are going to be in NYC before September 30, 2006 make sure you stop by because it is closing for good. Bummer :(
http://www.cbgb.com/
Personally, I'd skip the trip to the 86th floor of the Empire State Bldg. You'll wait in lines for hours (not an exaggeration) and once you get up there you have to jockey for position with a billion people to get a decent shot. It's also pretty narrow. Of course it's easy for me to say this, I've done it twice, but I still think it's overrated.

Oh can't forget to make sure you check out the Hotel Chelsea (where Sid killed Nancy) with it's beautiful iron balconies.
http://www.hotelchelsea.com/
I thought of a few other places to see: St. Patrick's Cathedral and - I can't believe no one else mentioned this - the NY Public Library. They are both on Fifth Avenue and great for photos. In between the two is Rockefeller Center. While you're at the library make sure you go to Bryant Park, which is right behind, you can feed the squirrels.

The Statue of Liberty is more trouble than it's worth, frankly. Post 9/11 security is impossible.. you have to register for it days in advance, and there are still lines. Skip it.
You MUST see Ground Zero. It's really moving. But don't encourage the panhandlers there by buying WTC memorabilia.
I'd recommend that you take buses/subways and not even try to drive your car in Manhattan... it's expensive, time-consuming and difficult. Make a reservation with one of the tourist buses like the Gray Line... they have buses that tour all the most popular spots in Manhattan and that come by every ten or fifteen minutes, so you can spend all the time you want at different attractions and catch a bus whenever you feel like it.
You should definitely go to the Empire State Building, and to Little Italy, Chinatown, Soho and Battery Park. NBC Studios is really interesting. And you have to go shopping on Canal street... you can get anything there cheaply, and all the vendors will haggle with you. Just watch your wallet, Canal Street is brimming with pickpockets.
If you like music, you should go to the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe.. it's the hot spot for up and coming artists, underground sensations, that sort of thing... and you've go to see the Apollo Theater on 125th Street in Harlem.
The museum of Natural History is really cool, too. And if you want to BEST pizza in the world, go to Lombardi's on Spring Street in Little Italy. If you like soul food, try Amy Ruth's in Harlem.
Have a great time! |

The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.... just north of Central Park.... its been under construction for like 100 years. Breathtaking. Of course St. Patrick's Cathedral is also awe-inspiring.
There's a ton of museums... The Natural History Museum is my personal favorite, but the Guggenheim is also very cool. The Fricke gallery is also a good time. If you want to get some great photo ops you might consider one of the circle line boat trips around Manhattan. They're expensive (everything in NYC is) but there are some photos you can only get from the river, like the intrepid sea air and space museum, its an old converted WWII era aircraft carrier. |

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Times Square at night and a Broadway show.
Other points of Interest, Central Park & Pelham Bay Park (Bronx).
If I were you with YOUR interests I would spend an afternoon at the Met Museum, I'd spend an afternoon at Central or Bay Park (for great pics) and an afternoon at Greenwich Village (great little art studios and street art, etc.)
Then I'd spend one evening at Times Square (for great pics and lots of little clubs to go into), One evening at a Broadway Show, and one night maybe in Brooklyn where you will find a lot of great little jazz & blues clubs. Just check live music in NYC for the 3 days you are there...and spring for a CAB..don't be trying to drive yourself around at night in boros you are not familar with. Subways are fine for during the day - but get a cab at night if going far from your hotel. (besides no trip to NYC is complete without a cab ride...hang on!! lol)
I love NYC and highly recommend to all..but just watch your back while you're enjoying..it's a BIG city. |
