I went LA in April and have to admit it is nothing like what I thought it was going to be. I expected glamour everywhere and it definitely isn't like that. We still enjoyed our trip though. We stayed in Hollywood, so walk along Hollywood Boulevard, see the stars in the pavement, see Grauman's Theatre, Kodak Theatre, Hollywood and Highland. We also went Universal Studios which was good fun. Also went to Santa Monica Beach, Venice Beach and Malibu. There's the Getty Centre, Hollywood Bowl. We went on one of those trips to see the star's homes, cannot believe the money they paid for them - I wouldn't live there! Walked down Rodeo drive, lots of fancy cars outside, looked in a few shops, all very designer with no price tags and security guards scrutinisingyou trying to work out if you look like a person with a lot of cash! There's a lot of bars and clubs on Sunset Boulevard but you need a reservation or wads of cash to get into a lot of them. Don't know if you are hiring a car at all but we managed fine without one. We went everywhere on the buses and subway. $3 for an all day ticket, much easier than getting stuck in all that traffic.
LA is what you make it. It's very spread out so you need to plan what you want to do each day. We enjoyed it but a week was enough and now I've been there I wouldn't go back. |

We get so tired of knocking down these stereotypes. It's not downtown Baghdad, for crying out loud.
There's tons of stuff to do and see. You are only limited to how much time and money you have.
Yes, downtown can be a little claustrophobic, but a lot of people like it and it's going through a revitalization.
And you will find your accent works like an aphrodisiac on the locals. Use your powers wisely. |

I love LA. Every big city has crime and bad areas.
For museums I suggest: The Getty and the Getty Malibu, Museum of Latin American Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art. For kitsch there's even the Museum of Neon Art. Fresh Paint Art Advisors in Culver City is having a group show that runs until July 11. The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA has a show going on called WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution. More than 100 artists are represented.
For something you won't expect go see the Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple. It looks like the Forbidden City transported to LA.
Go hiking in Tahquitz Canyon to check out the waterfalls.
Go see the Huntington Gardens.
Rent a car and drive along Sunset Boulevard starting at the Pacific Ocean.
Visit Castle Greystone for a great view of LA.
Visit the Griffith Observatory to watch the sun set over the ocean.
Get a tan on Laguna Beach. Their Arts Festival is also going on right now.
Drive along Mullholland Drive starting at the 405. |

If you have the time take one of the all day bus tours. You will see a lot of what L.A. is about. Depending on your interests there are great things to see. La Brea Tar Pits, Catalina Island, the Queen Mary - and Russian Sub.
Lots more to see but it is a crowded noisy city. Oh wait you are from London so you are used to that. Lol. |

Try the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, north of LA in San Marino.

Great place to visit but I wouldnt live there again. Describe your hobbies and what you like to do and I'd be happy to help figure some things out. However with that being said I would head out to Orange County, Newport Beach + Hunnington Beach are awesome, the beach, sports, and babes what else do you need? |

LA is fantastic...if of course you like big cities with little to no public transportation, a horrible traffic problem, and smog so thick you could swim in it.
Kidding of course...sort of.
LA is great for shopping (Rodeo, Robertson, Melrose)
Partying (everywhere in Hollywood and West Hollywood)
and that's pretty much it.
As for galleries, definitely make sure you go to the Getty Museum. Unbelievable place. Closed on Mondays though (that bit me in the @$$ once).
Also, the LACMA (LA County Museum of Art) has some great stuff and is located on Miracle Mile, a nice stretch of town on Wilshire.
Enjoy! |

I live in LA (in the San Fernando Valley) and I still can't figure out why people want to come visit. There's basically nothing here... As a local who grew up here, I love it, but the real LA is not something you can see in a trip.
I don't know where you're staying... LA is a huge city. Rent a car if you want to do anything. Go to the beach and enjoy the sunshine. The Santa Monica Pier is nice. Make sure to visit the aquarium under the carousel.. most people don't realize it is there.
As for museums, you might enjoy a visit to LACMA or the Getty Center or the new Getty Center Villa. The La Brea Tar Pits is cool too. |

i really liked LA but if you don't mind a little bit of travel i personal enjoyed going to san francisco. it is definitely worth a trip there and if you do go consider going to yosemite national park another it is breath taking. also the grand canyon is spectacular, a life time experience. while you are in la take a vistor to the hollywood sign just so you can say you have seen it, through it isn't as amazing as you expect.
enjoy your trip. |

Honestly, I hate LA. People drive like maniacs (and I grew up in a major East Coast city), the air is practically unbreathable (again, see above), there is basically no public transportation and it's not very pretty. |
