I need a well traveled individual's opinion....? |
Which state would you recommend living in, out of: West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi or Florida? The state (or city if you have suggestions) would be family friendly with a good climate & job opportunities.
I will appreciate any opinions on these states! Thanks! |

Alabama, has lower property and insurance rates than Florida but they have State Income Tax. The decision their will be based upon if you are a home owner and your tax bracket. The school systems in Florida to exceed those in Alabama I have found. As far as for the rest of the states I do not know. One of the advantages for Lower Alabama versus Florida is Florida is a right to work state which basically means lower wages. The beaches in Lower Alabama, Gulf Shores & Orange Beach look pretty similair to Pensacola Beach. It just depends on your position. Both of these States are traditionally conservative both have a Republican Governor. I don't know these are just things that are important to me. If you are looking to move to Florida I would suggest Navarre Beach, great community. But please look at WatchDog.com for sexual predators before moving your children into any community. Good luck on finding a wonderful place to live.
To the person that stated that Florida has a horrible school system: My son is currently in the 4th grade he just graduated from the 3rd grade. Which is a wonderful promotion and is not guaranteed. In order to be promoted from certain grades in the State of Florida a child must successful pass the F-CAT. If the child fails the reading portion of the F-CAT they are automatically held back in certain grade levels, 3rd grade being one of them. My 4th grader reads at an 8th grade reading level. Anyway, the schools in Santa Rosa County are wonderful!!!!! |

North Carolina...if you desire a big city, there's Charlotte; the mountains, Cary or Asheville; the coast is nice; I lived in Greensboro (near Winston-Salem and 1hr away from Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham) which is a great place for a family. |

I'd live in South Carolina or maybe Louisville, Kentucky. Georgia and Virginia are cool. I'd never live in Alabama or Mississippi. I've never been to Florida.
If you choose North Carolina, stick with the eastern side that's closer to the Ocean, otherwise Asheville, NC is AMAZING.
You've given a pretty broad range of places. It's hard to just pick one. |

Either Virginia, North Carolina or South Carolina. Good job growth in those states and family friendly. Stay away from all the others. |

Im sure you can find good in any one of them. The only ones i can vouch for are Virginia and South Carolina. I lived in both for far longer then the others. Ive lived in 6 of the states you listed and Virginia is my favorite by far. I like the Fredericksburg area between DC and Richmond. |

I would never live in any of those states except perhaps Florida, but Florida has a horrible school system and is not family friendly. The rest of those states are filled with rednecks and igorant yokels.
I recommend moving to NY. |

I would suggest you to visit Lake Mary FL for more information, because it currently stand on rank 4 of the America's best place to live in, because it got high average family income, low income state tax, and low insurance, more percentage of jobs. |

I would have to go with North Carolina, and particularly the Raleigh-Durham area. This is based on the job opportunities, and the reasonable cost of real estate there. I don't much like the climate; in the summer, the area is a steam bath, but it can be delightful in the spring and fall. |

I have lived in Alabama and Mississippi and been through the other states you mentioned. Personally, I am not fond of the southern states- the accent, the heat, the continued racism and civil war bitterness...but I think that the larger coastal cities in the Carolina's or even Atlanta can be pleasant and not so offensive, with good growth and job opportunities.
I know I will try my best to stay as far north as possible...northern Kentucky, near Cincinnati, is beautiful and really growing--and that is far enough south for me! Good luck... |

I traveled to mississippi, georgia, tennessee, florida (out of the places on your list) of those, the only one I would even consider is tennessee, outside of nashville area. It is beautiful, big city is close (nashville), and you get a little bit of country b/c it is tennessee. I didnt notice any "rednecks" like some of the other answerers...I live in CA and yes, there were more "country folk" than I am used to but it was not the backwoods, missing teeth, inbred type you see in "deliverance" they were all very nice people. I went in august and the waether was warm (about 90, and a bit humid), but nice overall.
Mississippi & georgia were way too "backwoods" for my taste...
Florida is nothing but humid, hurricanes, and swamps...plus it is dirty...sooo much tourism takes its toll on florida, you fight crowds and they pay off isnt worth putting up with all that.
As for the school systems I am not sure, but that info should be easy to find on line |

Well I know that not all of those states have good climates, or not what I consider good climates any way. Its hot and humid or cold. I know Mississippi is the poorest state in the country, so I wouldn't consider that at all. If it was me, I would pick Florida out of all those you have mentioned. |
