the library coupled with the internet is a good choice for information: google earth, encyclopedias, travel guides from the library. you can find info about jobs, economy, yearly weather, best vacation spots...google earth is a good tool to find beach front hotels. online newspapers help with finding jobs, housing for sale or rent...hotels .com is a good thing if you want to know about hotels. |

Best state in the union. The people may be superficial, but at least they are happy. San Francisco is the most beautiful city in the country, but it has become "hard", not like it used to be. I was quoted in the NY Times in 1986 by saying of California "Moses had it wrong, this is the promised land". A lot has changed since then though. In fact, I eventually left the country to live in Israel. Enjoy. |

your question about california, you did not specify what you needed to know, it started out being populated by american indians, then maxi can/spanish ranchers, then americans took over and populated it big time during the gold rush era, then there was this real big earth quake and fire in san Fransisco that devastated it. usually the leader in a lot of environmental and political issues. |

The Bay Area (Northern California) is more politically liberal than other areas.
Northern California weather is cooler - with coastal areas staying cool even in the summer.
Southern California beaches have "beach weather."
California is one of the worlds largest economies.
Our sales tax rate is over 8%. There is no sales tax on labor or food (other than food in restaurants)
Property taxes are based initially on the selling price of the house, and then rise very slowly - so if prices are rising, new homeowners will pay more in taxes than owners of similar houses who bought at lower prices.
The word California comes from the Arabic term caliph.
Sierra Nevada (one of our mountain ranges) means "snow covered mountains." So, it's a mistake to say, "Sierra Nevada Mountains."
The Golden Gate is the opening between the bay and the ocean, and the bridge across it was given the same name.
When referring to freeways, in Northern California we say, "Highway 101" but in LA they say "The 101"
Numbered exits on freeways are new - and I don't know anyone who ever refers to the number when giving directions.
SF and LA styles are often a few years ahead of the rest of the country (except NY, of course) |

Geography: Absolutely beautiful state, desert in the south eastern portion on the boarder of Arizona and southern Nevada, scenic snow peaked mountains in the Sierra Nevada all year round. The cold and dirty Pacific Ocean to the West filled with large cities and suburbs along the coast (San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Diego.) And a dry, hot valley with the capitol: Sacramento right smack in the middle. Although California is the most populated state in the union once you drive out of the Sacramento area there are some of the widest open spaces you'll find in the country. Keep in mind however, whether your in an upscale, coastal suburb, a big coastal city or a small mountain town ALL of California is filled with well-off folks and housing princes are expensive EVERYWHERE.
Weather: California is typically described as having the best weather in the country. But keep in mind the sunny, warm weather stereotype agrees more with Southern California than the Bay Area and greater norther and mountain regions.
Culture: California is typically considered one of the most liberal states in the union, this is certainly true if you live on the Southern California or Bay Area coastlines, but if you go to the valley, Orange County or the Sierra Nevada range, the people you meet will be significantly more conservative. Also, keep in mind the big cities in California are much more laid back than the big cities you'll find on the east coast, so if you're from NYC or Boston or something like that and you crave a relaxed but exciting and diverse culture, you should give San Francisco, LA..... a try. |

It really depends on what part of California- San Francisco is usually pretty cold and foggy, except for the summer and winter, when it rains a lot. And the spring. The south is usually pretty warm, and I've never really been to the north. If you ask me a more specific question I could help you more... |

What I know is it's expensive to live there and the economy is hurting right now. My ex-hubby lives in Oregon and he said a lot of people from California are moving to Oregon and people from Oregon hate it.
There is always something going on in California so it's a fun place. The beaches I saw when I was there were so littered with trash that it was real sad but that was a long time ago so it could be better. Or worse. |
