Well i have lived in Hawaii since i was in 2nd grade and i am now 18. I lived in waikaloa Hawaii on the big island. I can tell you that i loved waikaloa. It was small but georgeous. Hawaii has great beaches. The living expences varies on where you live. Waikaloa was a good area because it is somewhat cheap if you get an apartment. The cost of food per month would be between $150 to $200 a month depending on what you buy. Fresh food is always more exspensive. Rent a month for an apartment varies between $300 to $500 a month including water. Electricity can be exspencive, so i suggest not to leave your lights on all the time if your not in the room. Gas is very exspensive compared to the main land. In Hawaii it is around $3.67 a gallon. Don't be scared though. i know you probably won't regret it.
I hope i helped. Good Luck |

I lived in Hawaii for three years with the Marine Corps. Living in Hawaii takes some getting used to. You can only drive around in a circle for so long before the view becomes boring. There are 0 changes of seasons. The weather is alway beautiful. The cost is out of this world. It is super expensive to live in Hawaii if you are not affiliated with the military. Twenty five years ago, I bought a three bedroom condo for $113,000. Those condos now go for $257,000, and they are the same condos, same building, everything. Good luck if you go. It is an absolutely beautiful place. |

The cost of living is pretty high there, so look for a job in Hawaii before you go I would say. |

It is expensive. My recommendation is that you continue to look for a job there and also a place to live. After you have that in line you can move. But if you go over there without either you money will burn faster and brighter then the nearest volcano. |

Living expenses are very high in Hawaii. Gasoline, food and rent/mortgage are very high, and alot of people end up homeless on the beaches of HI. That isn't to say you two can't make it but be prepared for the financial challenges.
Be sure to look online for real estate info. Most of the major newspapers have online editions which you can check to get an idea of how expensive housing is. I believe the Honolulu Star is one of the major newspapers. Check their online classifieds. Yes, less expensive rentals are available (because the owner didn't pay to advertise) but that will give you an idea of what's out there. |

Confused but alright

im from illinois, and just went to hawaii. gas wasnt much more than it is here...there are a lot of tourist places that you would need to stay the heck away from!! A gallon of milk at a place like that is almost ten dollars (naturally everything there is more expensive than the main land because ships have to import goods and things). My older brother lives (alone) not far from San Fransisco and tells me his rent (for an apartment) is over a grand a month, which is crazy around illlinois, but apparently not that uncommon in cali. I would say that if you could make it in cali, yo ucould probably make it in hawaii. just watch for hurricanes:) |

The cost of living in Hawaii is VERY expensive!, I was going to transfer there 2 years ago with my company and decided not to, I went out there for work and was shocked that a gallon of milk was $8.00. They had an apartment for rent, half the size of mine for twice the price. I don't want to discourage you, it's a BEAUTIFUL place! But it is a bit expensive, try it out for 6 months see how you like it, you'll never unless you try :) best of luck!! Aloha! |

My boyfriend used to live there and he said the cost of living is ridiculous because everything has to be flown in. That of course, raises the cost of things such as milk, eggs, etc. Going there without a job though could send you right back on a plane to Cali. Depending on your educational background, jobs are not overflowing. Good luck, but I would give it some serious consideration before just moving there. |

Hawaii is a little bit expensive when it comes to living there..Don't move without having a job...I worked for Radisson for eigth months and I learned that rent can climb as hight as 1500.00 for a one bedroom apt. Meat is very expensive that why they eat SPAM all the time...no burger in the island.unless you want to pay for it.
There are other places that you can move..such as Galveston or Florida keys...
Just do research and check on website about renting and jobs.

great job opportunities on the big island? like what? setting up an ICE(crystal meth) lab in Pahoha doesn't count!! if you go for it you may want to reconsider big island; on hilo side its mostly locals(some very weird and not alot of industry) on kona side you can get a job as a waiter/waitress in one of the many restaurants, or work the desk at a hotel maybe--most people i know who lived there did it at your age but crammed about 5 or 6 people into a house they rented and still paid thru the roof....but try it anyway 'cause evn if oit only lasts a year or two it would be an unforgettable experience(of course that could mean unforgettable 'cause it was so bad too) hope you and your BF are really close 'cause if it doesn't work you're a long way from home and there wont be many people like you(mainlander that is) on the Big Island |
