All of the previous answerers are right. I've never seen a snake here in town, maybe out in the country. Tree roaches and mosquitos are the worst you have to worry about.
If you are really worried about snakes and insects, move into a high rise!! |

Houston has mosquitos, which can be a problem if you live near a bayou. I recommend bug spray and/or a citronella candle.
We have big roaches called tree roaches, which can approach an inch in length. They live outdoors, are nocturnal, and are utterly harmless. Yes, they can fly short distances. That is usually to get away from you.
Houston has snakes, down around the bayou areas, mostly garter snake types. Occasionally you can see a copperhead or a rattlesnake.
I live one block from Buffalo Bayou, and I've never had a snake in my yard or my house. I don't even think about them. Tree roaches are a minor annoyance. I remember my youngest brother was afraid of them when we moved here 30 years ago, but got over that when he found out the didn't bite or attack people. Mosquitos are the same as everywhere else.
A highly sophisticated area of town? Could you augment that a bit? One man's sophistication is another's snobbery, or humor. You might be interested in a nice affluent area as opposed to a trendy area. I prefer affluence to trendy, because I like a safe neighborhood, like the Memorial area. |

Mosquitos are your worst problems in the houston area this time of yr. Snakes are not a problem, only when it floods do you ever really see one. Besides that, roaches are the most common problems and they are easier to take care of, just have the house/yard exterminated every other month and you won't have a problem. |

Well, we just moved to Houston from California and the worst we have all seen is fire ants, and mosquitos. There are June bugs everywhere at night, but they are friendly and eat nothing more than dead plant matter. Thats about it. ... We live near the edge of Houston near the Katy area. But I would say the worse thing here are the ants. Watch out for them! All you need are some pesticides for the grass to keep them at bay. I truly enjoy it here, the saying is true- "Texas- its like a whole other country." :) |

whats with snakes... you have this picture of the wild west and dirt in the middle of houston. Snakes are everywhere.
Imagine Houston like New York except the only difference is we dont have a winter and our humidity is 100%. We have mosquitos just like everyone else, fleas, ants, june bugs, may flies, and flies. My dear if you were to look real hard, you would find a snake in your own back yard. Snakes thrive in damp dark places and they dont really want to be around us anyway. So move to Houston and have fun. What you need to be more concerned with is Hurricane season..... thats a pain in the butt....and more dangerous. |

If you live in the city you'll have standard bug problems, mosquitos, roaches, ants, etc. You may see a garden snake. If you live out in the suburbs the bug problems are the same. I live in a new development that's still "in the country" and I see some freaky looking bugs from time to time. I've found a few baby copperheads in my yard, a very large copperhead on the road near the woods (the weather was weird, he was sunning himself, but froze that evening), a ginormous garter snake and a few King snakes. I'm honestly more afraid of hitting a deer or wild pig driving home at night than encountering a snake or bug. |

We actually don't have snakes crawling around in plain sight. You'll see them in the yard periodically, but they don't want to bother you if you aren't causing them a problem. Insects are another story. I hate the huge tree roaches around here. But it's possible to keep your house exterminated and keep them under control. They come in periodically and you find them dead on the floor in the morning. Yuck.......
But, that's just Houston
If you don't like critters, you might want to move to a bubble. And we don't have such a place around here. |

The most sophisticated areas of town are almost all in the inner loop area. Memorial, The Heights, River Oaks, West U, etc. You might see a garter snake once every twenty years or so. Roaches are not a problem if you keep your home clean. We have not exterminated in 10 years and we never have had any roaches, except for the occasional stray tree roach. (Ugly, but not dangerous). So come on down and welcome to Houston! |

It's only the far aints ya gotta be skerred of. All the snakes are frenly, rilly, as long as ya leave um room, they just go bout doin whatever snakes do. Mosquiters are big enuff you can see um fer a mall away, dont got no noseeums here. wear sum deer urn n they wont bother ye one iota. |

We really dont have a problem with snakes unless there are floods but mosquitoes are everywhere. There are a few suburbs in Houston that are very nice and affordable. Humble and Kingwood are very nice places to raise a family and its near the airport and near shopping malls. Don't worry about the insects too much. The only problem we really deal with are the mosquitoes and even then it's not too bad. |

Snakes and incests won't be a problem if you live in a nice part of town. I've lived in the Clear Lake area for 20yrs. [my whole life!] and I've seen a snake maybe twice but NEVER in my home or yard, always on the road. Roaches, as other have mentioned can get bad but a quick trip from the exterminator will *almost* wipe them out completely for a good length of time. In my area the city has trucks that come out and spray for mosquitos when it gets too humid and they really begin to present a problem.
but i'm going to agree with mizzhollywood houston is slow and boring... or at least it has GREAT potential to be. |

I have lived here all my life and have seen maybe 2 snakes the whole time. We do have mosquitoes and roaches , but like the above poster said just get exterminated every so often and you wont even see the roaches. I would not recommend living on north side for sophistication, maybe the Memorial area or northwest area. The north side has the airport so you hear planes all day long. |

If you would like a highly sophisticated area, then you'd want to move to the northside or possibly Katy. I grew up in Spring, which is north of Houston. Past Spring is The Woodlands, which is also a great place. I don't know what you heard about insects, but the only one's I ever had a problem with were mosquitos. Honestly, I knew nothing about insects until I moved to New Mexico for college. I'm being introduced to all kinds of insects I didn't know existed. But snakes, I guess you could say there are quite a few in ditches throughout the spring and summer. But that's just water moccasins around the ditches. Seriously, Houston's a great place to live. I recommend the Northside. A lot of friendly people and there are no problems with snakes and insects(except mosquitos). Your sources are crazy. |

Move to NYC. Houston is boring and slow paced. It does have snakes, because I've seen them. And there are plenty of insects. |

If you don't like snakes and other creepy crawlers,
Do NOT move to Houston. Stay where you currently live. |
