I'm 13 and I have lived in Cali my whole life. I love it so much. The earthquakes don't happen too often. Don't be scared, you can't live a life of fear. You won't regret moving here. =)

Earthquake problems? What earthquake problems? We haven't had a major quake here since 1994. There was a moderate earthquake a few months ago, but no damage was done to anything, nobody was hurt.

Sure, there's a risk, but it is very small. You take risks every day. You prepare yourself as best you can, and go about life as usual.

More people die here in traffic accidents every couple months thsn have ever died from earthquakes. You have to keep it in perspective.

That said. unemployment is very high here right now. There are no jobs at all for people with only high school. And if you are a college grad, line up a job before moving here.

gomanyes
lol, earthquakes are the last thing anyone here thinks about. Grow up.

California does have earthquakes, but most areas of the country have some sort of natural disasters, whether they're tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, blizzards or earthquakes. California's building codes take the fact that the state is susceptible to earthquakes.

copestir
Frankly, I would be more scared of unemployment than an earthquake. Especially if you have no skills and no education.

it's okay. i've lived in this area my whole life (i'm 14) and i have never felt an earthquake. unbelievable, huh? there was one in 1994, and my mom was pregnant with me, so i don't remember. other than that, there have been minor earthquakes, but for some reason i haven't felt any. so there's a chance of an earthquake, but it's low.

Oscar V
I recomend you to see this page, the earthquakes are maybe 1 each 2 weeks but of 1.1 in the scale of Richter.

After you've been in one earthquake, you'll find they're more of an inconvenience that something to be afraid of.
The best way to deal with it is to BE PREPARED!

I agree with "Copestir". You have more to worry about in California than earthquakes. This is an EXTREMELY expensive place to live. Unemployment is the highest in decades, and jobs are practically non existent. A young girl just out of school could not possibly make enough money (without doing something illegal) to survive. You would need at least two roommates just to afford rent. A car, and all the expenses of operating one, is a near necessity due to how far apart things are here.

If you truly want to live here, stay home and go to college. Get a degree, and a real, marketable job skill. Save up as much as you can. $10-15,000 is a REAL working estimate to get you established here, and that would only last for about 2 months. If possible try to get job offers (if you can) and ONLY then come. That will give you a better chance of making the move successfully. Remember that actually living here is nothing like you see portrayed on television programs.

MAD DOG
Well it's not like we get deadly earthquakes everyday.

I totally agree with AH. There are some kind of natural disasters risks almost anywhere. I live in CA. Moved here from Hawaii. Sure, it scares me that we could have a big quake, but in Hawaii, we have hurricanes and that was scary too.

ashleeydaniele
i love it here.
and i have lived here for 14 years and so far ive only been in three major earthquakes.

not to jinx us hopefully but they have all been small.

Your Friendly Jewish Accountant
You have a far better chance of being in an airplane crash, terrorist attack or winning the lottery than being hurt in an earthquake. Look up the statistics, we've had so many that our buildings have been made fool-proof.

fabulous
the truth is that there is earhquakes all over almost every day but we cant feel most of them. los angeles is a cool place to live! its nothing like they show in movies or videos its different!! A LOT TO SEE and do! where are you from?
you will like it the weather is awsome

As others have stated, every place has some sort of scary natural disaster. I think what bothers some people is that there is absolutely no warning of an earthquake; at least with a hurricane you have some time to prepare, physically and mentally.

And also, even though there can be structural damage in a quake, there is usually a very low injury/loss of life rate. In the last big one in San Francisco, the deaths came as a result of a collapse of a section of freeway (which has since been rebuilt with earthquake retrofits). Most new construction is earthquake-ready, and many buildings have retrofits required.

And just an observation re the freeway collapse: This is the kind of thing we're talking about when we discuss "infrastructure" and the need to take care of it.

Are you kidding me? Then don't move to Japan or South America. And the southern US has hurricanes and etc etc.
You sound like you are 12.
