I live in Massachusetts and they do it here too. I would say it happens everywhere. |

I've traveled to almost every state and have seen them all over. Some states seem to have regulations about what type of memorial and the location. Crosses seem more common in the south, but they are all over. |

I live in Oregon and there is crosses on the side of the road here also. Sometimes people plant flowers around it also. Some of the sites are very maintained with different flowers and decorations according to various holidays. Im glad you asked this because I always thought this was only done here. haha. |

Yes. This is done as a reverent gesture to those that are no longer counted among the living. It also serves as a reminder for us all to remain vigilant. |

This is farily comment thoughout the US, I think I have been to almost every state and seen it in most of them. The one thing that I have noticed is that while I have seen it in the past, it is much more common now. Someone told me that it was a Hispanic custom so I wonder if that has something to do with the increase in these that I have noticed over the last 10 years but I know that it isn't only Hispanics who do this. |

That practice started in Texas by Hispanics. They are building a small shrine to a relative or friend, now it is done by others as well. |

I put up crosses for my Daughter-in-law, her brother, and their 2 freinds, when a joy ride turned tragic. All 4 were killed instantly. Burnt beyond recognition. It is a reminder for young people about the dangers of joy riding, and a place I can talk to them when I want to. Their joy ride was called Bump Jumping, yep they jump right into a tree. |

Yes I think they are all over the United States. I know there are a lot of them in the midwest where I live. Some states may have regulations about how big they can be or how close to the road but I think you are allowed to do it everywhere. |
