Lots of white people live, work, and play in Harlem.

Don't believe the hype.

No, there are a lot of nice shops on 125th St.

?
The city in general has become a lot safer. During the day, there should be NO problem going around East Harlem...aka "El Barrio". If you HAVE to be around the area at night, stay on the major main streets (1st, 2nd, 3rd Avenues...I don't necessarily recommend Lexington Avenue, Park Avenue or Madison Avenue north of Mt. Sinai Hospital - 103rd Street) and along E. 116th Street.

Though at all times, keep that "street sense" on you by knowing your surroundings and being on the extra alert regarding people.

Just wear a Red Sox cap and a Yankees sucks tee shirt and act like Manny Ramirez and you'll never remember a thing.

you shouldnt be afraid of going anywhere. thatys stupid. i live in detroit and its like pussy cats walking across the streets and stuff.. its all in your head

Why are you going there?
No, it's okay. Just don't wear really nice expensive clothes, keep your purse closed, and don't walk alone at night.

I live in NY and it doesn't matter what COLOR you are, if you mind your own business and don't bother anyone you should be fine. There are bad people of every color and it isn't the color of your skin that matters.
You talk as if East Harlem is the slums. It may not be the richest area but there is no reason to pass judgement on it just because of what you may have heard.
I am white by the way if that matters at all. And I have a lot of friends of all colors.
Just relax.

it's not neciceraly dangerouse but haveing a knife would help [the blade must be smaller than your palm or it's ilegal to cary or you can get a stun gun, or pepper spray [either will do]

sagewithin
Don't go out past 4:30 pm because it gets dark at that time... and a white girl will not fit in too well, unless you don't mind drawing attention to yourself... but believe me, it's not the type of attention you would want.

It all depends on where you go, and that's the case all over the city, yes, there's even shady parts in Soho, Tribeca, etc. I would recommend that you talk to whoever you're visiting and ask them what the safest, well-lit route is.

Just keep your guard up (in other words, don't use phone/iPod) and act like you know what you're doing.

...sure is....black or white, its a high crime area....
...just as any city in the country, good and bad parts...

LOL thats ridiculous.

bebop_music
its not the danger. its your fear. where ever you go, you should project the look of 'i belong here and so i am here'. people all over the world recognize that look. if you have the 'i am a white sitting duck' look on your face, you will be a white sitting duck. get to the conclusion that whatever happens, will be because of your look. use your common sense and dont invite a.ssholes to steal your hope diamond. leave it home

Don't be silly. I used to live in Detroit and I always felt safe.

I don't think you should be afraid.

Harlem is getting much better recently due to gentrification. It's turning from squalid to yuppie ville right before our eyes. Honestly, you have nothing to worry about.
