Not ALL Americans do that.
Just the ignorant ones you seem to have had the pleasure of coming into contact with. |

They're probably trying to avoid conversation about their government's diplomatic relations or mistreatment due to assumptions based on other countries inhabitant's generalizations. A good example of generalization is your question. I'm sure there are some people, like myself, who will gladly say that I'm American. However, I am not a Jesus freak, war monger, or generally hardheaded like the "typical american". I didn't vote for Bush either. He was not my president. I seceded from the union once he was elected. |

Maybe so other people won't be as jealous of them. People around the world are jealous of Americans. I mean who is jealous of any Canuck. Who really wants to be from Canada? |

Prices.
Americans have been getting overcharged overseas for decades. It's when money is tight that we pull the old Canadian card on them, then the price goes down.
We are proud of our country, but in a lot of countries, if they think you're Canadian, you get a better deal. The old pocketbook is king overseas. Gotta make it last as long as possible. |

So they can say "aboot" instead of "about", cause it's so much fun. |

I love this! I have seen this too, i was overseas and i seen a guy with a Canada pin on his shirt. I said "Oh you are Canadian? I am too!" and he said "actually im from the US."
They do it because the ones who actually understand how other countries feel about them and who travel to other places don't want to be ridiculed or discriminated. Dont hate me for saying this but many countries prefer Canadians over Americans.
So when Americans say "Canada is just little America" well actually we are much different and we pride ourselves on being different. |

I am American and I would never tell anyone that I wasn't American. I have plenty of British and Austrailian and French friends and they know I'm American and they like me for me. |

I don't blame them. I'm am a citizen of the US and am proud to say that I don't want to admit I live here. This county has no respect for itself anymore and no body else respects it either. For good reason if you ask me. |
|

No soup for you.

We don't. America isn't hated by the majority, only by the US media and a minority in some countries. We are the envy of most countries for everything we have. I've worked in China, Thailand, Ireland, Turkey, France, Italy, Philippines and Belgium and as a general rule the everyday worker is caught up in their life and have no interest or need to hate anyone. |

WOW. You've actually asked every oversea American where they were from and they said they were Canadian??? Then how would you know if they were really American???
Get the point? |

I never said I wasn't American while overseas.
I spent 5 years in the Army and went to 13 different countries.
Many of those countries would kiss the very ground I walked on because I was an American.
If anyone ever gave me a ration of **** because I was American.....it wouldn't work out well for them. |

Americans are proud of their country; however, when traveling abroad, Americans are strongly disliked. Rather than be treated differently because of national origin, Americans claim to be their northern friends, the Canadians.
P.S.
Any person born in North or South AMERICA is AMERICAN; just like anyone born in Europe is European. |

Because they aren't THAT proud. In many places overseas, Americans aren't that popular, are they? So perhaps they think it easier to pretend not to be American. I'd never do it myself, though. |

We don't. Maybe some do, but no one I know does that. If someone has done so, they likely were trying to avoid bigotry as they were on vacation and did not volunteer to become a target for anyone. It is not customary in the US to harass tourists; Americans are generally friendly and gracious to visitors. We consider it rude to verbally attack perfect strangers over the politics of their homeland.
If a person decides that they hate an entire nationality based on biased information and stereotypes, I have only pity for them. It must be a small, dull world when one is so closed minded. If someone treats me shabbily or rudely due to the land mass I was born on when I am a visitor in their country, then they would seem to be very weak minded and bigoted. At the very least, they have poor manners.
Generally, an intelligent person can differentiate between a nations people and the actions of a nations government. Treating someone poorly due to the actions of their government leads me to question that persons IQ and grasp of logic.
Being bigoted against Americans simply because they are Americans makes one a bigot. An irrational hatred of a whole nationality = bigotry. That isn't really something to be proud of, especially considering the fact that most European countries, with their colonies, genocide, slavery, unending wars for property and religious intolerance have much darker and bloodier pasts than the US does. To hate Americans for the US government doing in a lesser capacity the exact same things that your own nations have done makes European American haters hypocrites.
Americans are just as proud of their country or patriotic (two different things by the way) as any other nationality. To fault Americans alone on this is also hypocritical. |

Fear of terrorists overhearing their conversation perhaps?
I've never been overseas, but I don't think I'd do it.
In all my visits to Canada, other than at the border, I don't recall anyone ever asking me where I was from.
I do find this trick useful and effective right here in the U.S. though, in the grocery store parking lot when somebody persists in hassling me to sign a petition in favor of something I'm against. Gets rid of them quick and without fail! :) |

I laugh at how some of these people are saying 'because other countries make fun of you' Yeah, believe me we got tons of stuff on those countries too. Far worse than any of you would ever be able to say. And I've never heard of Americans claiming to be canadian. |

Thumbs down all you want. It wont change the fact that your all hated in a global perspective.
Besides If you really cared what the rest of us thought, You'd change into a country you can be proud of that doesn't step on other countries so that your people can have whatever they want. |
