Life is as simple as you make it, geography has nothing to do with it. |

If you choose to. You will be surrounded by nature and fishing and outdoor activities so if that is the life for you, go for it. |

AK is rad!
The northern lights, midnight sun, ocean and mountains..
It is similar to anywhere in the Rockies, except the mountains are on steriods....
Plus the government gives you about $1,000 per year (per dependent) just because you live there. Not bad. |

Depends what you are running from. Sometimes we think that a totally new environment will improve our life, but in my experience, I find that after awhile the same issues surface that made you leave the last place.
You should try visiting there a few times before moving. |

I think being in Alaska is like getting a soul cleansing! It's very possible.
I knew a guy who went for a two week vacation from his job a s a construction worker, stayed, and is now a successful artist and gallery owner in Anchorage. |

It depends on the person. In Alaska, you will have to live through the harsh winters. That's all I can say... |

living in Alaska can be physically depressing. Half the year, days have no end. The other half is full of endless night. |

Define simpler. If you were wealthy and could move to the middle of nowhere Alaska with no running water or sewer, then your life would be simpler in some ways. It might be more complex in others. |

Don't know, never been there. I don't think it would appeal to everyone, but you can say that about every place. I guess you won't know unless you try. I think I would hate it. The long days, when the sun never truly sets and then you have the long nights where the sun never truly rises. Lots of mosquitoes too! Don't hear about that too much. Lots of isolation. BUT scenery to die for and all the nature a person could want.
Of course bikini season would be a bit short :)
But Alaska does pay there residence money each year, I believe due to the oil pipeline. I'm not sure how long you have to be a residence there to claim that though. |

Alaska ROCKS. I've lived here most of my life and I LOVE IT! But - it's definately not for everyone. Where in Alaska are you planning on living? It's a HUGE state, and climates can vary pretty drastically. What type of job would you be looking for? Do you want to live in a city, a village, or the bush? Can you handle long, cold, dark nights? Can you deal with isolation? Does the thought of -40 make you want to faint? Will you be okay being so far from family? You should consider all these things before contemplating a move. Of course, I know a ton of people who came up for vacation and decided to stay.
My favorite "why I moved to Alaska" story came from a girl I used to work with...her and her boyfriend were smoking pot and watching the Discovery Channel at their apt in Dallas...they loaded their van and left a week later and they LOVE it up here.

I'm not sure, but if you are considering it, consider this:
-Why do you want to move to Alaska? Is it problems that you are having?
-Who is going with you?
-Would you possibily want to go through the pain of the goodbyes and the love? |
