When I travel to another country I try to see things that are unique to that country as well as experience the culture(s).

Considering how large and diverse we are, it's hard to suggest any given place, but will give some suggestions.

First forget Florida, nothing unique there unless you want to experience the Cuban culture. Don't get me wrong Florida is O.K. but not a top 5 place. It's more tourist trap than anything else.

Any major city in Texas will offer that well known Cowboy experience. Big Texas steak, western music, Tex-Mex... San Antonio is my personal favorite, but Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, Austin will do just as well.

The Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon and Las Vegas make a nice trio. Close together, with a lot of beauty and fun.

New Orleans, its a one of a kind! While they took a lot of damage, they are now up and running again. Well worth the time and money just for the food and music.

For a bit of simple relaxation and a feel for how real people live, I would like to suggest my home state Arkansas. http://www.arkansas.com/

Depending on where you go for major attractions, look for an Indian Reservation. There are many scattered across the country. The old life style is dying out quickly, and this culture can only be found here.

Of course there is always New York. The city has a lot to offer, but everyone goes there and it's expensive.

As to best way to get around. Car was the best, but now that the gas prices have gone up so high, flying can be cheaper. Also if you plan to cover a large amount of area, in short time you will have to fly. Unlike other places in the world, our bus & train system lacks!!! DON'T USE THE BUS OR TRAIN for cross country traveling!!!

Once you land where you are going, you can always rent a car, for local traveling.

About flying, the U.S. uses a 'hub system'. To learn more details if you aren't familiar with this system, you might want to post a question under "airline travel".

How to get the most out of your stay? Relax, don't try to do everything in one trip... you can't do it! If you are on a budget, don't worry, there is lots to do most anywhere for little or no cost. While the U.S. is thought to be a rich country, in truth most of us are just plain old working folks, who also are always looking for a good deal.

Also if you do some planning now, you also could book at the different state and national parks. This is a great way to see our country, meet some of our friendliest people, and save some major money.

Well, How long will you be here?
Are you going to east/west coast or both?
Sorry to be asking you the questions...
east coast NEW YORK is a must... you should check into what you would like to see in the city.
There is a lot to see there in the city.
Florida is also on the east coat, along with the good old Jersey Shore.
WEST coast ...LA, Hollywood, Bev. Hills a must & I hear San Fran is great also.
I'm going to Vegas this year. Going coast to coast I fly. But check out the train (amtrack)for going up & down the east coast. If you want to see Disney, the one in Florida is more spread out than the Ca. one.
Have fun!

I think you need to be more specific as to where you are going, this is a big country.

Climb into your car, and point it in a direction and drive. travel until you tired or have found something that grabs your attention. The next day repeat. Planned vacation and trips are good for some people. Personally seeing the country with a open mind and meeting the people is very enriching.

1. MUST see Hawaii, Chicago, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco/Hollywood. You should see some of the countryside as well...Grand Canyon, etc. Sorry, I am a city girl.

2. Fly across the country - coast to coast. Book flights online then rent a car. The internet has the best deals.

3. Travel books, travel sites, talk to people. Know what you want to see & do. Research the locations because if you don't you will be overwhelm. Travel smart and most of all HAVE FUN. This is a great country to explore!!!!

IMOK
Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Monument Valley are al relatively close to each other and are amazing. The best way to get around is by driving.

kentata
1. Hawaii, Hollywood, Grand Canyon, New York City, San Francisco
2. From coast to coast - fly ... jetBlue and Southwest have good fares. Hawaiian Air to Hawaii. Once you are somewhere, rent a car.
3. Get a map, and a good tour book, decide what you want to see and allot time to see those things.

Since you didn't mention a time limit:
1. Tour the Maine coast; visit St. Augustine, Florida; Seattle, WA; South Dakota and Las Vegas, Nevada.
2. Car
3. Research the history of each place so that you can go to specific points of interest: The observatory in Portland, Maine; the Castillo de San Marcos; the Space Needle as the city lights appear; the Badlands and Wall Drug; the Freemont Street Experience.
